See a black hole's blast

Posted: Thursday, January 29, 2009 9:04 AM by Alan Boyle

ESO
This composite image of Centaurus A shows lobes and jets emanating from the
galaxy's central black hole. The image combines data from the APEX radio
telescope, the Chandra X-ray Observatory and the MPG/ESO 2.2-meter telescope.

Radio observations are filling out an impressive picture of huge jets blasting out from a galactic black hole. The latest findings support the view that Centaurus A is a giant particle accelerator, powered by the active galaxy's matter-sucking monster.

Centaurus A is a giant elliptical galaxy that's in the process of merging with a companion spiral galaxy, about 13 million light-years from Earth in the southern constellation Centaurus. Like our own Milky Way galaxy, Centaurus A has a supermassive black hole at its center, with a mass equal to 100 million suns. (Our galaxy's supermassive black hole is wimpy in comparison, weighing only as much as 4 million suns.)

All that crashing, smashing and swirling around Centaurus A sparks intense star formation, making it one of the most spectacular objects in the sky - particularly when it comes to radio and X-ray emissions.

The latest image from the European Southern Observatory combines a true-color background view from the Wide Field Imager on the ESO's 2.2-meter telescope at La Silla in Chile with an X-ray view (in blue) from the Chandra X-ray Observatory and the radio view from the Large APEX Bolometer Camera. That camera, also known as LABOCA, is mounted on the international APEX submillimeter-wave radio telescope in Chile.

LABOCA's submillimeter view plainly shows the heat glow from the galaxy's dusty main disk and the bright radio emission from the galaxy's center. It also shows the radio emissions from jets of accelerated particles shooting north and south from the center.

As detailed in an image advisory issued Wednesday, such emissions occur when fast-moving electrons spiral around the lines of a magnetic field. The electrons emanating from Centaurus A are traveling at half the speed of light, and then slamming into the surrounding gas to create a shock wave. That's what's causing the bluish X-ray emissions that are most prominent in the lobe the lower right of the galaxy.

This artist's conception of a galactic black hole is
similar to the ESO's picture of the real thing.

Those jets and lobes are the coolest features of the image, and they don't always show up in pictures of Centaurus A. (Here's an example). LABOCA's sensitivity to submillimeter wavelengths is well-suited for charting the radio emissions from the outflow. That's one of the subjects covered in a research paper published by the journal Astronomy and Astrophysics.

The team behind the LABOCA observations was led by Axel Weiss of Germany's Max Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy. Other members of the Max Planck team include Attila Kovacs, Rolf Güsten, Karl M. Menten, Frederic Schuller, Giorgio Siringo and Ernst Kreysa.

We've had a veritable banquet of black hole tales over the past month - so take advantage of this all-you-can-eat smorgasbord:

This is what this Monster looked like 13 million
years ago. I wonder what it looks like today?
What might happen if the astroid Apophis, or 2007 VK184 hit the earth?  The earth's atmosphere dose deteriorate most of the artroid correct, or could they potentially be a threat?
Afganistan, Wall Street, a bad economy, the list goes on.  Too many narrow minded people, consumed by the tick and tock of living, won't take time or the opportunity to marvel at this picture.  I grinned ear to ear looking at it.  I will really enjoy visiting there when I must give up this tired bag of meat.
Sceintists can't work out the size of what's outside the universe, because you have to keep putting it into another universe. It's eternal it's God that's why you can't measure it!!!!!!
with the sheer size of the universe its hard to believe we're the only planet with life.do you think we'll ever know in our lifetimes?
Luella Stelck (1/29, 1752) wrote, "How is the north and south on a black hole determined?"
Excellent question.  North and south are defined by rotation.  On our planet if you view the planet from a spot on the rotational axis outside the planet and the planet rotates in a CCW direction you are above the north pole.  Same with the sun and solar system.  I'm not sure if that holds for all planets and it doesn't hold for all celestial bodies.  I don't know how it's defined for black holes.  You might wiki it.  Not of any help if you plan on going out and classifying black holes, but the short answer is north and south are defined by rotation.
thank you for sharing :>
If the earth got sucked in, would we be able to still live on earth???
Wow, that is so fasinating! What a beautyful universe we amerge in, exist in. Life is so powerful to the human eye! Thank you for the photos.
After reading all the messages and Alan's responses to questions, there is nothing more I really need to add, except keep on putting these articles on the internet.
That was so amaizing!!!
I have always wondered how exactly something like this takes place. It is quite beautiful, I will have to look deeper into these kinds of things now.
WOW.

But I do have one question, if something like this "Black Hole" came closer what exactly do you speculate would happen to our solar system?
Can't anybody say, "Wow, this is cool, wonder how long it's been going on?, before we had the tech that we do.
This is awesome, another picture of the grandeur of creation, God is in control. Thank you, for posting these images for all to see.
Just when you think you know it all about everything, an image like this is super fasinating to everyone! You may think we're the #1 thing on this planet, but there's so much out there we can all learn about-It blows my mind to see such beautiful images, & hope the space program is never compromised at all...
You may/may not believe in a creator, but, just look what's out there, & tell me that there's nothing out there. I call it "space magic." You think you've seen all there's to see out there, but it's wrong...Just thinking of all the stuff out there, & things just waiting to happen out tehre, well...it is a dreamers paradise out there. Thank God for science fiction! :-)
If black holes are caused by collapsing stars and no known force can stop the collapse then aren't all black holes in space still actively collapsing?
This is just amazing!  Thank you, Alan Boyle!  I've always loved astronomy...and I really wish I had an aptitude for physics and math to the degree necessary for a career in astrophysics.  This is awesome!
wow. nature is amazing, right? cool. hey i heard that the world is going to end in 2012. does anybody here believe that? does anyone have any evidence that i can share?
Thank you, Tim Rommes.  You have just led this 52-year-old woman to an epiphany regarding direction and rotation in space.  Be proud, Tim; many have tried and failed where you have succeeded!

Are you taking questions on the supposed event of December 21, 2012.  The Internet is plugged with doomsday fears about the alignment of the Sun and the relationship to the Mayan calander.  Do you think there is any reason for concern?

[ALAN ADDS: No, I don't see any reason for concern. This is similar to the hype that preceded the Year 2000 turnover and 2001 turnover, as well as the Grand Alignment of May 2000. After the 13th cycle of the long Mayan calendar, you just begin again with the 14th cycle. Here's a debunking post recommended by Phil Plait of Bad Astronomy fame:]

This is very wonderful to look at its really a beauty
this is indeed the creation of our lord and savior Jesus christ by the Holy Spirit and the Father. Man seeks to know about the Lord`s creation but the
Lord already know what he has created. [...]
Love you all
TOTALLY amazing! WOW! In spite of ALL the problems here on Planet Earth; there so much MORE beyond "us". WE should keep this in mind.
impressive and you only get to this almost in just one lifetime.
what is really something is the dimension of the apparent bow shock in the lower right portion of the pic as all that accelerated matter slams into extra-galactic gas.
A great picture with a lots more info although I know little about them. Thank you for sharing your finding works with us and may continious good luck be with your team Alan.

um when it says charged particle generator what does it mean... speaking from a 17 year old's point of view, and not a very sound one, it sounds like if you were to create a smaller version of a black hole inside a satellite we could charge the particles into a beam... this is probably not what it means, so clarify if you can

[ALAN ADDS: Stars are magnetically powerful dynamos, as are black holes. When material falls into the black hole, it is drawn in among the magnetic lines of force ... whipping up particles to speeds approaching the speed of light. The magnetic lines channel all that energy outward. It would be pretty hard to duplicate that kind of dynamo artificially inside a satellite ... but if you could, it might be possible to channel the energy just as a black hole does. That might make something like a death ray possible. I hope you're not planning on following the career track for an evil genius.   ;-)    All the best to you!]

The bible says in the last days there would be signs in the sky and earthquakes and trouble time  we are there now  if you have now been born again  with JESUS Christ as  your LORD  it time now
thanking  about it  thank  you for this news   MICKEY
space is very interesting. i didn't know a black hole could do that...i would love to go to space and see all the amazing things out there. Hopfully we will have the technology to go beyond our solar system and see more cool things like that.
I LOVE HOW THE STARS LOOK I HAVE BEEN WONDERING SEENS JAN THE 6 ABOUT THE MOON AND THE STAR THAT WERE CLOSE TOGETHER WHY WHRE THEY TOGETHER? BUT IF ANYONE HAS THE ANSWER PLEASE SEAD ME A MESSAGE I WILL LOVE TO KNOW AND I HOPE U HAVE MORE THINGS ABOUT THE STARS AND PLANETS IT WILL BE GREAT
Make-it-so number-one.....
God is truly amazing for creating such a wonderful universe!!! :)
What will happen when the super collider is cranked up? How will that mass affect other masses in this cosmos?
huhhuh it like a kitten with a ball of yarn...or a puppy with a bone, or a goat with horns...
Great image of the marvels of space that our earth forms a tiny tiny spec of!A lot seems to be out there as we are busy fighting one another on the beautiful little mother earth! Send more pics as they become available! Just curious too...the distance between us and the galaxy means this event happened a long time ago?....?....
I think it's totally unfair how the government won't share what is really going on with our planet, including the unwanted visitors that visit our planet from time to time. first of all as human were all guaranteed to die someday, why not tell the people what's going on before someone else does !
This is so Impressive
Can any body see the analogy to the chemistry bonds in between atoms. Just on enormous scales. It is very interesting how life is, it is a lot of repeated concepts small or large.
What a fantastic age we live in!  What a breath-taking view of such an extraordinary sight.  Thanks for the pictures!
image of Centaurus A shows lobes and jets emanating from the galaxy's central black hole.  Since these jets seem to travel away from the galaxy central core they must be traveling at the speed of light.  High energy particles possible photons or gamma rays. We should all be glad our galaxy only has a small black hole 4 million suns.  We would all be toast right now if we lived there.
FASCINATING AND BEAUTIFUL :]
God can come to you through his son Jesus and show you all his greatness. space is beautiful and all the stars have names as the bible has told us. He also said his way are above are ways as the heavens are above the earth, I really enjoy the pic.s
nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo maybe the world can end,wao i want to go to space
This is asum!
yessssssssss
THAT LOOKS AMAZING.............

HOPE I CAN GO TO SPACE AND SEE THAT SOME DAY, IT WOULD BE THE COOLEST THING EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I LOVE BLACK HOLES THEY ARE SO PRETTY.
Hey, my class likes these really cool pics from space.  We have a fully loaded classroom, with all the latest visual equipment, so we are enjoying all this incredible space photography. It reinforces much of our curriculum this year.  Thanks
Well I've read quite a bit on Black holes how nothing not even light itself can escape the pull of the black hole... My question that has yet to be answerd is that Is a black hole's force a pull or just a rip in space and time were no matter what it is it falls into it energy (light) and Matter (anything that takes up space)???
absolutely gorgeous. not a big space or science freak but it is amazing none the less.
