Edison directed his technicians, primarily Arthur Kennelly and Harold P. Brown,[12] to preside over several AC-driven executions of animals, primarily stray cats and dogs but also unwanted cattle and horses. Acting on these directives, they were to demonstrate to the press that alternating current was more dangerous than Edison's system of direct current.[13] Edison's series of animal executions peaked with the filmed electrocution of Topsy, a Coney Island circus elephant. He also tried to popularize the term for being electrocuted as being "Westinghoused".

The way to get Pharmaceuticals behind this nano technology is to show them that they have no choice or that their revenues will be sustained, if not increased, by getting in on developing this nano technology from its infancy.

Nano-wizard takes the prize

Allen,
Excellent article to introduce concepts with application and development with nanotechnology. As you and others are aware, the current educational system (K-12 grades) are foundational knowledge and skills development. Whereas, higher education allows individuals to gain knowledge and skills in the various disciplines and science fields.

Nanotechnology, includes aspects of both the technology application (engineering) and the natural sciences (chemistry and biology) fields. Some chemicals have been shown to contribute to cancer, such as benzine or is that benzene--yet are applicable to nanotechnology aspects.

Usually, those with a Ph. D or further are involved in the research aspects with nanotechnology, so it might seem the 'nanotechnology revolution' is always a few years away, as the technology is refined and the potential applications with nanotechnology become known and adopted into everyday products and services.

As your aware of the first mobile cell phones, huge clunkers by today standards cellular phone systems, were first used for military applications. Today, cell phones are integrated with our society and this adoption of cellular technology has occurred within the last 15 years when it became established with the production facilities of Motorola Cellular.

The issues with nanotechnology, some what analogous to the two faces of Janus, is the benefits that can occur within society. The other aspect might be the unintended consequences of non-biodegradable material being introduced into the ecosystem causing issues to occur.

I believe that the European Union has regulations upon the development of nanotechnology, or the UK, because nanotechnology within human tissue is simular to asbestos fibers and causes non-cancerous growth to occur within human tissue. While that is a negative aspects, the researchers and scientific community are developing safeguards.

Many companies are already developing aspects with nanotechnology and these companies are traded upon the Stock Exchanges around the world.

If there happens to be a future nanotechnology stock increase, followed by the analogous (Tech Stock) Bust of 2001--what will they call it? Pardon the following two puns, will it be nanobusted,or small-tatars of the business world?

Nano-wizard takes the prize

Allen McCready,
Thank you for your "rant." My experience as a pharmaceutical salesman is that you are totally correct.

Nano-wizard takes the prize

This reminds me of the teenager that is stuck in a chld's body it's like something in her system didn't get turned on I wonder if someone like Mirkin could find a way to fix it.

Nano-wizard takes the prize

This year we saw a breakout of H1N1 swine flu. The older US population seemed to be resistant due to previous exposure to this type of flu. Not this specific flu, so there seems to be a degree of generalization to the body’s immune response. Would it be possible to develop vaccines for a broad spectrum of infections that lack the side effects possible with bio-vaccines?

Nano-wizard takes the prize

Mr. Mirkin, aka Superstar. I realize that you're very very good. Soon you'll be working in picoseconds, while the rest of the world will be fixing my heart in the nanosecond environment. The possibilities are endless. It might be that you've already given mankind life ad infinitum. And when you really crash into what’s possible within the materials world, the spaceship will be able to survive as long as mankind. That will really be interesting. Do it soon, I want to enjoy the results of your work too. God bless you and your staff and keep up the good work.

Nano-wizard takes the prize

Awesome - he can help Obama out with our soon to
be nano-job market and nano-economy......

Nano-wizard takes the prize

What a wonderful huge article for such a small subject Alan! I sure as heck hope that lawyers never find out about nanolithography, man they'll wreck havoc with the fine print then.

Actually some really interesting things are being done with nanotechnology in it's infancy stage. I saw a documentary on how they're using nanotech to engineer viruses that attach to cancer cells and kills them by allowing medicine to be injected right into the bad cells. I'm sure that in 20 years they'll be doing some really useful stuff with nanotech. I'm sure medicine will be one of the fields that best utilizes it.

Nano-wizard takes the prize
What a wonderful program here. I am planning to enroll in the nanotechnolgy program at Univ of NC at Greensboro this coming Jan 2010. Wanting my masters and then PhD. Currently have masters in software engineering from NC A&T State Univ in Dec 2000.

here is a formula I came up with a couple weeks ago.

(x^(∞+1)+ 1)^(∞+1)=0 where x>0 this is my formula for unconditional love - what do you think? I know you have an idea.

E = mc^2  is wrong

E = m is correct and I can proof that this is correct.

Walter Harris
harriswo@hotmail.com
harrisw@uncsa.edu

Nano-wizard takes the prize

How I envy you all. I am 82 years old and would love to have had a 'shot" at being involved in this miraculous arena.

Nano-wizard takes the prize

I.
