Web weathers celebrity send-off

Fans of Michael Jackson weep in the German city of Cologne on Tuesday as they
watch the public memorial service for "The King of Pop" on large video screens.

Chastened by Inauguration Day's online video breakdowns, Web sites bulked up their capacity to handle the crush of traffic for pop star Michael Jackson's memorial service on Tuesday - and statistics showed that the bits flowed at mostly manageable levels.

When President Barack Obama took office on Jan. 20, so many people were watching online that some sites couldn't keep up with the flow. The benchmark number for that day was 7.2 million active streams, as recorded by Akamai, a Massachusetts-based company that handles high-traffic events for a long list of Web sites, including msnbc.com.

Tuesday's active-stream count passed the 2 million mark shortly after the 10 a.m. PT service began, and rose as time went on. What's more, those video viewers shifted their focus from recorded clips ("on demand") to the live streams.

The count surpassed 2.5 million at 11 a.m., and hovered around 2.77 million at 11:50 a.m. After the service ended and the mourners moved on, the count drifted down to 2.5 million at 1:15 p.m and sank below 1.7 million just before 2 p.m. PT. By that time, the on-demand video streams outnumbered the live streams.

Celebrities from the entertainment world were clearly the draw during the Webcast: Akamai's real-time video-stream count slumped slightly when the Rev. Al Sharpton took the stage (OK, he's a fiery orator, but can he sing?), then rebounded when singer/songwriter/guitarist John Mayer took his place. The ups and downs could serve as an instant rating service for a particular star's appeal. (Sharpton at -20 per second, Mayer at +40. Brooke Shields started out at +10 but fell to -20 as her tribute went on. Martin Luther King III came in at -80.)

Whether it was Stevie Wonder or Sharpton, Mayer or Shields, the Webcast was clearly the draw on the Web: Akamai's tally of traffic to the news sites in its network peaked at 3.9 million visitors per minute just before the service started, then dropped off - suggesting that Web users were passing up static Web pages to focus on the pages that offered video. In comparison, Akamai said the peak visitors-per-minute rate for June 25, the day Jackson died, was 4.2 million.

Massive media convergence
The overall Web traffic figures for the Michael Jackson saga have generally fallen short of the peaks registered during last November's election coverage, Inauguration Day and prime sports events such as the NCAA basketball playoffs.

But when it comes to Michael Jackson and his legacy, the real action is in the convergence of cable TV, online video, blogs and social networking sites such as Twitter and Facebook. The flurry of tweets about #MichaelJackson on June 25 put a heavy load to Twitter's 140-character-at-a-time social network (which was also humming with #iranelection tweets).

Facebook reported that its users were averaging 6,000 status updates per minute during the memorial service - which was roughly 2,000 more per minute than the average for the Inauguration Day ceremonies.

Msnbc.com set up a hybrid interface that let users tweet about the event while they were watching it on video (and earned a "Streamie" for the effort).

In addition to the online action, big screens around the world carried the video signal from the service, Michael Jackson fans gathered around television sets to share the experience, and Cinedigm Digital Cinema Network beamed the event to more than 80 movie theaters nationwide.

Alan Wurtzel, chief of research at NBC Universal, told The Associated Press that the Michael Jackson coverage represented "the first multiplatform-significant culture event." (NBC Universal is a partner in the msnbc.com joint venture.)

No big impact on the intertubes
As the day proceeded, Akamai tweeted its traffic statistics on a regular basis. California-based Keynote Systems, which monitors mobile-device and Internet performance, was also watching the flow of data traffic closely. Keynote's senior director for external operations, Shawn White, told me in an e-mail before the service that he wouldn't be surprised if some of the video streams suffered degradation because of high traffic.

But there was no major impact on the Internet's overall performance. "So far we are seeing some slowdowns on The Keynote News Web Site Performance Index," Keynote spokesman Dan Berkowitz said in an e-mail just after noon PT Tuesday. "Overall, the Internet is performing OK (that is based on The Keynote Business 40 Web Performance Index)."

Although the overall Internet easily handled the load, data monitors cautioned that individual network users might experience slowdowns because of localized traffic jams - for example, on your company's computer network. "The IT folks in my office are blaming our slow processing speed on the online streaming," one of my Facebook friends told me.

On the mobile-phone front, Verizon Wireless reported that attempts to connect with the company's voice network between 10 a.m. and noon PT Tuesday were up 10 percent over Monday's comparable levels, and data attempts (for texting and Web use) were up 86 percent. "The networks worked perfectly normally," Verizon's Debi Lewis reported in an e-mail.

Video traffic
Early Tuesday, Keynote's White said Michael Jackson's memorial service would likely rank just behind Inauguration Day on the list of significant online news events. (The 9/11 terror attacks of 2001 ranks third on White's list - in part because they took place when Web-based media, and particularly online video, weren't as mature as they are today.)

"With the inauguration, there was so much expectation and hype, anticipation and excitement," White said in his e-mail. "Also, most schools throughout the country, from elementary school through college, had their students watch the inauguration - much of it online. For Jackson’s memorial service, it was something completely unexpected and more of a somber event."

It was also an event taking place during midsummer, when folks tend to minimize the time they spend peering at a TV or a computer screen.

Generally speaking, the video traffic figures confirmed White's one-two prediction, although there were some extra twists. Msnbc.com, for example, delivered a little more than 3 million live streams of the service (compared with more than 9 million live streams reported for Inauguration Day). However, msnbc.com said the total streams (including on-demand video) added up to about 19 million - which surpassed the 18.2 million reported for Jan. 20.

The NewTeeVee blog said CNN registered 9.7 million live streams (vs. 25 million live streams claimed for Inauguration Day). Yahoo said Tuesday's 5 million total streams outdid Inauguration Day's 1.8 million, making the memorial service the "most streamed" event in the company's history.

How did you experience (or not experience) today's events? Feel free to leave a comment below.

Last updated 1 p.m. ET / 10 a.m. PT July 9. Yahoo's figures for Tuesday's streaming were initially characterized as coming in second to Inauguration Day, but that order was based on simultaneous streams. The order was reversed for total streams, and as a result the characterization has been changed. Msnbc.com's traffic figures also were updated as more data became available.

Reminds me of a song by The Eagles "Get Over It"
When he was a little kid performing with his brothers he was pretty good afterwards he became a petafile.
When young women and men are dying in the military defending freedom it is a sad mistake to honor this person.
The guy was one of the lowest common denominators we could come up with .... essentially uneducated, a questionable pedophile, an absolute whacko .... oh ya, .... a decent musician and dancer.

Is this the best we can come up with as a country and society????
Alan,
I looked for your book "The Case For Pluto" in Books-A-Million yesterday. Yeah. They didn't have it. What a bummer. Online shopping ftl. I prefer instant gratification when I make a purchase. But I'll do it for you buddy. What other books would you recommend reading? kthnxbai
I can't believe how bad the satellite reception was during the memorial.  The internet was somewhat better at times but it too was broken for this. Technology is supposed to work..not not work !
The internet performance is AWEFUL!!!!  Some of us are recording this to watch later so that we can get some work done NOW!  And I can't!
Oh wow, you KNOW he was a pedophile which by the way, you can't spell.  In this great country we have a jury system and they found him innocent so get over it.
He was a kook and a pervert. The FCC should investigate why the airwaves were used to celebrate a nuts deth. King of Pop, i don't think so! KIng of Garbage, Yes!!!!!
Greetings MSNBC, good coverage. Watched the SERVICE at Yorktown Arms Apartments, a Senior Complex for Seniors in Philadelphia. We all agreed it was a wonderful and appropriate Memorial SERVICE, not a SHOW as referenced repeatedly by your commentators.
It was a good thing
"Tried" to watch on cnn.com AND msnbc.com--both sucked so bad it was ridiculous. How many years have we had the internet??? It was like watching the 1st streaming from the 90's. These carriers should be ashamed--it was an embarassment! I don't get it.
Dear Aegliss: The book isn't out quite yet ... in fact, today is the day I'm supposed to receive the page proofs to correct. Some Web sites allow you to reserve the book, and I will add those Web sites to the little blurb on the bottom of this story. If you promise to at least consider buying "The Case for Pluto," I would mention Neil Tyson's "The Pluto Files" (which could be characterized as "The Case Against Pluto") or the Stern/Mitton book "Pluto and Charon" (but be sure you get the 2005 edition). Another book on the subject is "Pluto Confidential" (Maran/Marschall), which I haven't seen but is due out in August. But I humbly hope you'll find my book to be the most entertaining and insightful of the bunch.  ;-)
How can you people still condemn MJ still in death? He will be judged by the one and only One who matters, who are we to judge, especially now when so many of are greiving, his fans, his family and mostly his children. Let him rest in peace and let those of us who admired and adored him for all he gave to the world unselfishly rememeber him and celebrate his life. Can any of you that oppose Michael say that you lived your life any better than he? How dare you express such ill feelings toward a man who was nothing less than an unbiased humanitarian. May Michael know live in peace and away from those who judged him so fervently.
A fantastic memorial to the brightest star on the planet :)  Watched it on Hulu and it was 98% stutter-free.
I think that if you are at work, its difficult to watch unlike Obama's inauguration which was more acceptable to view during business hours- not to mention it wasn't as long.
The memorial was on target and respectful... For those who like Michael it was great, for those who thought he was twisted, you have not been paying attention. He was framed all the way. You really need to follow current events.

He was a friend to those he would let in and mystery to own family at times, but he was never Wacko-Jacko. I do not believe for one second Brooke Shields would have been around anything but a proper person.

Lastly, he was an exceptional and loving father who kids loved him as he adored and loved them.

I believe if you did not like the show you do not have a heart.. Sorry you loose !! and blog entry in BTrash (Blog Trash) and just about everyone will know that you are NUTS.

Hey, DanP, what's a "petafile"? Is that some paperwork that PETA keeps in drawers at their office? How do you know anyway? I seem to recall that he was acquitted of the charges.  And, I also recall that at least two of the witnesses in the trial perjured themselves on the stand!  On of the boys' mothers had been previously convicted of welfare fraud.  These are the only people who could come up with "evidence"?  The extortionists did get away with a lot of his money, though.  Did you not read Maccauley Culkin's statement that there was absolutely no truth to the rumors? He probably spent the most time with the man of anyone.  I know that Michael is up there in Heaven, and he's having the time of his life, having the childhood he never had here. It's not a mistake at all to honor this man.  Why would we not?
It's simply shameful that even in this man's death, this reporter (Alan Boyle) can find nothing else to nick pick and highlight, but-among other things-weather or not fans were interested in listening to Rev. Al Sharpton!

A man... A person has passed. One who obviously had an impact on millions, WORLD-WIDE. It's so disrespectful that this is what Alan Boyle chose to focus on, rather than realizing that although televised, this was a memorial to someone's death. Some one with a family. Have some respect for that at least. There are those in the media that will forever find the negative in whatever they cover.

Rest in peace Michael Jackson. Thanks for the music and memories.

Um ... Carolyn Thyme ... they also found OJ Simpson not guilty of murder. Huh.
MSNBC:  The place for pandering.  A 7 hour embarassment to the station which is supposed to be about real news and politics.  If this is convergence, and convergence is the way of the future, the future of Cable Television is pretty bleak.
Another case to support "The dumbing of America". Somewhere and at sometime we lost what and who are important to this nation. Glorifying Michael Jackson who was a lunatic, sexual offender and condemning and forgetting the real heroes of this nation who are fighting for our freedom seems to be the norm. I'm celebrating the fact that my children are that much safer today.
I love what Al Sharpton said to his kids.  Your father was not strange.  Strange things happened to him.
Right on Christina...it's disgusting that MJ didn't have peace in life and people won't let him have peace in death.  If you didn't like him, think he's a pervert, whatever, keep it to yourself.  He was acquitted by a jury in court of all this crap that people are still talking about; let it go...If it's that important that you want to hear about other news, look for it yourself.  But let us true MJ fans mourn him for the true star he was...
For all of you who are commenting on something that has already been settled, please move on.  Your opinion is just that an opinion.  For all who participated in this wonderful celebration of Michael Jackson, hold on to the memories and pray for the Jackson Family.
I kept the TV off all day and wrote an entry for my Pluto Blog, as I find Pluto far more interesting than any so-called "celebrity."

And I would never, ever, ever watch anything that gave a shred of spotlight to the perpetually untalented Brooke Shields, an embarrassment to the craft of acting. I'm the actress born in 1965 whose got real talent, and I'm a lot prettier too. Just remember the name "Plutogirl."
very sweet and beautiful coverage to a true music legend, thanks so much for televising this and i received via satelite=direct tv without problems.Michael was a man with problems who was a very troubled child star and was deprived of his childhood and was abused by his father Joe Jackson. this is also why child stars have suffered...
Sorry to see him go this way due to an overdose of drugs and a heart attack.Michael Jackson still had a lot to do and his time here was cut short as GOD called him to teach music and dance to the angels and the heavenly host in heaven, either THAT OR THE DEVIL HAS JUST PROVED THAT HELL IS ROCKING AND and may not be such A BAD PLACE
From someone who has loved all the music from the Jackson 5 to Michael, Latoya and Janet. Thank you for the yrs and yrs of enjoyment. I send condolences and hope they band together to support their new challenges.
I wish nothing more than internal peace, confidence and success for his children at ALL the moments in their lives. This may be more important than all the beautiful music he created. I hope for this to be his legacy...HAPPY, WELL ADJUSTED, SELF CONFIDENT AND SELF LOVING children.
it dosen't matter if you loved him or hated him, his popularity shows that he is the biggest star in the past thirty something years. even for the haters to actually acknowledge his name and fame. let me address the haters, please keep hating it is people like you who makes us appreciate his legacy more than we might admit.
I've cried through the entire memorial. It feels like I have lost the dearest friend. I have never been a fan of MJ, but his music has always been present in my life. After his death, I have done some research -read a lot about the man, and watched lots of videos on the internet. The mankind has lost one of the best, a true genious, the most loving and giving person, an amazing Human Being. I am proud I lived at the time Michael was creating. I will miss you terribly. I love you.
An interesting article about media coverage.  For those that study the Bible and end times prophesy, it immediately made me think of the prophesy of the 2 witnesses who will be killed and all the eyes of the world will be watching.  (Reference Revelations chapter 11)

Our global expansion of media coverage and available outlets for viewing certainly makes this prophecy more plausible.  Sorry, not trying to make this article about religion, though Jackson's family is very religious.  But, that was my first thought in reading this piece about the media coverage.
To Danny Furr of Murrells Inlet...you are celebrating because you felt your children are safer now that MJ is dead...did you or your children even meet or know him well because you sounded like MJ is just around the corner of your house looking for your kids to prey on...get real!
I am from the Philippines and I don't subscribe to a cable TV service.  Thanks to MSNBC.com, I was able to watch the entire event through the net. Nice coverage, NBC.
Urgent distress call to the Kepler mission: Please, please, find me a decent planet with genuinely intelligent life where the inhabitants reserve the term "star" for self-luminous bodies in the sky and resources such as gold are used to serve the living, not the dearly departed. Clean, non-polluted air, land, and water strongly preferred. In short, get me off this rock ASAP!
If my uncle ted had the same lawyers that mj did he might not be sitting in prison right now for the exact same thing.  For those of you who defend him did you guys defend oj too?  wow I wish I were famous so I could break amy laws I want and have a good enough lawyer to get me out of it AND I would have a cult of worshipers to defend my "good name"
RIP MJ... hope you are at peace now, far away from these crappy people who made your life on earth so miserable.
stop bashing michael jackson. thats all anyone ever did when he was alive and now when he is dead.
have SOME RESPECT.
he meant a lot to people around the world. have you no care for how he has changed the world expecially for black people.
have some respect.
I don'k know why some people never get to move on. Michael Jackson is the greatest musical symbol that has ever lived and probably ever will. He was aquited of  ******* charges put together by broke people. Long live MJ, long live the KING OF POP, LONG LIVE The Greatest.
"past month's Michael Jackson saga"? He only passed away on June 25.  No need to exaggerate.
A medium has posted some messages from Michael Jackson, the information doesn't sound far-fetched.
http://blog.wisdominlight.com/wordpress/
I watached a little on MSNBC on line, but I watched the rebroadcast on TVOne at 8:00 p.m. EST

It's amazing how people are not recognizing what his family and his fame (media/fans) have done to this man. He was so psychologically damaged by his childhood that he was a little strange yes but the more I learn about him and his life the more I realize he was a good man just totally misunderstood. He had such a crapy life that the least he deserves is recognition in death. Put yourself in his place for one second and hopefully you will look at things a little different.

Got to admit, biggest star for his time in the limelight.  TOO MANY distractions, UNUSUAL events, and subplots to annoint him the "BEST".  ALL the best entertainers have had "shadowy" lifes. Elvis, Garland,
pick and choose.

Michael was the best at what he did.  His efforts to advance human care across the globe is undeniable.

Let him rest in peace.  The family will continue to create headlines with the will(s), finances, control and the like.  The children need a SECURE and LOVING environment.

REALLY, the games have just begun for control and access to whatever remains of material value in his estate.  LET IT GO!  The public WILL NOT influence a judical decision (at least it shouldn't).
"When he was a little kid performing with his brothers he was pretty good afterwards he became a petafile. "

"Hey, DanP, what's a "petafile"? Is that some paperwork that PETA keeps in drawers at their office?"

Nah, it must mean a file of at least 10^15 bytes in size. Maybe he means Mike had his mind uploaded and something else was running his body ever since?

It could explain the endless physical alterations...
Michael Jackson untimely death has effected all of us.  One can only imagine the  turmoil his family is feeling.  My heart and prayers go out to them and his children.  Rest in peace Michael.
Come to think of it, I remember thinking it odd that a 11 year old boy was singing songs about boy-girl things that certainly never happened to 11 year olds..or 12, or 13 or young teens. I always thought Michael Jackson was too young to be singing songs like " Oh baby give me one more chance...I want you back" etc....it seemed contrived to me.
The memorial was beautiful and moving. I watched it on TV, didn't even try to watch it online. The whole service was geared toward revealing Michael Jackson as a human being, treasured by those who knew and loved him, and I think that was accomplished. Perhaps we can extend the same courtesy to him in death, and stop denigrating the man over unproven allegations. If you didn't appreciate his musical genius, don't listen to him.
yes, I tried all of the major news organizations without success.  I don't say how you can judge it a success when a high-speed connection in Annapolis couldn't get access.  Maybe it's your wishful thinking, but it is shameful that in 2009 an event like MJ's service could knock out internet access.
Don't people relise, hate is like acid. It also destroys the vessle that contains it...Please for your own sake, cleanse out your hearts.. We are not the judge....Think of the suffering his children are going through, his Mother and family.
If Michael was a "petafile" what was Elvis?  Many people still worship him for messing with a 14 year old when he was a grown man.  The world watched this, approvingly.  Further, the charges against him are not true just because you want them to be.  Either post your "proof" or STFU.  It is not inconceivable that folks would lie for money and defame him.  I work in childcare and children and their parents do say things.  It is the most awful thing to be accused of abusing a child when it is not true.  Even when the facts prove you innocent, a terrible stigma remains.  They photographed his genitals and everything else.  If he were guilty, he would have gone to jail because they were salivating to convict him.  Let him rest! One good thing is that to be present with God is to be away from all the evil haters.

Love you, Michael.  Didn't know you meant so much to me, until the tears began and didn't stop.  Thanks for everything you gave to us.
I live in Mexico and watched the Service at NBC4 and it had a perfect connection :) I think it was very emotional, couldn't stop crying. Another star in the sky now. So long Billie Jean!
