I agree with Dennis Towner: It's pathetic that people are so lonely they need to buy computerized artificial friends, instead of going out and making real artifical friends the old-fashioned way! On the other hand, a computerized artificial friend you can have sex with?Now, that's progress! Only, who needs to talk with the thing? The real artifical friends talking is what got us into this predicament!
And who wants yet another device that knows your entire life story and all your secrets and can betray you to the first decent hacker who comes along?

I agree with sad and pathetic. Have we become so gadget oriented that we have to invent things to talk to our elderly than just caring for them ourselves? When I am elderly and someone tries to pass one of these things to me, I will feed it back to them.

I do not consider this sad or pathetic. First, it provides motivation for advancing the technology, and second, if they make sufficient progress, these things might become good advisers, mentors which supply is limited and precious. I would interact and respond to an "I, Robot" or "AI" humaniform robot. I see a need for these. There are many pieces of technology which need to leap in order to make them viable and buy-able in the next 20 years. On top of it all, there is no system integrator which has stepped up to the plate to integrate all these disparate technologies.

I don't see why people are calling the people who would get something like this pathetic and sad. For one it's an assumption that this bunny would be their only companion, even the most reclusive people have friends (even if it's long distance or internet based). Plus, does everyone tell their friends/best friends Everything? I know I don't for sure, medical, financial, personal problems I tend to leave out of conversations (especially with some specific friends else everyone they know will know about my problems). If this bunny is going to be a companion then I see this as more of a novelty companion.

AS someone who is getting over a CVA (A stroke) I would love to have these robo-friends for a while. I do get human interaction at work, and I am back to work, but it gets lonely at home. The cats (thank God for my pair!) can't talk back and can't tell me (except in most basic ways)that I have done something incredibly stupid.

I for one would greatly appreciate this technology. Call me "pathetic" if you must, but I have difficulty socializing with people, recognizing their feelings and intentions, and just generally connecting with others. Because of this, I am usually alone, often wallow in self-loathing, and feel guilty when my own ineptitude ruins the few meaningful relationships I've managed to have. So a machine that could tailor its responses to MY personality, and learn what I want and need, would be a miraculous thing for someone like me. Such a technology might even be programmed to help folks like me learn how to be better with others, sort of like a customized social tutor. Unfortunately, I doubt very much the technology will get to that point in the next few decades, so it will probably just be more of the same - obvious chatbots and balky robo-toys.

There are many home bound seniors in this community that are only linked to the outside by their telephone. How wonderful to have a second choice, one that might remind you to take your meds, or help an alzheimers patient find their way home if they stray. Incorporated in a cane or "walker" it would be a great tool, possibly even notifying emergency services if need be.

I love this concept. I do see the "sad and pathetic" POV, but not all of us have good friends that work the same work schedules as us, or perhaps live in different time zones, so it's difficult to connect with them when you need to talk about something. However, I believe the main consumer for this product will be female. If I want to complain about something just to get it off my chest, and my husband does not want to hear about it -- Why not talk to the bunny?
