[ALAN ADDS: Stars are magnetically powerful dynamos, as are black holes. When material falls into the black hole, it is drawn in among the magnetic lines of force ... whipping up particles to speeds approaching the speed of light. The magnetic lines channel all that energy outward. It would be pretty hard to duplicate that kind of dynamo artificially inside a satellite ... but if you could, it might be possible to channel the energy just as a black hole does. That might make something like a death ray possible. The expanse of space is unlimited and no one truly knows it's boundaries! Arbitrary is right!!! North verses South? How arbitrary!!! Relevance to the mass is: spacial conceptions of time- continuum's trying to be defined by way of actions from reactions and this is only a disciplined reaction to the actions we all think we can explain!
It is defined as a black whole yet, none have been on the other side to prove it is a whole!!! If we use some theory about space warping than, why could it not just be a warp of deep immensity that it has spacial perception of it being a whole? One says that light does not escape from it's grasp but then again whom has watched it from it birth and who will watch it from now on? If the budget is so big and great to do something like this than, does not anybody think there are much, much better things to do with this money to help save this earth from the injected or hypothesis that this world will indeed come to an end eventually? I know that the human being is just as if not more spectacular than this sight we are shown here in the photos we are humored to see!!! The human race alone is the truer miracle that needs the help and studies for help and healing!!! Why looking into outer space is really like looking into a sea of people and pointing out to me exactly which person is the true middle man or woman!!! And, I mean in bloodline, not just a person standing there!!! Also meaning everyone that ever was and or will be, so how can this all be so? Can this ever be done by any of us? You spoke of avoiding a higher power or deity or believer vs. skeptic yet is is an integral part of what makes up science in the first place!!! Without these hypotheses in effect than, no one would have need to dive into the unknown for it would already be known!!! The forces in which drive all we know, do and see are but definitions of labels we can attach to them for our understanding of a nature we will with no doubt never be able to harness anyway!!! There is but only one concept of my layman's way of thinking that bothers me and is always on my mind no matter what day it may have been or is or will be and, that is, THERMAL!!! We use the term; warm or warming as an understood variable but, what do you know? Why can it not just be that if there is any presence of heat of any kind than it is considered hot and if not present than considered cold!!! I tell you why, because of labels, that's why!!! Or because we know something can be measured we've gone measure happy! Here, let measure how happy or sad that person is!!! How rich or poor that person is or, how sick or healthy that person is! Yet we are so caught up in this gluttony of measure we tend to forget to measure the more important values that have total value to all and not just the one over the other!!!

See a black hole's blast

We know that black holes actually store all the sound molecules that escape to space...

In response to Daniel of Toronto's question about gravity waves escaping black holes, I might have an answer (though I'm a biologist and not a physicist). Gravity is currently described as a curvature in space/time, rather than as a wave or particle like light is. The very fact that nothing is capable of escaping a black hole is due to such extreme curving of space time around it, that once you pass the event horizon (the "black" part of a black hole), you would have to be traveling at a velocity that exceeds the speed of light in order to travel any distance away from the black hole, and since massive objects travelling at superluminal speeds are deemed physically impossible, escaping a black hole is therefore impossible. In other words, the only possible direction of movement within a black hole's event horizon is, in fact, towards the black hole's singularity.

Another way to think about this is that a black hole (or really any gravity) doesn't "pull" on you, per se. It actually alters space/time in such a way that your current position is closer to the center of gravity with each passing moment. So there are not (according to this theory) any gravitational "tractor beams" or waves that are actually emitting from the black hole or grabbing on to you and pulling you. I think that there is a hypothesis out there about the existence of "gravitons" which would treat gravity as a wave or particle, but these would quantum particles without mass, and so the whole "can't go faster than light" thing would not necessarily apply to them. At least that is my understanding of that hypothesis, anyway.

See a black hole's blast

this Godly amazing

See a black hole's blast

Another thing to point out here is that gamma ray bursts like this are not actually originating from within the black hole, but from outside it (as Alan mentioned in a comment he made).

When a black hole is "eating" the matter around it experiences some incredibly turbulent forces as it is accelerated very quickly to near-light speeds and collides with other matter doing the same thing. That is why you see so much light in the center. We cannot see the black hole itself here (by that I mean we cannot see the black hole's black event horizon) because it is underneath all the conflagration of exploding and colliding matter getting sucked into the black hole. The enourmous jets of gamma rays, x-rays, and charged particles we see in these pictures are the result of charged matter and photons that are so highly energized by the the swirling and accelerating that they actually break free from the gravity of the black hole (close to but NOT INSIDE the event horizon), and form a powerful jet away from the black hole from the only place where they will not collide with other matter in the process, which is the center, perpendicular to the spiral (think of the winds of a hurricane being weakest at its eye). The gamma rays from these jets (assuming they are pointed at us) can actually be felt millions of light years away, and are the furthest detectable events in the universe currently.

See a black hole's blast

As a hardcore surfer I'd like to say these microwaves could be a pretty groovy ride..what do you think Alan Boyle? Science will one day prove God beyond the shadow of any doubt...
The universe was created with laws and balance, and systems, and I believe that humans are "designed" to be curious and intelligent, and just "smart enough" to keep taking baby steps outwards in our thinking. After all, if we could actually fathom the universe, and Gods plan, we simply may not survive it. I think the vast distances in the universe are a buffer for all life...a purposeful limit to our ability to gather information. Time = Wisdom.
