Power transfer on the Web

Posted: Tuesday, January 20, 2009 3:50 PM by Alan Boyle

Whitehouse.gov
The White House Web site gets a makeover.

Even before President Obama took the public oath of office, power quietly switched over from the Bush administration at the stroke of noon, as called for in the Constitution. And so it was on the Web: The Bush White House's Web site disappeared into the ether, replaced by an online portal jazzed up with blog posts, slideshows and front-page video.

All those bytes could contain crucial bits of information chronicling the past eight years. Fortunately, they aren't totally lost. If the only other online presidential transition is any guide, the vanished content will eventually resurface on the HTML-coded pages of Web history.

The new Whitehouse.gov was introduced in a blog posting at 12:01 p.m. today by Macon Phillips, director of new media, who noted that the Web site was "one of the first changes" introduced by the administration. Phillips came over to the White House from Blue State Digital, which designed a whole constellation of Web sites for the Obama team.

Phillips promised that more goodies would be posted online as Inauguration Day wore on, including video of Obama's inaugural address and slideshows from the festivities. (This First Read blog post shows off a bit more of the site.)

Meanwhile, search engines were still pointing to the Bush administration's pages, but efforts to see live content from the old days (as in, um, yesterday) were greeted by "Page Not Found" messages. That's the way it was during the Clinton-Bush transition as well: One day you could hear Socks the Cat meow, and the next day you had to be content with Spotty the Spaniel.

Some of the frills from the Bush Web site, such as biographies of the First Ladies, have been ported over to the Obama Web site with little change. (And speaking of change, the new Whitehouse.gov picks up some of the elements from Change.gov, the ground-breaking Web site created for the presidential transition.)

If you're hoping to drill down into the Bush administration's old Web pages, you'll have to sort through the cached versions preserved by search engines or the Internet Archive, at least for the time being. That situation will almost certainly change, however: The Web legacy is just too valuable to let lapse.

The model for old presidential Web sites was set eight years ago, during the Clinton-Bush transition: Today, several versions of the Clinton-era White House Web site have been preserved, thanks to the Clinton Presidential Library and the National Archives. (Check out, for example, this 2000 White House talk by famed physicist Stephen Hawking.)

The same routine will no doubt be made available to now-former President George W. Bush and Web historians. Tributes to the late, lamented Spotty the Spaniel - like all the now-dead speeches, photos and press releases from the Bush administration - will live again online.

Correction for 7:43 p.m. ET: In the original version of this post, I said that Change.gov was fading away. But as a sharp-eyed reader points out below, content from the transition Web site can still be found by clicking on the small link on the lower right of the Change.gov home page. I've revised this item to correct my oversight.

I think you are reporting on and helping to create the future here, Alan.
Right now, it's a nice, factual, insightful story about a topic of the day.
By the next election, it'll be part of the standard text...nice job!
The Change.gov website still has everything it used to have, you just have to click "continue on to change.gov" at the bottom right.
Please Mr. President, us your security to the fullest. I want you to make it 2 full terms.

Sincerly

Ed
Interesting - if you click on "contact us" on the bottom of the home page, it takes you to one of the old pages listing, among other things, Dick Cheney's e-mail address and a masthead that still cites "President George W. Bush". Guess they haven't gotten around to replacing all the pages yet.
The Internet and the associated technology used with web browsing has revolutionized the communication of Americans and the entire world.  We can thank DARPA for initially begining the internet for research purposes.
Today, in America, President Obama is making HISTORY because Change has finally came to America.  No longer is it the rich white families trying to tell American's what to do, think, act.  Every American can look at OUR President, and for the first time in history--we every Ameriecan--are related to the Obama's!

We could not say that about George W. Bush's America. Enjoy your retirement, Mr. Bush, and the money that you stole from the American people.
When I graduated in 1953, there were no jobs.  The Korean war was going on.  I volentered for the draft, because I didn't want go into the army for 3 years.  When I left the army I went to school under the G I Bill. 20 years, I was a printer, and 20 years I spent working for the railroad. Today was my first visit to the White House!  Well online.  I loved it.  Well done.  I learned so much and walked my children through the site and will continue to learn and explore more of it in the future as I become a more responsible citizen of The United States Of America.  My favorite page was on the Agenda/Women.  Congratulations President Obama and to the First Lady.  Thank you and welcome to your new office.  CARPE DIEM!
What a beautiful day for all Americans and the World.
We are a melting pot for all the world. The world is watching us so lets rejoice and take each others hand and stand behind our 44th President.  What a great receipe for the world to follow!
" ... the vanished content will eventually resurface on the HTML-coded pages of Web history. ..."

Why?

George
That's the power of the Net. Old things have indeed passed away and CHANGE has come. No doubts about it, things are surely going to CHANGE with Obama as the president. I sure hope Obama delivers beyond just promises. Something tells me he will.
it is are time to do what we know to be right in the eyes of god it him who put him in office to say to the world that it is time put selfish ways down and help our follow man and all who are last fortunate help are youth and help are we as the people of the usa must show the world that we sppourt are President
Please Mr. President, I have been Unemployed since July '08, we need Jobs yesterday, not tomorrow, thank you.
It's a new era. One that will surely lead to lots of change for not only American people but democratic loving people all over the world.
If you think Bush was bad, then the return of the liberal OBAMA/CLINTON White House will be worse.  Special rights for some, reduction of rights for the majority.
@Jacob:

Poor Republican - we feel your pain
Why are so many people wasting their time? Change will come? My azz!!!

We'll talk again when Obama goes and some other president is elected. What's the hype for? I honestly dn't get it!!!
Obama is not my president. He can not be president because he was not born in the united states.Obama was born in a hospital 8000 miled from the united states. It has been said that he was
born in the British Isles. To get where he is is because of the press. You tell me how in the hell can Obama run this country. He was up in washington three years of his senate turn.He even has said that he never got into washington but he knew it needed a change. Now how in the hell would he know that.he wasn't in washington long enough to cast a vote.In fact he missed voting onmost what was going on in washington.
You can't have it both ways.  This is for those people who cheer for President Obama and then at the same time boo President Bush as he leaves Office.  Thats disrepectful to our nations highest office.  Write or wrong we need to applaud the sacrafice both these men have and will make to our nation. If thats the majority President Obama represets, we're in big trouble. Change will only come from "us" not the President.
President Bush didn't steal from the American people, just wait until the next four years are over and you too will see.
I think that the bushwhacker era websites ought to be junked since there is no intelligent info on them.  Obama's new website will be so superior to the bushwhacker's, just like everything he'll do will be better than his foolish predecessor.

I am so looking forward to real science coming back to the White House, along with honesty and integrity.
I love the fact that everyone is a political expert now.  I hope everyone realizes that the same people that have run the country for that years previous are still there.  The president still has to go through the crooked house and senate to get his bills past.
We have started down a new road, regardless of our views of the new president. his election is has started the country down a new road. a black man has reached the highest elected office in the land. that is powerful. what ever else happens is in our ability to inform our senators and representatives what we want them to do. Change will only come if we voice what we believe to be right for the country.  and one bit of a personal nature, leave the second amendment alone.
24 hours have passed since the "oath" - lets see what the over-rated obama will change first!!!  I think he should consider changing his spending habits.  The Inauguation cost the tax payers $150 million.  That would have fed alot of people in the United States.
I couldn't be more thrilled to have Obama in office!  He's going to change everything!  For too long now we've had a country run by an elected dictator with absolutely no respect for the rule of law or human rights!  Obama has the ability to bring Muslim and Christian together in the Middle East, fix the energy crisis, create jobs, cure the economy, and bring love and respect back for our country. I'm in tears I'm so happy!  Finally, safety and economic security for all!  It's a new age; it's about time!
"Obama is not my president. He can not be president because he was not born in the united states.Obama was born in a hospital 8000 miled from the united states. It has been said that he was born in the British Isles."

It is ignorant repeated mis-information like this that shows how people will believe and pass on, what they read without checking the facts. Our President was born in the US. In a state called Hawaii. And yes it was a state when he was born there. Please check your facts before speaking.
I need a job too.  I've been out of work since last May.  WPA type jobs just aren't going to do it. I'm 64 and I'm not going to dig ditches in my old age. How about closing the borders to jobs going overseas and penalizing all the companies that have outsourced jobs to India, China, etc. Thanks to Clinton and the Democrats, there are no jobs left in the the US.
We now have a Clinton administration again.  All of the Clinton employees are back.  It may be Obama in the White House but it's still a Clinton type show. We just can't get rid of the Clintons.  They are like a bad smell that doesn't go away.
Speaking of shows, the Hollywood type production of the inauguration was awful and a shame for the country in a recession.  All that money for someone to be sworn in. That money could have been better spent helping those of us that are out of jobs find jobs.
All of the hoopla, big deal that it was a black man.  He is still a human being and it doesn't matter what color he is there was no reason to spend $150 million dollars on a show
President Obama has a monumental task to unravvel the huge mess our country is in.  Regardless of past views or present uncertanties, it's time that ALL Americans help one another and rally behind our newly elected leader.  CHANGE can only come when we band together as ONE.
I am so disappointed that we elected this man mostly because of the guilt some people feel about the past (which was a despicable past), and for some only because the color of his skin is like theirs. And by the way...he is bi-racial...not black. I don't believe I have heard one person yet call him bi-racial. The only change I see coming is change for the worse. I am not optimistic about the future of our country. But, I hope and pray I am wrong. Only the future will tell us. God bless and protect the USA and our new president.
For everyone, who used this sight to air your negativity and ignorance, there are other places to do so. For those of you who claim that President Obama is not your President, pack it up and leave our country! Someone is complaining about price of the inauguration. These ceremonies cost money and are important to the traditions in our country. It is a shame that there are those who mistrust the Democrats. We have always flourished under democratic rule. As a democrat, I thank God there are people who believe in the dignity of human value. To believe in helping our our neighbors.

I am PROUD to live in a country where we have risen above the shameful racist behaviors of our past and that any one can be anything they want.

Michelle Obama will be a fine first lady and Barack Obama will be a fine President. I made the comment, when the Bidens and Obamas were on stage together that it was what America really looks like. Think about it.

As our President has said numerous times, "God Bless the United States of America." Not just America, but a united one.
The new Whitehouse.gov site is inclusionary even in the design with that delicate detail of the rotunda dental displaying at the top. Kudos to the design team for using images at a larger size.
obama will NEVER be my president.  He is a fake and full of hot air and BS.  Nothing he has promised during his campaign will be achieved.  This fake that the racist blacks, along with people suffering from white guilt is an insult to all Veterans(USAF 1966-1970).  To think that obama was elected over a national HERO like John McCain is totally insane. [...]
150Million have been spent.
2Million have been there, all of them needed food, a place for the night, water, electricity and all of them bought stuff on the streets.

If everybody spent $75 in that days of the inaugoration, the 150 million where worth it, because the businesses are the ones who need money, and they got it through that.

And if somebody complains about where President Obama was born, that somebody sould look up the place that john mccain was born at: Coco Solo, Panama (which is less American than Hawaii because Hawaii is a state and Coco Solo was a military base.)
$150 million - yet another ignorant waste of taxpayer dollars!  Maybe if Obama was a true democrat he would have cancelled the inauguration just as Wilson did in 1913 and stop bleeding this country dry.
