Inauguration jolts Internet

Posted: Tuesday, January 20, 2009 6:43 PM by Alan Boyle

Amanda Raflo watches the inauguration of President Obama on her laptop while
studying at a coffee shop in Charlotte, N.C., on Tuesday.

President Obama's inauguration sparked significant traffic jams - not only on Washington's streets but in cyberspace as well, according to Web performance monitors. They reported slowdowns at the Web sites run by the White House and the U.S. Senate as well as at several online news outlets.

The fact that the raw numbers of Web users didn't rise to the levels seen on Election Night suggests the problem wasn't the number of people who were online, but the amount of bandwidth each of those people was using.

"It's safe to say that streaming video was a significant contributor to these slowdowns," said Shawn White, director of external operations at Keynote Systems Inc. Another likely factor is the rapid rise of bandwidth-heavy sharing sites such as Flickr and YouTube, he said.

Keynote Systems is a California-based company that focuses on measuring and testing performance on the Internet and mobile networks. Service providers knew weeks ago that Washington's wireless networks were going to be stressed today, but it turns out that a lot of Web servers far from the scene of the action were as well.

White listed eight online news sites where the response times were significantly slower than normal: ABC News, CBS News, Fox Business, the Los Angeles Times, msnbc.com, NPR, USA Today and The Wall Street Journal.

"Only NPR actually experienced an outage," he told me. On another front, The Associated Press reported that CNN had to put some viewers on a "wait list" for a while before they could watch the inauguration.

The Bush-Obama transition affected the White House Web site, where pages took twice as long to load in the 10 a.m.-to-noon ET time frame, and up to 16 times longer at 11:30 a.m., White said. Response times snapped back to normal at 12:07 p.m., once the Obama administration officially took charge.

The Senate Web site was 60 percent slower than usual today - and 63 percent of the time, attempts to connect didn't go through at all, according to the Keynote figures. Even Keynote's Business Top 40 sites were affected. "What we saw was a sharp slowdown in performance from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.," White said.

"Obviously the Internet is resilient, and it can handle these events, but it might take longer to do what you want to do," he said.

Keynote can't keep track of how many visitors are clicking into particular Web sites, or what they're doing once they get there. The company's monitoring software can only determine how Web sites are coping with the traffic. But White speculated that the sharp and sudden slowdown could be traced, at least in part, to the "multiple gigabytes of video traffic running on the Internet."

That view was reinforced by figures from Akamai, a Massachusetts-based company that provides streaming-media services for a long list of Web sites, including msnbc.com. In a news release, the company said today marked its biggest day ever for live streaming video.

The peak of more than 7 million active simultaneous streams came at 12:15 p.m. ET, just as Obama was launching into his inaugural address. That figure compares with an average of 1.3 million for the previous 24 hours. Check out Akamai's real-time visualization to see what the current figures are.

"In addition to the historic nature of the inauguration, it is now clear that this event has driven unprecedented demand from an global online audience," Robert Hughes, Akamai's executive vice president of global sales, services and marketing, said in the news release.

Akamai also maintains an index showing the number of Internet users clicking into online news sites, and today's figures showed a significant spike of 5.4 million users per minute at 11:45 a.m. ET. However, that peak ranks just No. 5 on Akamai's all-time list, just below the first day of the NCAA's "March Madness" basketball tournament in 2006.

So what's No. 1? Election Night 2008, when the traffic reached nearly 8.6 million users per minute at 11 p.m. ET.

Of course, the inauguration is a different kind of event. Back in November, Internet users were most likely looking for quick updates on the voting results. Today, they were more in the mood to watch the grand event as it happened, with all the bells and whistles. And because it happened during workday hours, when more people have access to fast connections at the office, that would encourage viewers to become bandwidth hogs.

Video wasn't the only big draw of the day: Traffic also spiked at social networking sites such as Facebook (where users can keep their friends posted on what they're up to) and Twitter (where 140-character "tweets" can be traded among friends). Obama took advantage of such sites during his campaign, so it's only natural that they were in high gear today.

Twitter co-founder Biz Stone told me that today's tweets-per-minute peaked at a level five times higher than the week-ago average (as shown on this chart). Despite the increased traffic, there were few reports of glitches. Even TwitPic, a Web site that lets Twitter users swap photos, was able to handle the increased load.

"TwitPic made it through the inauguration great, don't think we even experienced any slowness either," the site's creator, Noah Everett, told me in an e-mail. "We upgraded some of our hardware this weekend to handle the traffic."

But before anyone gets overly impressed with today's traffic spikes, consider this claim, advanced by Silicon Alley Insider: Not even Obama's inauguration was as popular as the Puppy Cam.

All the media reports I have read only mention the chief justice Roberts as messing up the placement of the word "faithfully" in the oath of office. But they fail to mention he also messed up the word "of" using the word "to" in the statement " --office of president OF the united..."

not "..office of president TO the united. .."

It's really an uneasy moment.
THAT INAUGURATION PARTY PUT GLOBAL WARMING IN ITS PLACE WITH ITS 179 MILLION DOLLAR TAG. I AM SORRY THAT I VOTED FOR HIM ALREADY.
Electing Obama was more to do with race than electing a president everyone knows that. Strange that the media has visions of a black president in the years running up to the momentous occasion. Why do people think he the sooo right guy he's not, the stock markets don't think so but they may be wrong. There's no inspiration, no confidence, no change, no anything, he is just symbolic and a campus media symbol at that.
In the new day of age, what we need to do is hope that all is well and that we DO not have to face what we faced in 2001. All American people should always be on alert. I support that Americans can carry and own guns. Guns are not the problem, it is the people that  are not trained and or was not brought up around guns and DO NOT have the knowledge and experience that is needed to handle the guns. My husband and I are NRA members and we both uphold the constitution that we should have the right to bear arms. For our New President my opinion is ( and we know that all opinions are like *ssholes) we all have one; is that we WILL SEE!!!!!!
Most of those writting in defending Barack Hussen Obama must think they are smarter then the wall street experts who reported that indeed It was one of if not the largest one day drops that occured  in the stock market following an election of a new president.  It is also well known by experts that the stock market almost always goes down when a Democrate is elected becasue they always say what the people want to hear (more money for the poor and promise to lower taxes on
the middle class) and do something else Lie and raise taxes)  this is why businesses and stocks go down because they are smart enough to know what it will do to the economy.  Bushes tax reduction plan did work but was liimited by the Dumocrates who approved about a fourth of what he asked for.  Now 8 years later Hussen Obama is trying to do the smae thing but the Democrates think the same Idea is a good thing now. Problem is if they had supported the president to do what was good for the country and not worry about Republican or Dumocrate politics we would be in better shape economically already.  Now Obama is going to have to tackle a problem that is much worse because of Democratic stalling. And try to do the smae thing Bush wanted to do much earlier when it would have been much more effective!  If people were honest with themselves they would see this!  Problem is you always have some Democrate trying to brain wash folks instead of telling the truth.  Even on this little web Page.  I have noticed that even on Tv when Democrates can not support their position with facts they think a big mouth and talking loud and being rude makes them right and some how proves their point!  Americans need to wise up. You guys keep wasting your time. See ya
Gosh,  Let me think.  Everyday, I am determined to be patient, and threat people the way they want to be treated not as I want to be treated. We might not want to clean house today but believe me it will be cleaned because we all love a clean house.  Have we all paid off our credit card bills or are we waiting for Pres. Obama to do it for us?  That's right. Get up and let's all do our part then we can join the conversation.
"Go ahead, CLING TO YOUR GUNS AND YOUR IGNORANCE. You are alone, the world has moved on and to us, belongs the future. (And by us, I mean all sane, progressive, thoughtful, independant, patriotic, enlighted, global, positive, thinking, intelligent, respectful, and educated people of the world)."

Basically, you're saying were an obstreperous. I don't think so. I sense something very wrong with this entire situation. News stations were counting official votes at about one onehudred for Obama and one hundred thousand or more for McCain. They'd keep the votes for Obama once it hit 100 or even change to him from McCain at random times, but never to McCain. Obama recited the oath incorrectly. True, he was being polite, but I have a feeling that there's another reason John said it wrong. Oh, and his plan to 'save' our 'economy' involves lowering taxes while somehow pulling more money from our pockets? What's that mean? More taxes? What next? Taxes on blowing your nose, breathing air and existing? Gee, whoopie-stinken'-do! I'm sure happy I live in America, now I get to pay even more taxes! I love being poor! WHOO! Look! In a few years, nobody'll be poor cuz we don't have money, but Obama does! That's like, so totally fair! Ha, NO. Some of us put blood sweat and tears into our money and I doubt anyone's going to stand any more taxes for long. I understand if you think 'sharing' will get us out of this mess, but when we started 'sharing' *cough*wasting*cough* our money with other countries that don't need our help, we got a huge debt. They got themselves into poverty, well TOUGH. Does a strong, powerful lion let a starving lion feed off of him because he's hungry? Um, no. Not really. While that'd be nice and all and make a great special for Animal Planet, I'm sorry but life doesn't work that way. Nature has no pity for the weak, evolution killed off the weaker traits and made us what we are so why are we dragging our selves down? Were spending one billion dollars every eight hours and fourty minutes and if you think for even a second that giving Obama all your money will help you're so wrong it's not even worth discussing. Oh, and let's not forget that Obama wants to take away our weapons, disband the entire U.S. Army and open borders to Iraq. IRAQ! The place that's, ya know, trying to BLOW US UP? Am I the only one who thinks that we just got sucker punched by a huge terrorist organization? Surely there must be someone else here who also see this as shady, or at the very least a little strange. If this is all one very strange coincidence, fine, so be it, I'm wrong, Obama's a good president, but I feel something very bad's going to happen soon, on the level of 9/11. We didn't think terrorists would stoop to that level and they did, so what makes it impossible for one to be our president? It's like a cute little girl getting cancer. Yes, it's possible, no, we don't like it or expect it, but either way the procedure is the same to get rid of it and we can't just ignore it or very bad things happen. Can we at least get a background check on this guy? Why'd he burn his birth records before running and change religion? When he gets our money, where's he going to send it? When he has our weapons, what's he going to use them for? Why does he want to disband the Army? Because they're "mean"? Either we picked one very stupid person as our new leader, a genius terrorist mind, or he just got very, very lucky. If this is posted, there's going to be so much lag it rivals the videos, but honestly I think it'd be worth it. Feel free to remove the 'no flaming' rule, I'm ready for 4/5 of every post to somehow flame me and I believe everything here will defeat those people. Have fun.
Obama did not flub the oath of office. It was the Supreme Court Chief Justice who blew it! Obama was trying to say it according to the Constitution. Get over it you guys. The people have taken over again, in the spirit of our founding fathers.
I Pledge to help OUR President CHANGE America, and ultimately, change the world.
He will do great, he has surrounded himself with great people. If anything these next for years should be interesting (that's probably an understatement)
congrats america! you can now reap the benefits you kennedy sowed! x
Stock Market, American Economy, War in Iraq, National Security, Educational Systems, Bank Failures, etc, etc, etc.. all of these issues and the problems they present are not the "President's" problem... they are " America's" problem. Don't get it twisted...

Hopefully we Americans see ourselves as ordinary people who can and will do "extra" ordinary things...This is the true sign of "Greatness"

Our President realizes this and has asked for our help... so let's get to work..We don't have a minute to waste...

I think it's funny how Mr. "Fed up with you half-wits" uses the word "patriotic", which implys supporting one's home country, and then "global" in the same sentence. I am the only one who sees the irony in that?

That said, I also think it's funny how most comments attacking conservative views and praising President Obama (God bless him, no matter what he believes) will fall upon deaf ears, seeing as how there aren't many conservatives posting here. I don't really care about the goverment, seeing as how lopsided our voting system is. I laugh every time I hear someone say go make your vote count!

But about the actual blog, I can see the Internet going down because of people watching the Inauguration, seeing as how not only US citizens were watching, but the rest of the world too.
King Hussein - The Messiah   Is it 01/20/2013 yet?
And you Illinois, in the land of the USA, are not the least among the states of the USA: for out of you shall come a President, that shall rule my people in America.

For to us a president is inaugurated, to us a son is given: and the government shall be on his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, The mighty Economist, The everlasting Progressive, The Prince of Bipartisanship.
Joe King or Joe the plummer, what's the difference?

Both are such great citizens, supportive of improving and moving forward of our great nation - NOT!

Listen folks, we are in this together, can't we look to the future and HOPE for the best with this new president.  Bless us all!

Did anyone think ahead to see that off shoring our U.S. jobs would so quickly bring down the economy ?  This has been undoing our , as a nation , ability to pay for the basics as food , clothing and shelter .  Why has our government given tax breaks to those whom move jobs over seas ?  The business that have done that are are only looking for very short term gaines and NOT in the best lonf term interest of the American people . We as a people must as watch out for "keeping up with the Jones" !!!  Can you ever ... ?
Let me get this straight. W screws the country for 8 years. Turned the US around from a growing economy & growing jobs to moving those real jobs overseas, significantly dropping most people's real income degraded their medical benefits, and trashed their retirement by robbing their 401 Ks & the SSN for his buddies, destroyed the U.S, credibility overseas, put the US in more debt than ever, assaulted our Constitutional Rights,...and, some how it's all the fault of the Guy who took office just a couple of days ago? [...]
Oh come on guys, the man is not a god, he is not perfect. He is just that, a man- just like any other... And should be treated with respect just like any other. Give him a chance, simply that is due to him.and afterwards, IF he screws up only then can you RESPECTFULLY disagree with what he has done. Think before you talk, it will save you all a great deal of embarrassment.
Thanks God about wonder sent Bush to Dumbai. I am happy about that Obama help economy goes up to get better and save lives.
Hold your horses. Give the new President a chance. Hes on been there three days, not enought time to change his shorts, I mean his jacket.Lets just pray that he and God are hand and hand. For the President, our nation and its people.Lets be one to the world, and get behind our leader. OK
Childish bickering, instead we may want to find way to create a business, read history, learn how to think and use reason, stop the trivial conversation and have a suggestion on how you can help the economy.
Blogging gossips does not help anyone.
Everytime I read this comments I feel sorry for some of you.
