Really, 100 billion over how many years? (I don't know, but its more than a few). Didn't we just drop like 600 billion to bail out people who collectively have more than that in their bank accounts? 100 billion over these past 10 or 12 years is only like 10 billion a year. We are throwing way more than that at a disturbance in the market. Heck if you wanna look at it in a Darwinian sense, it was the market selecting against unwieldy and deceitful corporate giants. Give that 600 billion to private corporations trying to develop cheep access to space (oh wait our government and powerful lobbies don't want that) ahem.. Lockheed-Martin.THE DEVELOPMENT OF INDUSTRY IN ORBIT IS THE NEXT BIG INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION. Why be short sighted get in on it now. The ISS is crucial to demonstrating the feasibility of these industries, and encouraging private investment in these sectors.
Seems to me 100 billion is a drop in a leaky bucket.

Billion-dollar pictures

Great pictures and a nice roundup Alan!

Is the Space Station worth it? Definitely. It's a great achievement by mankind, borne from scientific/technological innovation and international co-operation. It is our first human outpost beyond Earth and with time, maybe a stepping stone to other worlds. It's scientific and symbolic value cannot be overstressed.

$100bn over 15 years sounds okay to me. Naysayers will advise that $100bn can be better spent elsewhere (health, poverty eradication etc.). But we're already doing that and if we wait for everyone, we'll never get there. Imagine waiting for flight or the internet to be discovered until everyone is fed!

Billion-dollar pictures

One hundred billion dollars for the space station. The US space program appears to be more geared torward the military than improving our own lives. The space program shuld be geared torward providing marketable worldwide commercial items or "gizmos" that no other country can provide to boost our own economy. The USA shoudld be reaping huge economic benefits from the space program since just about every other country in the world doesn't have the know how or the wealth to initiate such a program. This space program needs to start yielding visible results that will boost our own economy and keep our own country well ahead of all others into the distant future.

Billion-dollar pictures

I think this image of the ISS will ultimately prove to be the defining photo of the station program, and possibly one of the iconic photos from our manned space program this decade.

Billion-dollar pictures

What a huge waste of money.

Billion-dollar pictures

Your headline is wrong and misleading - apparently just to get attention - the picture does not cost $100 billion - that's the space station cost.

Pls correct.

[ALAN ADDS: The headline plays off the nickname that ground controllers jokingly gave to the picture - "the $100 billion photograph." This is the kind of picture that was put out as an artist's conception 12 years ago or so, when NASA was trying to get across the idea of what this "new star in the sky" would look like. And it turned out looking pretty much as promised, I should say. So it's not the photo itself that took billions of dollars to produce, of course. It's the concept and the reality behind it. And I tried to go with a somewhat poetic headline (OK, maybe not all that poetic) that reflects that idea. When you read a line saying, for instance, "All the world's a stage" ... you wouldn't complain that all the world is not really contained behind a proscenium, would you? So I hope you'll indulge me on the headline as well. ;-) ]

Billion-dollar pictures

Yes, research is essential and recent political jeers at legitimate research are stupid --- though there are good reasons to question some expenditures and priorities. Hawking

What the ISS does to help this goal is limited, but it can help us learn to live in weightless for a prolonged period of time. It can also teach us to live with each other in confined quarters for a prolonged period of time, which it already has done actually. We could use the ISS to test hardware that we plan on sending to the Moon and Mars as well. It’s also helping us learn to work with each other from different countries, as well as many things I don’t have room here to describe. But what it can’t do to help this goal is numerous as well, we will never use it as a stopping point before we head off to the Moon or Mars for example.
What the main benefit of the Space Station is maybe time will only tell.

Therefore as limited as it may be the Station IS a stepping stone for the human race to actually become a multi-planet society, if that is what we decide to do. If we do decide to do that then yea, the ISS is worth it, even in its limited role.

I just wish we would admit that is what we need to do, there really is no other need or use of space. Here on this planet we are limited, in space we are not.

Billion-dollar pictures

Tony Stephen. A price has to be paid for outter space research, and future development. People on earth need to realize that there are a lot of planets out there. Earth is only one of millions of them. Human kind need to unit and stay in peace. Look at the wars that are going on, what can the UN do? The wars can cost more money than the space center. I am not against the money that was paid for the space center, because it is for good. A way to change peoples' future. We always hope for good changes, not bad ones. Without money, nothing can be done much these days. Because Money control everything that's how things are function. So one way or the other, the space center is a done deal for human kind. It is a good thing that we all know about it. Not like aliens, it is still a myth question. 100 billions seem a lot, but look at the economy, it lost trillions of dollars. It is just a matter of numbers or figures. Don't just think about that, that will make you go crazy. Health, Love, and peace, that is that power. If human kind meaning everyone live on Earth united and donate one dollar a month to help research, education, medical research, improving enviroment, shouldn't things be easier. That will be 100 billion dollars every year to help our Earth? Think about that. One human is just too mall, but when all Unit, that is power behond imagination! I can only speak out, but what Can I do? It is a world, not just me. All I can say is, God will lead you if you believe him. Take care everyone! Love one another and peace.

Billion-dollar pictures

Yes most of the cost goes to salerys spend on development . this pays taxes and gives poeple buying power it is all good for the economy

Billion-dollar pictures

Alan, On the whole I'd rather be seeing Space Station V spinning on orbit...but even I have to admit that the ISS shot is terrific.

Billion-dollar pictures

It is amazing how many self centered ignorant people are around, that just want to make negative comments without doing any research how the money is spent, and what knowledge we are gaining from ISS.

Billion-dollar pictures

<<NO, we have starving and homeless people that should be OUR first priority. >>

<<You know this makes me just plain mad. I am out of work with no insurance fighting for my disability. I have transverse mylitis which is an inflammation of the spinal cord that causes paralysis. I am paralyzed from the waist down. Even if I get my disability I will have no health benefits for 2 years. I believe I am more important than that damm picture. Money could have gone to research or into health care or to the tax payyers out of work. Are the leaders of this country ever going to wake up or is America going to just going to continue to go down the drain because of sheer stupidity? >>

I see comments like this and I am amazed.

1. We CANNOT just give money to homeless people (I never do) Giving them money, just handing it out, gives them no reason to go out and work for a home. I know this is only a generalization, but it is accurate, we can't just hand out money, that would be far more of a waste than any effort we make in space.
This is also why you see the signs at parks and such "Do not feed the animals" if you feed the wild animals they will not learn how to get the food for themselves, same thing with humans.

2. The space program CREATES JOBS, handing out money does not, now you tell me, which is the bigger waste, giving away money or creating jobs ??

3. The Space Station does do research into health care.

Billion-dollar pictures

100 Billion Dollars...for a space station that 99.99% of us will never see up close. If it is doing anything of importance it should be shown to the world rather than just have reports of problems and problems being repaired. Man kind needs to dream and explore but the space station doesn't inspire dreams and it doesn't explore, it just uses up resources without giving anything back to justify the expense.
It isn't needed to forward a trip to Mars or beyond anymore than a parking lot is needed as a place to design cars. It doesn't send us new views of what is going on in the universe, that is being done by telescopes. It hasn't given anyone one usefull thing that can be used here on earth. If the resources wasted on it had been used for a real preperation for a mission to mars we would probably be heading to mars in the next five years and would perhaps develop new techknowledgy that would help us conserve energy here, treat waste, conserve resuorces that are in short supply that are needed for the production of food for the world and last, but not least, technology for taking CO2 out of the air we breath (take that global warming!).

The space station is a total waste of time and money that should be abandoned and sent into a burnout orbit so that it is destroyed before ever hitting anything on the surface of earth. Lets face it, the space station is a overpriced piece of space junk that is doing little if anything that is productive, no new knowledge or technologies or techniques for doing things just a cosmic sponge soaking up money. Deep six it and find something we can do in space that will inspire mankind and improve his lot.

Billion-dollar pictures

Rakesh Sharma,
its not the first.
Skylab, Mir... nice thought though.

Billion-dollar pictures

Wahh Wahhh wahh, you all are just a bunch of crying babies that the government spent all this money on a space program that IS R&D for just about everything we use today. The poor are poor, if they really want to get a job they can take a shower and find work. I was poor once, I lived in a cheap motel for a few hundred a week and I still was able to find a job at McDonalds. The poor in Africa, I swear people just don't get it. Already we have thrown billions toward helping them out, but what happens? Another warlord with guns and troops, another civil war, so on and so forth. There are people that just wont allow stability, they wont allow the poverty filled villages to have education, they want their power and will do anything and everything to keep it. Its a lost cause.

Our miserable little rock is dying, we killed it. Our race is on the verge of self destruction at the same time of self rejuvenation amongst the stars. Mans destiny has always been to expand beyond the foreseeable horizon, space is that horizon and we will expand.

People complaining about all the spending of money on the ISS being a waste need to take a look at your home. How much crap do you have that you don't need? I have a computer, I have to for work just as my cell phone. But otherwise I have no TV because its a waste, I dont have high end appliances because they are a waste. I have what I need to survive and I pull everything into savings so that when it comes time for me to buy a home, I know I will be able to afford what I am buying instead of getting a mortgage for a house I can only pay part of.

Welfare and healthcare are not nObama's responsiblity, as someone smartly stated earlier it is actually against our Constitution for the government to give handouts like that and control all that. We are individuals under protection of the government, we control them because we vote. Now if everyone hates their policies so much, why are you on here when you should be writing letters to your state representative and legislature? Why are you not calling your politicans who you elected *if you didn't vote then you elected the guy in office* and tell him what YOU want, remember they work for us. The Fed'y government is supposed to defend the Constitution, not make new rules saying they are going to take care of everyone, cradle them in their arms and breast feed the weak. I'm sorry but you all need to wake up, read our Constitution again and get off that couch and see what the world is becoming.

Billion-dollar pictures

It gives me a tingly feeling when I see photos like this. A billion here and there to inspire me and give me tingly feelings... it's worth the price.

A government that turns on the printing press to generate hundreds of billions out of thin air, wake me up when hyperinflation has come and gone.
