See a black hole's blast

Posted: Thursday, January 29, 2009 9:04 AM by Alan Boyle

ESO
This composite image of Centaurus A shows lobes and jets emanating from the
galaxy's central black hole. The image combines data from the APEX radio
telescope, the Chandra X-ray Observatory and the MPG/ESO 2.2-meter telescope.

Radio observations are filling out an impressive picture of huge jets blasting out from a galactic black hole. The latest findings support the view that Centaurus A is a giant particle accelerator, powered by the active galaxy's matter-sucking monster.

Centaurus A is a giant elliptical galaxy that's in the process of merging with a companion spiral galaxy, about 13 million light-years from Earth in the southern constellation Centaurus. Like our own Milky Way galaxy, Centaurus A has a supermassive black hole at its center, with a mass equal to 100 million suns. (Our galaxy's supermassive black hole is wimpy in comparison, weighing only as much as 4 million suns.)

All that crashing, smashing and swirling around Centaurus A sparks intense star formation, making it one of the most spectacular objects in the sky - particularly when it comes to radio and X-ray emissions.

The latest image from the European Southern Observatory combines a true-color background view from the Wide Field Imager on the ESO's 2.2-meter telescope at La Silla in Chile with an X-ray view (in blue) from the Chandra X-ray Observatory and the radio view from the Large APEX Bolometer Camera. That camera, also known as LABOCA, is mounted on the international APEX submillimeter-wave radio telescope in Chile.

LABOCA's submillimeter view plainly shows the heat glow from the galaxy's dusty main disk and the bright radio emission from the galaxy's center. It also shows the radio emissions from jets of accelerated particles shooting north and south from the center.

As detailed in an image advisory issued Wednesday, such emissions occur when fast-moving electrons spiral around the lines of a magnetic field. The electrons emanating from Centaurus A are traveling at half the speed of light, and then slamming into the surrounding gas to create a shock wave. That's what's causing the bluish X-ray emissions that are most prominent in the lobe the lower right of the galaxy.

This artist's conception of a galactic black hole is
similar to the ESO's picture of the real thing.

Those jets and lobes are the coolest features of the image, and they don't always show up in pictures of Centaurus A. (Here's an example). LABOCA's sensitivity to submillimeter wavelengths is well-suited for charting the radio emissions from the outflow. That's one of the subjects covered in a research paper published by the journal Astronomy and Astrophysics.

The team behind the LABOCA observations was led by Axel Weiss of Germany's Max Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy. Other members of the Max Planck team include Attila Kovacs, Rolf Güsten, Karl M. Menten, Frederic Schuller, Giorgio Siringo and Ernst Kreysa.

We've had a veritable banquet of black hole tales over the past month - so take advantage of this all-you-can-eat smorgasbord:

Superimpose one of Gerard O'Neills space station designs...the ones with a central cylinder, spokes, and revolving 'wheel'...tip it just right, and it's just like the image seen.
Maybe the whole 'galaxy' is actually a spacefaring vehicle from some distant...way distant...realm.
O'Neill was pretty far out there.
Maybe he saw one in his dream/travels and never realized he was copying an existing...obviously functional vessel.
do...do...doo...do
It really does resemble the concept stations from O'Neill's visions...squint if ya hafta...
Black Holes are super impressive and I enjoy reading great articles like this about them.  Thanks Alan!  I can't wait for new black hole data to come out.

To me, it looks like there is a lot of light escaping the hole. It actually looks like the "black" hole IS the source of the light. Why do black holes appear so bright, Alan?

[ALAN ADDS: It's the energy from the stuff being torn apart as it circles the black hole itself. The jets of accelerated particles are directed up and down along the poles by the magnetic field surrounding the black hole. So the photons that are inside the black hole's event horizon can't make it out, but the photons given off by the jets outside the black hole are what's behind the strong emissions.]

I always thought that a black holes gravity was so stong nothing could escape it. Yet, "The electrons emanating from Centaurus A are traveling at half the speed of light".  I am missing something, what is it?
Impressive pictures.

[ALAN ADDS: Yes, I should have been a little more precise. The electrons are being accelerated by the magnetic field *around* the black hole. They're not actually escaping the black hole itself, they're emanating from the region surrounding the black hole as other material is falling past the event horizon.]

I have often noticed that stellar powerhouses that have high mass and rotational aspects to them are stiking similar in appearance and 'function' as that of a Nikola Tesla disc engine / pump. Given the enormous power that is evident in nature for these 'constructs', are we missing something by not intensely investigationg Tesla's insights? Nature is pointing the way in an obvious manner to so many things - shouldn't we be looking closer and with open and fresh perspectives?
Hello, I have a question about the dipole anisotropy observed in the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB). I understand a V/C frequency shift (Doppler) caused by the motion of our earth and solar system with respect to other sources of radiation, including the CMB. What causes the "V/C" apparent temperature shift?

Thanks, Bob

[ALAN ADDS: Sorry, Bob, I think this is a little out of my depth ... but if there is anisotropy in the temperature readings, I suppose it would be because the wavelengths for the thermal infrared wavelengths are being redshifted or blueshifted along with the microwaves. What I'm not sure of is whether you can perceive a Doppler effect in that way with respect to the cosmic microwave background. Maybe clearer heads than mine can add some informed perspective rather than my jibber-jabber.]
Oh me gosh, that is the finest representation of the reality of a black hole at the center of a galaxy that must be available. It fits so well and exact with theoretical views.
oh my god i never seen anything like this
Sorry, this might not be the place for it, but I have to ask.
If nothing can escape a black hole, not even light, then why do scientist think gravity waves will escape unless they already know that gravity waves travel faster than light?
Fantastic article. My inner nerd is quite pleased.
this is what happens when democrats and republicans collide.
A spaceship with a magnetic shield could magnetically funnel and trap antimatter , potentially storing huge amounts of energy from such natural phenomena.

I keep reading about the big bang and the expanding universe.  [...] I always thought that anything had to be inside of something else.  So I would like to know what the universe is inside of.

[ALAN ADDS: Great question ... here's an answer from physicists Michio Kaku:]

This is exactally why i love astronomy and astrophysics. the oppertunity to witness and study something as extraordinary and breathtaking as this!!
I can only hope to aspire to this level of greatness in my life time.
this is awesome and it so looks like an explosion. cooooooooollllllll!!!!!!!!!!
We don't know factuly. God -possibility.Money to be spent? On this ? You all can answer is expensive. Hope for best discoveries and uses.
um how about scientist findout whats on the other side of this black hole,im slightly curious could be a whole new galaxy
This picture is great, its another piece of information during the information age, now my question is " what happens to the Earth & the other planets when we pay through the galactic plan in 2012? The closest point the earth will ever be to the massive black hole in in solar system.

I heard that we could have a near miss of an asteroid in 2023? Is that true how will that affect the earth etc. Thanks
Harvey

[ALAN ADDS: Hi, Harvey, from time to time I've written about the asteroid Apophis (which is due to approach Earth in 2029 and just might be in a position for collision in 2037, but probably not). Here's a story I did a couple of years ago.]

http://cosmiclog.msnbc.msn.com/archive/2007/02/16/58617.aspx

[The risk of collision is still judged at around 1 in 43,000, but that's likely to go down once more observations are made. Another asteroid, known as 2007 VK184, is thought to have a 1-in-3000 chance of hitting Earth sometime after 2048. This page lays it all out for you:]

Science of this nature is quite possible,God- religion quite possible ,the financial cost is high and hope for discoveries that are useful and  practical. But today are economy is not bountyful, and studies go accoring to the budget and economy and what there is a need for. Others may argue that this is a waste ,it can go both ways.
these images reflct in thought the real perspective of the incredible power of the black hole yet reveale no inturpatation of begining or end
I am glad I saw this.  I do not really know alot about these.
Not colliding Democrats and Republicans... Colliding ULL (Ultra Left Liberals) and URBTC (Ultra Righ Bible Thumping Conservatives) doing something I am not sure what though.
this is awesome i didnt even know that could happen
we're all ganna die!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
omg.
:(
Is so amazing! How life out of earth could be. This activities that is happening in are galaxy, are the best thing ever! I love, the impact, color, and view of the black hole. :)( WOW )
I Love That Stuff Space,Astronomy,Astrophysics..etc...

I thought it was well established that only electric currents forms magnetic fields.  But there is no mention of electric currents at all in the discussion.

Why is that?

[ALAN ADDS: In the post I do refer to electrons being accelerated in the jets blowing away from the black hole, so I suppose you could consider that an electrical current. Here's more about the role that magnetic fields play in black holes:]

http://www.space.com/scienceastronomy/060621_bhole_magnetic.html

Terrifying yet fascinating.
When I see things like this, I can not help but believe in The Greatness of God!

[ALAN ADDS: I think that's a great sentiment! Often, when people post such comments on this blog, they get responses criticizing religious thinking. I'd like to lower the temperature on that. You're welcome to give praise to the Flying Spaghetti Monster or talk about how this reveals the beauty of plain old nature sans the supernatural ... or how the emission pattern just happens to conforms to our hard-wired circuitry for defining "beauty." But I'd like to get away from a believer-vs.-skeptic debate every time someone invokes a deity.]
We also may be observing the results of a phenomena I postulated several years ago, a hyper-massive black hole, one whose collective center of mass may be asymmetric or unbalanced.
Oh my gosh this something to think about, are we near the end? or what. so much energy either escaping or sucking make you think that is something really big is happening there.
I thought nothing can escape a black hole??? If so, then there's maybe an eye like the center of a hurricane. How big do black holes get before this phenomenon happens? Can they explode? Interesting...

How can you tell the radio emissions from jets of accelerated particles are shooting north and south from the center?  How is the north and south on a black hole determined?

[ALAN ADDS: For a galaxy I suppose it's a bit arbitrary ... you'd look at the orientation of the object in the sky and translate it to celestial north (pointing toward Polaris, for example) and south, translated to whichever celestial pole is closer.]

Alan,
Thank you for the link, but it too fails to mention that electrical current is the only known causation of magnetic fields.  I understand this has been repeatedly shown by experiment and is constrained by Maxwell's Equations.

Electric currents cause magnetic fields is the important physical law, not the other way round, as your reference suggests.

So, I'm left perplexed that a specific mention of electric currents wasn't made when referring to the magnetic fields of the jets in this image.

Thanks, again.
we are goning to die if it gets bigger yall know
I read an article from some High School Kid in Florence Alabama, about his Moth theory that has everyone amazed and confused.  Can anyone shed any light on this mind warping paper
[ALAN ADDS: Great question ... here's an answer from physicists Michio Kaku:]
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/3077398/
===========================================

Michio Kaku's explanation is not revealing and very inadequate based on the intellegence level of Americans.  In fact there was never a big bang because the evidence is again using the size of an expanding wave too large using the Earth's point of view as a focal point.  This assumes there was a 3-dimensional bang, when in fact Kaku is referring to the reflection of the 4th dimension.  This contradicts his answer.
Wow!!!!Just too beautiful I love it, do you think this is how it all begain? Please tell me is this how life started? I just have to say God could only do this, he knows how to create beauty. I am so thankful to see his work in progress. Thanks you blessed smart people for sharing.
"North" and "south" are arbitrary, but I think the convention is to apply the "right-hand rule."  Curl the fingers of your right hand in the direction the object is rotating.  Your thumb points to north.

Now, here's the really interesting question:  How is 0 degrees longitude determined?
Not to beat a dead horse, but I agree with Luella Stelck...the arbtrariness Alan mentions has always bothered me...the biggest problem in sharing this info is now, and has always been, the language.
North/South, in/out, up/down...not to mention the 'time' factor...none of these things even exist outside the mind of man...
Physics cannot explain what we do not first understand...no matter how hard one tries...unless one uses vernacular to try clarifying...ie North/South...the language does not translate into conversational layman's terms.
It's truly amazing, though...great try, Alan.
Don'tcha think?
OMG that picture is so cool its like mental in some way like somthimg just died... but for the better good its awsome!!!
wowwwwwwww,.
can we die though ?
This is so awesome................
Please keep them comming.
wow!
this is really stunning!
this makes me think, and lots of questions run through my mind!
:D
Super massive objects that are light years across truly never "explode" do they? That would mean the particles in the explosion would travel faster than the speed of light.  Wouldn't you say that they are "expanding" instead of "exploding?"
WOW!!! This is a very fascinating article it makes me want to learn more about the galaxy.
If this light show takes 13 million light years to reach us, is the sucking and spewing phenomena around this black hole still going on today or have things settled down by now? --- Uhh!!!
How great is consciousness!!!
What tiny specks and sparks of energetic protoplasm We are!!!
The mystery is very Great!!!
The Black Hole really is very Cool i mean its like a portal to a whole 'nother world out there some where thats what i think.
WOW! Those are come amazing pic.s So that ons pitcure had peices of real equipment sent out into space? That is so amazing!
