As others have stated, BILLIONS were spent on Iraq, Afghanistan was bombed, Hurricane Katrina was a MESS, Billions are being thrown around wastefully. That's plain SAD, African children are reduced to drinking their own urine to live, and these inconsiderate obnoxious people are launching each other into space for a couple million dollars, when indeed, many countries can decrease their percentage of starvation with that cash.

Last time I checked, it's ok to say I Have A Dream. Not to make light of suffering in Africa, but please remember all of the hype of aid to Africa back in the 80's and the countless millions that have been raised. If you remember that, then you should also remember the heaping piles of grain, rice and corn earmarked for the hungry that was left rotting on docks in these destitute areas because THEIR OWN GOV'T WOULD NOT ALLOW SHIPMENT. Most of these problems are created by corrupt leaders that use hunger as a weapon to establish control of the masses. If sending billions alone could solve the problem, then lets get with it and do our part. Sadly, that has been already been tried to no avail. Money alone will not solve the issue. BTW, Branson donates a boatload of money to charitable institutions all the time, so lay off.

Stephen Hawking in space

Branson. It takes a spirit that only comes from reaching for the stars (physically and metophorically). Please open your minds and your hearts to the spirit of humanity that has given us even a glimmer of hope to achieve great dreams. Without that spirit, you would not have the awareness of the problem, let alone the ability to voice so openly your opinion.

To Stephen Hawking and Richard Branson: To not do everything in your power to reach for the stars will doom us all again to the dark ages of ingnorance. To quote Stephen:

"The long-term survival of the human race is at risk as long as it is confined to a single planet," he said. "Sooner or later, disasters such as an asteroid collision or nuclear war could wipe us all out. But immediately some [readers] attack blindly as if Hawking was committing a crime of injustice to the planet! Mabe all of us should do more introspection and see what Hawking (Branson too) is really up to - he is attempting to bypass taboos long held by NASA - a ride into space from whom he would never receive. Mr. Branson has donated much money to other causes. Millions upon millions of dollars are donated to further medical research and to help the less fortunate around the world. So I don't see why some people are so critical of Mr. Branson's decision to help someone who has contributed so much to science and the advancement of the human race realize a dream.

And to all those who criticize how large sums of money will be spent to send a single man to space, how about you stop being so hypocritical? I bet many of you have purchased the latest overpriced video game console and have probably never volunteered your time or donated a penny in your lives. Keep in mind that many of these needy people are in the situation they are in because they don't take the initiative to help themselves. For the disabled or sick, the money donated to researching for cures is amazing. Maybe you should get pist off at yourselves. Most of the wealthy on this planet donate their time and money for good causes. Mr. Branson just wants to give a great person a great opportunity to live his dream. I might even bet that Mr. Branson has helped the needy and less fortunate much more then anyone who has responded to this story.

Stephen Hawking in space

I am all for it. But he's earned it. His continued existance with a disease that has driven many to suicide hasn't limited his ability to inspire and push the frontiers of knowledge. He has earned a chance to go. Yes it does cost a lot. But apologies to Imran, Lawrence, NJ, USA aside it isn't billions for this one individual. The company Branson has created is a for profit business. The customers support the enterprize. As with anything new, there is that element of danger for everyone. From space we will be able to see directly the consequences of our actions. We as a country cannot allow space to be the playground for governments only. If the people of our planet can be shown that their dreams aren't totally dead, that there is a future of wonder and possibility for the human race just waiting for those who try then perhaps the dismal reality we presently face can be overcome. I know the possibility of me personally going into space is small at this point in my life but I fully support and would donate so that someone I respect and admire could actually go. This isn't about one man, it's about pushing forward in the face of the increasingly adverse world we live in. And there's Branson. Another over the top egotistic, brash , pushy billionare. But if you take a look at the man, you'll see that no matter how outrageous or flashy his operations he does get the job done and he's smart enough to cut loose losing propositions. He'll make it work one way or the other. We need people like Hawking to inspire and Branson to make it happen. I say: GO FOR IT AND GO FOR IT BIG!!!! This is a win-win situation. You know they'll be carrying instruments and renting space to NASA in no time. Think of the financial windfall we receive by eliminating the pork barrel corporate infighting mentality of the aerospace industry. When they show them how cheaply it can be done then we'll see such an about face in their hard attitudes about who should get the government money when they finally have some competition. Want to put a satellite in orbit cheaply? Call Branson, or Space x or Armidillo Areospace (a favorite of mine) or any of a dozen or more companies who share the same dream of opening up space to if not the average Joe or Jane, then to those who have a different idea of how to push the human race forward. Do we feed a village for a few years only to have the money run out returning them to the grinding existance they were faced with before or find new ways to view the earth and how to better use her resources to rebuild and repair the damage we have caused to her and her children? We are steadily running out of resources here and if we can produce methods that allow us to exploit the vast resources of space in an environment that our pollution will not affect in any significant way for centuries then we can stop raping the thin crust and fragile environment. That child in the small village who looks up at the stars one clear night and sees one move will know that on that star are people who are trying to save her and her peoples world from destruction. Only if we start now will we get to the point where we can change the world for the better. The money is going to be spent anyway. If Hawking going brings any attention to the heights that the human race can rise then DO IT! It's the difference between saying the arctic ice shelves are breaking off and having a live person feel the anguish of watching the world disintegrate in real time and communicating it in a way that touches your soul. No robot or satellite can ever make that connection. Only a person. And if that person is disabled then people will realise that this is important for everyone. Not just the folks with "The Right Stuff". Go go go Stephen. And Go go go Richard Branson and Yeager and Rutan and Carmack. These are some of the people who are putting their money where their mouths are. For us. For Everyone.

I still don't understand it but, God, thanks to you I've sure enjoyed trying to. I've had a good long life, it's been exceptional...worked as an artist all my life...been an aerobatic pilot...a little athletic...been healthy... yet when I think of you and all you've accomplished, Stephan, there's a feeling of almost shame that I've had so much joy and you may have had so little. Then, trying to understand your work and imagining what you must have struggled thru to conceive and conquer such monumental intellectual challenges, I realized that there had to have been moments when you've undoubtedly known a joy that surpasses any emotions that most humans are capable of imagining. So now you may get to fly like few have ever flown and I envy you. No one deserves it more than you do and we pray that you enjoy it more than anyone before. Hope you have a good trip and write.

Stephen Hawking in space

Is it possible to accomplish ZPE? Zero Point Energy?

The man has helped to introduce the modern thinking of core physics to the scientific mentality of man. His life has and is devoted to modernize thoughts to further explore, expand and attempt to explain the collective thoughts that other shoes could not fill due to the centuries they lived in. What I call the singularity of generational intelligence.

For all that Mr. Hawking has done for our time, achieving his dream is nothing but owed and deserving. All that he has done for the scientific community alone deserves a flight to Space, and then some.

For those who feel the compassion to discourage such great events, shame on you. Stephen Hawking would have to be the most deserving of us all to be given the oportunity to touch the edge of the cosmos. His book 'A brief History...' has inspired so many to understand our place in the universe that I think the very least he deserves is to be able to look out there without the fog of our atmosphere clouding his eyes.
As for the starving millions that need our help I reckon that if the money spent on that endeavor was spent as wisely as any money spent on sending Stephen aloft much much more would be achieved, and many more lives saved.

Stephen Hawking in space

yaknow whats more of a waste of money then going into space? millions spent on television advertizements for newer more expensive things that no one actually needs. billions spent on maintaining a nuclear arsenal that can lay waste to the planet 50 times over. really, isnt the ablity to destroy the planet 3 or 4 times enough?

It is improper to criticize Branson for potentially using this event as a publicity stunt. I suspect that Hawking himself is not only aware of the benefit that this event would have for Branson but is also counting on it. We need people like Stephen Hawking and Richard Branson to accomplish what the rest of us can only dream about. It is not for us to leash the gifted among us because we wish to have them do something else for us, rather we need to challenge the gifted among us to dream and achieve. One day space travel will be available for the masses, but first there must be those willing to take these small steps toward reaching that objective. As far as the starving children of the world, it is not for the lack of food, there is plenty; it is not for the lack of money, it is available; rather, it is the politicians of the world who are the obstacles to eliminating world hunger. It is the people of greed who care nothing for others that stand in the way of food reaching those who are hungry that allow entire populations to starve to death. Genetic engineering holds the key to growing crops in less-than-ideal environments so that the people of third world countries can be self sufficient, but there are those who oppose genetically modified foods because "it isn't natural". Stem cell research holds the promise of correcting a host of diseases, but this research is stimatized because it violates the moral opinion of a few outspoken people. I favor Dr. Hawking's dream to journey to the edge of our world. We have always been a species that wonders and ventures toward the unknown. It is not a matter of whether death or injury is possible, it is a matter taking life to its fullest potential. Let us not cease this quest but rather embrace it.

Stephen Hawking in space

Don't elevate him or make him out to be anything but
a man. If he's to go into space then so be it. His
writings aren't to make him special. Simply to try and
communicate to the rest of us some of the wonder all
around us. We could and can understand if we take the
time to. I'm a physicist and owe my thanks to men like
him and Dr. Einstein and so many others who's names
have been lost to the sands of time. But it is up to
us as individuals to take the knowledge available and
try to make sense of it and grow and possibly work to
contribute to the vast pool of knowledge. He deserves
to go as a reward for his efforts on our behalf. But
he is still only a human being and like the rest of
the world he's dealing with the hand he's been dealt.

His is only a first step if he gets it to show us that
there is far more to our world than constant war and
strife and suffering. If he goes it won't be to do
research, but to simply go. To those who don't want
to see him get a chance, well, it's sour grapes that
they didn't have the opportunity themselves. If you
do as much to advance society and knowledge of our
place and destiny then you too should have the chance
to go yourselves. How much time do you think he has
left? He has already passed the limits thought to be
possible for an ALS sufferer. And in the process he
has continued to contribute to the world a view of
a vast and wonderful universe. But he is only standing
(wheeling) on the shoulders of those who have gone
before him. And he is passing on to us the shoulders
to stand on so that we can see further still. Give him
a break. I only hope that a star or even a starship
will be named for him so that after he's gone on to
that great journey people won't take it for granted
that we were always going to get there anyway. He and
many many others have dedicated their lives to show
us that the world doesn't stop at the end of our
perceptions and fingertips. And if Branson wants to
foot the bill then shut the hell up. If he were to
make the same offer to you would you agonize over the
implications to the world or would you just go for the
sake of going?

And who knows. Maybe any alien cultures out there that
might be watching are simply waiting to meet someone
who in their eyes has passed kindergarten and is in
a position to learn the real secrets of our ever
smaller universe. That would be cool. But if he is
prevented from going simply because someone thinks
that the money should go elsewhere and not because
of his health then shame on you. How can we dream of
going where no one has gone before if we reserve that
gift only for the dull conservative (no offense) types
that are cranked out of our Navy and Air Force schools
to fight, fly and die (willingly) to protect us from
each other and not having much time for an imagination
or an alternative view. He's just the kind of person
we need to send up there. Someone with open eyes who
isn't beholden to a secrecy agreement or a government
or something of that nature that prevents him from
coming back and really letting us know if it's worth
all of the effort. If someone should get the chance to
go it should be someone like him. And what he can tell
us when he returns. And he will return. He's too much
of a stubborn bastard to let anyone put limits on him
that he didn't put there himself. Good luck Stephen.
I wish it was me. but then again I haven't earned it
yet. You have. And Mr. Branson, do everything you can
to make it so. The benefits far outweigh the negatives
that could happen. Even if it kills him. You should
make plans to space him if the worst happens. I think
the idea of Stephen Hawking floating in orbit for as
long as it can last would be a fitting tribute to a
life spent trying to understand our complex universe.

I'm pretty sure he is thinking about it all the time. If I were him I would
die happy after that. We take for granted our freedom
of movement in our world. Can we deny him a little
taste of that freedom? Especially since it won't be
costing us one thin dime for him to do it. Someone
will be going no matter what anyone does to try to
stop it. Let it be him. Who knows what insights he
will have? Personally I don't give a damn what he
brings back to us. I and many many other people would
give up a lot more including our lives just for a
chance to do so. He deserves a shot. And not for a
moment would I turn down the opportunity. This would
cement his place in history as much as his book
"A brief history of time" cemented his place in the
minds of we dreamers who are looking beyond this poor
planet to a future of mankind in space. If we could
expand into our own solar system the earth might just
have time to heal from the disease we have become.

And maybe we'll survive to look back on the time when
a man confined to his body and wheelchair was able to touch the stars. And take us along for the ride.

What he saw was the other side of the mountain; and another mountain to cross.

As a young man I went to places that I had never seen, just for the novelty of going. Like the bear, it was the going that was irresistible; I felt I simply had to. And like the bear, I found new, unsuspected places to go and found new knowledge and understanding. Most importantly, I found that there existed unimagined connections between what I had known before going and what I found in new, magical places.

I think it was James Van Allen who wrote of the way that humans have expanded their horizons through history. First he climbed a tree to get a better view, then he walked to the top of a hill to see even more. Then he climbed a mountain to peer at unknown horizons. There came a day he filled a bag with hot air and rose to great heights, then he made an airplane. Now he has made a rocket so that he can rise high enough to see this whole planet in a single field of view. The whole thing!

Well, you can see where this is leading . . .

The point is this: in all this climbing to higher vantages we have been true to our nature. We have seen in our minds that to climb higher would allow us to see further, to see more. And as our efforts succeeded, our knowledge and understanding have indeed increased. This is a quite precise definition of science. It is what we have always done. You and I, all of us do it constantly, every day. Science is what people are most suited to do!

The greatest tragedy that could possibly happen to the human race would be to stop. I do not think that ceasing to explore is remotely possible. As long as there are children who ask, "What are the little lights in the sky," and as long as there are parents who know how to answer, there will always be new discoveries and new goals. Not just for the bear who went over the mountain, but for all the people who hear the news when he returns.

By all means, Mr. Hawking, go. By all that we hope for, Mr. Branson, help him go. We will all be waiting, eager for any news. We will want to follow in your path. Such small steps are part of the greatest journey; one that began at the top of a tree, peering out over the mists. It is a journey that has no end. Each step is honorable and filled with limitless promise.

It's what we do. We go. We look. We find a way to bring others with us even to celestial shores. It's what we do . . .

Stephen Hawking in space

Richard Branson
If one person was to tie him/herself arm to arm, waist to waist, leg to leg with the great physicist, why wouldn't they achieve sucess in space flight?
I will in a heart beat! And if you are for it or against it,
nothing you do or say matters. what matters is that
someone is trying to expand our horizons. For better
or worse it's what makes us human. There will be poor
always. There will be suffering. And from time to time
there is HOPE! You could pour all of Branson's money
into all of those problems and all you'd have left is
one ex-billionare and be nowhere near solving the vast
problems you'd hoped to address. We will only solve
the mess we've made out of this world by trying to be
smarter and more inventive in our search for solutions.

You can't turn your back on the fact that the only
way out of the dark future we face is to prove that
we still can dream and innovate and discover. I try
my best to help people on a personal level. Secret
food drops. Mystery money in the mail box. Things that
help just one or just a few people make it through. I
don't even try to solve the worlds problems. I just
try to give a person hope and that kind of investment
pays huge dividends. That person you've helped may go
on to be the next Hawking or at least become a kind
of person that sometime in the future will pass that
favor on to the next person. Branson, by offering to
send Hawking into space knows that he is getting a
hell of a lot more for his money than giving the same
money to an organization that will eat it up with
administration costs. His investment in Hawking's
trip will pay HUGE dividends through inspiration and
hope in a future that most people have become jaded
about ever seeing. Others will see hope for the
disabled. Others will be inspired to go for their own
dreams. And if only for one moment we will be able to
forget the sorry shape we have left this world in.

And through example maybe each of us can just a little
bit for someone else. Help them realise their dreams.
Or at help them survive to join the fight for a better
world for all of us. I can dream, can't I?

Stephen Hawking in space

If Richard Branson wants to send Prof. Hawking into space and Hawking agrees, then I see no problem.

It's not as if by taking the money that is spent on these flights and dumping it on Africa or whereever the situation would improve. The poverty in these areas is not the root of the problem, only the symptom of larger issues relating to regional security, social infrastructure, resource management and economic development. These problems cannot be solved by having money thrown at them. Additionally, there is every potential that developments related to spaceflight could have branches that wind up being of use in solving these problems. The universe is hostile, devour to survive, so it is and so it's always been. There will always be children dying of something, always be some other issue "more deserving" of the resources being spent on some other endeavour, it's a cycle you can't escape from.

Stephen Hawking in space

Will that awesome voice box he has work in outerspace. He says he believes life on earth is at ever-increasing risk and that permanent escape of some people from the planet is imperative. Re-read Stephens own comments. They are both "far out there" and rational at the same time.

It is hard to imagine the condition of the planet being more hostile to life than space, but we know that is has been before.

"By the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of the water and in the water: Whereby the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished."

According to the Word of God, man may well escape the planet, but the coming judgment will destroy both the heavens and the earth.

"The heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men."

Amen, Amen, "The day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up."

Yes, man may well escape Earth, but, "How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard him?"

The Word of God tells us that he “has appointed a day in the which he will judge the world in righteousness.” What about you? Are you ready for that day? Whether you are ready or not, you can be assured that, “it is appointed unto men once to die, and after this the judgment.”

See: Publicly Preaching the Judgment of Christ in video
https://www.maulis.com/video_gallery.html

Stephen Hawking in space

What's wrong with us? Let us look into what we are. Whether it is evolution or divine force - the end result is the same no matter what each of us thinks; we are creatures that have needs to satisfy and we WILL do some of those no matter! - irregardless of who thinks what is appropriate! See, I just used the word "irregardless" - you caught it, didn't you? As soon as it was noticed a number of options came up and YOU acted on one of them. Were you hungry, happy, bored - is irrelevant! You each responded the manner you could.

The same goes with Stephen. His first thought about the possibility *of experiencing weightlessness* and your reaction to it is SUBJECTIVE - there is really no objective thinking here.

Why? How far would you go to satisfy the hungry? "give the shirt off your back" or until you yourself can't think anymore? Or what? Better yet! - How far would you go to defend your loved one? It becomes an individual decision, guided by your present state and by all your experience in life.

So, let us be what we would like to be *of course with some discretion* - that's what we want isn't it?

Say what you want - it WILL make you feel good. Alternatively, try to take steps and see how far you can get with YOUR righteousness. Think of the moment you would do when you are informed that as you took your very first step you have killed a bacteria or ----- a spider or ----- or a human being. Would that knowledge make any difference?

Let Stephen go and feed the hungry as you determine it is appropriate. As I know you, one time in your life or another it was/is/or will be - more appropriate!

Stephen Hawking in space

Go Stephen, we have all supported your dream and now it has come true.

Congratulations

Stephen Hawking in space

Mr.HAWKING i respect your work i feel that you belong to the stars i wish you all the best on you well deserved flight

Stephen Hawking in space

Dear Mr. Hawking,
I am 6 Years Old. Very aptly said. I admire Mr. Hawking as I see him as God's perfect creature,- despite his infirmity, he didn't let it hinder what his great mind can achieve. It gave him the drive to go on living and to think that the subject in which he is putting his whole life to is so far beyond us.
