Fossil fuels are finite and polluting, people are already overpopulating the planet, and it seems that reaching for something better (tech spinoffs from confirmation of what were only theories) may be worth gambling with our miserable present existence - provided the odds are mostly in our favor (-: Heck, an asteroid could come along and wipe us out too, but significantly advanced technologies could save us.

A new captain boldly goes

Jen F. People have wrongly associated the term with an object of a similar name that exists in the depths of space/time. There's an odd assumption that a continuously growing, microscopic vacuum, which sucks everything into it, would somehow be created and suck up the entire Earth. Fortunately this isn't how a "real" black hole functions or we, along with the entire universe, would reside inside one right now.

It's very important to understand the energy created by smashing these particles together is really, really, really small. The total energy is equivalent to what is constantly happening on earth, everyday. The total mass involved is less than what the naked eye could see.

A "black hole", which is a terrible name for the object it describes, is entirely different. Stellar black holes are born of a gigantic star which is unable to withstand its own gravity. This is an extremely different process which will create something entirely different. What is the probability of an ant colony manufacturing peanut butter? Factual evidence does not support these doomsday scenarios. There were the same "concerns" with RHIC. I say "concerns" and ask again about the ant colony and peanut butter. Are you concerned that your sleeping blanket will have human babies? How about your daily vitamin making you chocoalte ice cream? If your concerned about colliding particles making black holes that swallow Earth then get your bedding some birth control. NOW!

http://public.web.cern.ch/public/en/lhc/Safety-en.html

A new captain boldly goes

To Dan Asti: Thank you!!! As to whether or not any of the existing "major" religions have portrayed God correctly remains to be seen. It might be that it is just plain vanity on the part of us humans to refuse to believe that when we die we just die and you don't "wake up" is some heaven or staging area for the same. Once we are born and exist we can ask ourselves and others "I am a unique complex biological machine that is aware of itself and has the ability to figure out things and construct things which can alter the reality that we percieve all around us. So I cannot believe my awareness of myself and the reality around me can end upon my demise."
So are we just vain for not wanting to accept that our sense of self evaporates when we die? If so, how sad for us. Oh well!

A new captain boldly goes

If the new collider proves the oscillating version of the Big Bang, this would fit Buddha’s teaching that the universe expands and contracts in great cycles of vast time. The whole universe is reborn. Buddha taught that there are (impermanent) higher dimensions of existence, the collider may proves the existence of higher dimensions of time/space. Buddha taught that its not a soul that goes from life to life but a mental process, a mind stream of waves of consciousness, not some spiritual big ego Self, rather a sort of a super string phenomena on the mental level. Astrophysicist Wheeler made similar points in my discussion with him after an 80’s lecture at the Austin TX Unitarian Church on Eastern Religions and Modern Physics.
A new captain boldly goes

Does anyone truly understand all the inmplications of quantum physics? Several yrs ago I was sitting in my living roonm, neither drunk nor drugged, when I heard a sharp popping sound from my kitchen. Instantly, there flew into my living room a very strange looking bird of a kind I could not identify. It found a perch on my curtain rods and stared at me. With a sense of unease I entered the kitchen to see if the back door had been left open. It was closed and locked. As the hairs on the back of my neck rose, I opened the door and returned to the living room. With a shrill squawk the bird launched from the rods and flung itself through the open door. Slamming it closed I commenced to examine all windows and walls in the kitchen. All windows closed and all walls intact.
I later searched several ornithological reference works but could not find the creature.
Could it have entered my kitchen via a worm hole from a parallel universe? My dog, a schwerg pinscher, was intensely agitated, a not unnormal state for her, during this sequence of events. For about a week, she would stand in the doorway to the kitchen, stare at a point near the ceiling in the middle of the room and snarl. Her behavior soon normalized, but she still occasionally is reluctnnt to enter the kitchen alone. Severl other weird events have occurred in this home in the last three years. I attributed them all to prosaic circumstances at the times of their occurrence, but.....? The universe is definitely weirder than we can imagine.
