Tiny T. rex? Big surprise!

toe claw to a well-preserved skeleton of the tyrannosauroid known as Raptorex
kriegsteini. Click on the image to hear Sereno discuss the find.

Who would have thought Tyrannosaurus rex had such a murderous "mini-me" in its family tree?

Not Stephen Brusatte, a paleontologist at the American Museum of Natural History. "This was completely unexpected," he said.

And not University of Chicago paleontologist Paul Sereno, who along with Brusatte and other colleagues figured out that the tiny tyrannosauroid had virtually all the lethal weapons brandished tens of millions of years later by a behemoth 90 times more massive.

"From the teeth to the enlarged olfactory bulbs, the enlarged jaw muscles, the enlarged head, the small forelimbs, the lanky, running, long hindlimbs with thick-pressed foot for hunting prey - we see this all, to our great surprise, in an animal that is basically the body weight of a human," he told reporters.

The 125 million-year-old fossil dinosaur, unearthed in China and dubbed Raptorex kriegsteini, is "as close to the proverbial missing link on a lineage as we might ever get for tyrannosaurs," Sereno said.

The researchers laid out their conclusions in a paper published online today by the journal Science.

A T. rex expert who wasn't involved in the research, the University of Maryland's Thomas Holtz, agreed that the findings resolve some of the mysteries surrounding one of history's most fearsome predators. "It is unexpected, in a sense," he told me. "It really helps clarify what was previously a missing portion of the tyrant dinosaur family tree."

T. rex's tangled tale
Holtz, Sereno and many other paleontologists have been piecing together T. rex's family tree for decades. Before Raptorex, they knew that the species Tyrannosaur rex had similar-looking cousins in various parts of the world - Albertosaurus in Canada, for example, and Tarbosaurus in China. These creatures, known collectively as tyrannosaurids, weighed as much as 8 tons and occupied the top of the food chain when the age of dinosaurs ended 65 million years ago.

Todd Marshall
Weighing only a fraction as much as Tyrannosaurus rex, the 125 million-year-old Raptorex nevertheless exhibits a similar body plan in this artwork depicting both species.

Scientists also knew that these giants sprang from much smaller, more primitive ancestors that existed 125 million years ago, designated tyrannosauroids (with an extra "o"). The little 'roids had some characteristics in common with the big 'rids, but not the traits that made T. rex so special - for example, the little arms or the long runner's legs.

Some experts suggested that those changes in body plan must have arisen less than 125 million years ago, and somehow served as the decisive factor that made T. rex as big and dominant as it was. As the rest of the tyrannosaur became super-sized, the forearms dwindled into useless appendages. Or so the theory went.

Sereno said Raptorex refutes that claim by showing that the killer body predated the super-sizing trend. The creature measured only about 10 feet (3 meters long) in life, compared with the 40-foot (12-meter) head-to-tail span for Tyrannosaurus rex. But it had all the characteristics that have made T. rex so memorable in the popular imagination.

"This is part of a beautifully designed predatory blueprint, and it certainly was one of the most successful," he said.

How Raptorex came to light
The surprising features were found in a nearly complete fossil skeleton that was excavated years ago in northeastern China, one of the world's top fossil hot spots. "The specimen was found perhaps in the dark of night, spirited out of China and possibly sold," Sereno said.

The dinosaur bones - still encased in a block of sediment - turned up at an Arizona fossil show about six years ago, and were purchased by Henry Kriegstein, an opthalmologist and private fossil collector from Hingham, Mass. Kriegstein told me he paid "on the order of tens of thousands of dollars" for the specimen and had it sent it off to experts in Utah for preparation.

At first, Kriegstein and the paleontologists who advised him assumed that the fossil was a juvenile Tarbosaurus. But they eventually came to the realization that the creature was nearly full-grown - and might even represent a new genus and species. That's when Sereno was called in to study the case.

"I immediately agreed that I didn't want to have it in my living room," Kriegstein said.

Kriegstein and Sereno also agreed that the species name would pay tribute to Kriegstein's parents, who were born in Poland, survived internment in Nazi labor and concentration camps and made their way to the United States. (The genus name, Raptorex, is a catchy title basically meaning "King of the Raptors.") Kriegstein donated the specimen to the University of Chicago, with the understanding that the bones would eventually be returned to a museum in China.

Deciphering the bones
Sereno and his colleagues analyzed the sediment from Kriegstein's purchase, as well as clamshells and fish bones found alongside the dinosaur bones, to determine where the specimen came from and how old it was.

The fact that the bones were still encased in their surrounding soil when Kriegstein acquired them argues against the possibility that the bones were thrown together to create a fraud, as has sometimes been the case, Sereno noted.

Researchers also took pains to confirm that Raptorex was nearly fully grown: They cut through a fossilized femur bone to check the growth rings, and concluded that Raptorex was 6 years old, nearing maturity. The way that various bones were fused together supported that assessment.

Detailed measurements of the skeleton showed that Raptorex was, in most respects, a scaled-down version of T. rex - "jaws on legs, as it were," Sereno said. The pint-size predator used its fast-running legs to run down its prey, and perhaps run away from rivals as well. Its jaws were the first line of offense. Although its clawed forearms were small, they were likely well-suited for grasping and manipulating Raptorex's victims once they were enmeshed in the powerful jaws.

Sereno guessed that Raptorex's "most delectable" prey might have been parrot-beaked dinosaurs, with other small dinosaurs, ancient birds and turtles filling out its diet.

How did T. rex get so big?
When Raptorex lived, 125 million years ago, there were far bigger predators to look out for - allosaurs and spinosaurs, for example. During the 40 million years that followed, however, Raptorex's descendants apparently bulked up dramatically and inherited the earth. So what happened? The results reported today indicate there was no dramatic evolutionary innovation that gave T. rex an edge.

To be sure, a big T. rex was more dangerous than a little Raptorex. For one thing, the teeth became deadlier, Sereno noted. "The jowls stick out from the side of the skull, you get more of a brow, the neck becomes more like that of a fullback. Most of these things are a natural consequences of body size," he said.

But the basic blueprint was already set tens of millions of years earlier. "We cannot say that this incredibly successful, scalable blueprint for a predator was responsible for their total domination" among predators in the time frame between 85 million and 65 million years ago, Sereno said.

So what happened to the little tyrannosauroid's bigger rivals? "We don't know what, and we wish we did," Holtz said. Maybe there was a mass extinction that hit the bigger dinosaurs harder, clearing the way for tyrannosaurs - just as the eventual demise of the dinosaurs cleared the way for mammals. Maybe Raptorex's descendants just gradually chewed away at the big guys. The fossil record doesn't provide a clear answer.

For whatever reason, Sereno says, "these other guys went extinct - a fact that always happens periodically with any lineage of dinosaurs - opening the way for the expansion of these predatory, long-limbed, short-forelimbed, big strong-jawed predators like Raptorex to expand in body size."

"And when they did, there was no turning back until the asteroid hit," Sereno said.

Raptorex doesn't bring all the mysteries surrounding T. rex and its ancestors to an end. There are lots more gaps to be filled in when it comes to the tyrannosaur timeline, and Sereno and Brusatte have heard rumors that more revelations about early tyrannosaurids may be on the way.

In the meantime, Raptorex's bones will remain with the University of Chicago for further study. Eventually, they'll be shipped to their once and future resting place in Inner Mongolia, following what Sereno hopes will become "a pathway for other important specimens" that have been spirited out of China and should by rights be returned.

Kriegstein, the fossil collector who got all this started, will never have the bones in his possession again. But he does have the honor of a scientific name ("kriegsteini"), the satisfaction of knowing he did the right thing ... and a full-size resin cast of the skeleton that now occupies a prominent place in his home.

More on dinosaurs:

This report was updated to correct a reference to fish (not bird!) bones found amid the Raptorex skeleton. Many thanks to Paul Sereno for pointing that out.

In addition to Sereno, Brusatte and Kriegstein, co-authors of the Science paper include Lin Tan of China's Long Hao Institute of Geology and Paleontology, Xijin Zhao of the Chinese Academy of Science's Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology, and Karen Cloward of Western Paleontological Laboratories in Utah. The Raptorex find will be addressed in "Bizarre Dinos," a TV special due to premiere Oct. 11 on the National Geographic Channel.

Cool fossil and nice write-up! I'm so used to seeing popular news reports on dinosaurs make horrible errors that it's great to see one that gets the facts straight.
125 million years ago?  How is that possible?  Jesus wasn't even around then.
Evil always starts small!  Actually, I don't attribute motives of any sort to this critter, or any other.  You have to sentient to be evil.  Just trying to make a living and doing it well, apparently.

It is good to hear of someone doing what is right and Dr. Kreigstein certainly did it right.  It would be good to hear that he gets reimbursed for his expenses.  May be the money could be extracted from the dealer.

I can hardly wait for Horner to begin trumpeting that Raptorrex is actually a scavenging vegetarian that can't run!
How fortunate that the collector did the proper thing and donated the specimen to science.  It is also great that he was given a cast of the specimen for his collection.  Who knows what other scientifically important fossils are hidden or misidentified in private collections, the information they could provide in understanding ancient life kept from the community at large.
Sounds kind of like Spielberg's velociraptors.
The reason dinos exist is because when God cast lucifer out of heaven with 1/3 of the angels lucifer the devil now tried to create what god created in the garden animals, etc.  so all the reptiles are related to satan.  the snake was created in satans image.  man is created in gods image.
It is amazing what passes for science these days.  In another 125 million years, paleontologist will claim the Chinese evolved into Americans because Americans are larger.  "The fossil record doesn't provide a clear answer" may be the only accurate assessment in this entire story.

Patrick N. of IN..."Who knows what other scientifically important fossils are hidden or misidentified in private collections"

Ya and probably much like how many vertebrate fossils lay unidentified underground and waiting to be exposed.

The T-Rex is a saurician and NOT a "bird-hip", ornithishcian dino as one may conclude from the hip region of the above picture.

Bird hips types are this.  http://www.ucmp.berkeley.edu/diapsids/ornithischia/ornithischia.html

Hi,

Kudos on getting nearly all details accurate and speculation to a minimum.  There were no bird bones associated with the specimen, but rather fish bones, most referable to the bony fish Lycoptera.

Paul

[ALAN ADDS: Many thanks for pointing that out, Paul, I should have known to check the recording! The correction has been made above. Please feel free to write anytime, and congrats.]

The fact is more Scientifically important fossils are probably hidden or miss identified in public collections than lost to private collectors.Every year more and more great discoveries are being made in the basements of our great institutions. This is a issue that rarely gets the deserved intention
"The reason dinos exist is because when God cast lucifer out of heaven with 1/3 of the angels lucifer the devil now tried to create what god created in the garden animals, etc.  so all the reptiles are related to satan.  the snake was created in satans image.  man is created in gods image.          rv"

Yeah, and the reason the platypus exists is because God got stoned one day and started messing around.  With acknowledgement to Robin Williams, who's theory is LEAST as good as YOURS, rv!

These show, we have to learn alot about these species.
My hats off to the discoveries Paleantology has made since I was a kid, this stuff still makes my day!
Nothing is more fascinating than seeing someone try to justify the existance of something with no living examples, and attribute it to 'God's plan'.
A day in God's life would be significantly different than a day in yours and mine.  Every genious has to try more than once to get it right, stay tuned, it get's better.
Humans have changed noticably in the last two hundred years, and there are some apparent changes in the last century.  Although the methods of dating many of these finds are still a little rough around the edges, getting the same result with multiple sources puts things in a certain perspective...Keep up the good work!

Last I heard, T-Rex is now believed to have been feathered... what's up with the pictures?

[ALAN ADDS: Yes, actually, I meant to mention this. In the mockup of the Raptorex head that Paul Sereno had made up ... which appears in the video you can see by clicking on the image up top ... there are tufts of feathers added. Sereno thinks Raptorex probably had some feathers, just as other tyrannosauroids from that period apparently did. But you're correct to note that they're not shown in the drawing accompanying this item.]
This sounds like the life story of my ex-wife.
Too bad the pros keep acting as if the amateurs are thieves.  If there was a national program designed to replace the money spent and offer what Kriegstein got for the original fossil, we might finally bring the pros and amateurs together in a cooperative mission.  Passing stricter laws and solving disputes in court just drives more amateurs (who discover most of the significant finds) underground.  When will someone wake up and solve the problem?
It is nice to see something so rare appear and intact.Kudo's to the buyer for realizing what he had doing the right thin so we may continue to look for rare finds in China. As for some of the references made to Satan I'm sure that we don't know what Satan looks like just as we don't know what God looks like.
Speaking of dinosaurs- any one got an early 70's Cadillac for sale- I'll take the fossilized remains of that H Salt Esq. meal under the seat as well.
Glad it was found and is now back in public hands. But, you should not be suprised. Just look at dogs, cats, fish and etc. They come in all sizes and bone wise - large and small look alike. Just because it had not been found before does not mean it didn't exist. Expect the unexpected.
The interesting "fact" is that the remains were found with clam shells & fish bones. These were all buried together in a sedimentary layer and shows evidence of a flood; if you view the evidence with a Biblical worldview. The age given is so speculative it makes me want to laugh. Search out the truth for yourselves take in peculative facts from both sides of the coin and make a decision for yourself. Check out Answers in Genesis web site; see what their PHDs have to show you.
What the heck ever happened to Nanotyrannus and how is this any different?

[ALAN ADDS: There are other folks who know way more about this, including some folks who may be reading this blog, but there's some question whether Nanotyrannus was actually a juvenile T. rex. Also, if Nanotyrannus was truly a downsized tyrannosaurid (or is that -oid?) species, it is still thought to be a contemporary of T. rex, which means its existence would not shed additional light on dinosaur development. But again, the status of the Nanotyrannus question is murky in my mind.]
SO... Why is this not just an adolescent version of the T-Rex.  I remember the story of someone going into the Antique Shop and seeing two skulls, one larger than the other.  "What are those?" he asked. The owner answered, "That's the skull of Abraham Lincoln!"  "REALLY? What's the other?"  "Oh, that's the skull of Abraham Lincoln as a boy."
how do they know it is not just a young TRex?  Are the skeletons that different, that would not allow for a maturation process?

[ALAN ADDS: I mentioned in the article that they checked the growth rings in the bone as well as the way that bones were fused together to determine that the creature was almost mature when it died.]
Dinosaurs are sea creatures, not land animals. So they found a baby 't-rex' that was left high and dry after Noah's flood. Big deal.
rv....

Im also assuming that you beleive the earth is only 12000 years old?

As for the find, very interesting.  It makes me happy to hear about this sort of stuff in the news instead of who Paris Hilton is dating, or universal healthcare.

i have a 5 yr old son who is very interested in dinosaurs please send all the information you have, i have a feeling one day he well also become a scientist

[ALAN ADDS: Here's a long-running Web site that is geared toward kids:

http://www.enchantedlearning.com/subjects/dinosaurs/

[... And maybe other Cosmic Log correspondents will have other suggestions.]

Yoshi!!!!
There is absolutely no proof that these creatures are millions of years old.  It amazes me how so-called scientists along with our modern day liberal thinking just assume that these animals are this old.  The real problem is this. Evolutionists want to discredit creation so they can deny there is a God.

This way they don't have to acknowledge their sins and repent!  If you want science, the concept that a great flood occurred and devasted the planet has more scientific evidence than the comet theory.  Get right with God, look at the Bible for a starting point and then science will began to make a lot more sense!
As from a creationist standpoint I'm not sure we can believe the "125 million year", theroy, only cause civilization has alot younger value on this earth, only a few thousand years. And knowing that carbon dating hasn'nt been proven acurate in the past. But science can't always convince us all, can it?
Way to dig up the dirt on the new T-Rex progenitor Alan!  Seems rather logical that the Big T-Rex came from a smaller version and grew big over time.  Evolution in process.  It is so wonderful to see how the archaeologists have been able to uncover so many old bones and gain so much knowledge about our past.  They do humanity a great service in being able to trace our evolutionary history.

Ironic that from the big T-Rex's we get birds.  Ironic that the raptors survived by getting smaller and learning how to fly.  Good thing they got smaller, imagine the problem if big T-Rex's still flew.
This is why countries such as China and Italy are losing thousands of antiques to smugglers removing them from their respective countries. How on earth did someone manage to smuggle a 10 ft dinosaur fossil enclosed in sediment out of China?  If I were to try and send a 10 ft cube boulder that didn't look like marble out of the USA, there would be questions at the docks by customs.
Or...this is an excellent specimen of a young T Rex, found among clamshells and fish bones, rapidly buried during a global flood (hence the clamshells and fish bones), which happened within the 6,000 year old earth's history.  Hmmm...
My students REALLY enjoyed the article and are waiting to see the special in Oct.  The more gory the better for 9th graders.  Whatever grabs the students attention.  The moral issue was a great teaching tool, also. Thanks to all involved.  dspence
I can't believe people still think this has something to do with religion. Satan did not create dinosaurs! Wow.......people will concoct anything to help preserve there beliefs, and save face in an evolving society. When I was growing up we were taught in church that Satan placed dino fossil's in the earth to challenge the faith of christians. When I was a kid I believed that, now that I have learned a few things I do know that to be false, just as it is false that Noah carried millions of species of animals on an ark, or that Moses parted and crossed the Red Sea. (Actualy was The REED sea, which was a swamp that people could walk across)
The reason dinos exist is because when God cast lucifer out of heaven with 1/3 of the angels lucifer the devil now tried to create what god created in the garden animals, etc.  so all the reptiles are related to satan.  the snake was created in satans image.  man is created in gods image.

---I believe God created the universe and everything in it. Since when is Satan credited with the ability to create.  He is a fallen angel and had no powers to create before or after he was kicked out of heaven.  What are you smoking?
Many of the significant fossil sites were first explored by amateur fossil hunters who were responsible enough to alert the professionals.  Do not disparage against this small army of front line scientific investigators.
A Land Shark.  A very fast land shark.
If it couldn't keep the speed edge as it evolved bigger, perhaps coordinated pack hunting filled the gap?
What a fascinating discovery.
As they are telling us byt his article, they dont even know a damn thing about what has gone on in the world millions of years before us, because they're always surprising eachothers (scientists)its funny because they have to find an answer to everything and when finally they put their answers into text books and force us to digest their "Facts" they find something new and change the story up- we arent meant to know the "truth" cuz as the movie goes "You cant handle the truth" there were dinos here millions of years ago, the Bible said it and the Scientists found them, so what? lol when we are done and over with something else is going to dig us up and try to understand us and fail. but dinos are an awesome creature arent they? good day now
Is it not a fact that carbon or argon dating simply does not work?  How they can you say the ages of these fossils?  The answer is you cannot.  Not accurately anyways!
In college my professor of chemistry put the carbon dating formula on two lrg. blackboards. After finishing it he commented " who said that God didn't put it there yesterday!" Carbon dating isn't a Fact but just a theory. Like most theories that can't be proven for lack of correct information.
Fish bones and clamshells are evidence of the Great Flood?? Does that mean discoveries of ancient pottery and jewelry are evidence of The Great Swap Meet? Woe be unto he who scoffs at the literal truth of the Bible, for he shall be swallowed up in a sea of crappy imported merchandise, doomed for all time to haggle with Satan's minions over the price of used underwear!
The reason dinos exist is because when God cast lucifer out of heaven with 1/3 of the angels lucifer the devil now tried to create what god created in the garden animals, etc.  so all the reptiles are related to satan.  the snake was created in satans image.  man is created in gods image.
rv (Sent Thursday, September 17, 2009 9:22 PM

i'm sorry but this is funny. first of all lucifer was and still is an angel just fallen that does not make him snake like that would mean that all angels are, right? but this discovery is cool i have all ways loved dinos. and the reason all this scientfic stuff keeps changing is that we discover more that includes are own Evolution there are many things that we are still learning about our selves and our history that is why the history books keep changing that and we are adding to that history also so please keep the bad comments about god out of it thx
Carbon dating and all that is not exactly necessary.  You can also go about dating (more or less) by comparing sediment layers. Its not that complicated. Read a book for crying out loud.
I think that radiation is one of the factors that figures in to the growth and demise of a dino some could tolerate and grew and those that could not died and made room for new ones until the meteor
How can the same people who espouse the existence of God make a claim such as 'part of a beautifully designed predatory blueprint'. If there is no God, who created the design?
We all know that most science is not an "exact" science, but a gathering of facts and conjecture to form theories.  Both scientists and creationists claim to have all the answers, but I've yet to see anything to prove either one to be true or false.  Our world is vast and wondrous, and we may never have all the answers, but looking for them is so much fun.
RV  uuuuhuh  and you have that on scientific authority do you?
You know, I can only read so many comments about creationism and God before it stops being funny and starts being ignorant. Have any of you ever read a book outside of the Bible? Don't get me wrong, the Bible is a good read, but you can't try to tie everything in our existence to a book that WE WROTE, NOT GOD. I find it absolutely insane that someone wrote how the dinos were killed during Noah's flood. Really? You do know that even IF Noah's flood happened as per it's description in the Bible, dinosaurs and humans (or more accurately "homo-sapiens") DID NOT EXIST IN THE SAME TIME PERIOD. I am so so SO tired of listening to ignorant people posting comments that state how I need to learn about God, but haven't taken a moment out of their lives to read a legitimate scientific research paper.

As for this discovery, absolutely fascinating! I'm sorry it came down to addressing the ignorance of others first, but I do want to say keep up the good work! One of the most important factors of science is questioning the accepted truths, and trying to find out what really happened. If I've learned anything from science, it's that nothing is ever written in stone (and even if it is, it will probably wash away from erosion!). Also, kudos to Mr. Kriegstein for doing the right thing and sharing his discovery with the world, and good luck to all scientific minds everywhere, you're all doing great work and it's appreciated more than you know. Don't get discouraged by fools, as Einstein once said "Great spirits have often encountered violent opposition from weak minds." Or something like that, it always gets misquoted. Also for all you Bible thumpers Einstein also said this - "Science without religion is lame. Religion without science is blind."
Those Arizona rock shows are about due to reconsider their standards for vendors and specimen provenance...new dinosaur type specimens show up on the black market there regularly and predictably. Falcarius redux?

However the fossil black market has produced an interesting collection bias favoring small vertebrates. Not only do private collectors like to buy smaller fossils, but paleontologists and land managers now have some motivation to get smaller fossils out of the field where they are vulnerable to illegal collection. This has undoubtedly advanced paleontology and widened its scope. Glad to see this dino will make it back to its country of origin.
you know its amzing the things people find. A scaled down version of Tyrannosaurus, its well stated.I like it Great find!
