Good times in ancient times

A purple-gloved lab worker handles a clump of still-green marijuana found in the
2,700-year-old grave of a man in the Gobi Desert — part of an ancient stash.

Ancient civilizations may not have perfected frat-party technology, but the weirdest stories of the past year demonstrate that they could get just as high - and indulge in humor just as low - as your typical contemporary college crowd.

Today we rounded up the top 10 vote-getters in our Weird Science Awards competition, and the top two tales both had to do with what you might call ancient diversions: the discovery of a 2,700-year-old marijuana stash in the Gobi Desert and a 1,600-year-old Pythonesque joke from a Greek manuscript.

Both tales represent just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the diversions of ancient times. Life for the typical ancient Roman or Greek, or Egyptian or Chinese, was even nastier, more brutish and shorter than it is today - so consolations such as a stiff drink or a good laugh were widely sought after.

Take the history of marijuana use, for example: The hemp plant was thought to have been used for its psychoactive properties in ancient India and Assyria as well as China and Russia. In his book on the subject, "Cannabis: A History," Martin Booth notes that Russian archaeologists found stone-filled cauldrons that may have been used for inhaling pot smoke during burial rites in Mongolia, 2,400 years ago. This not only meshes with the more recent Gobi Desert discovery, but might also explain the modern-day meaning of the word "stoned." (Heh, heh.)

The historian Herodotus famously remarked on marijuana's use by the Scythians during funerals in the fifth century B.C. "The Scythians, transported with the vapor, shout aloud," he wrote. Some even suggest that cannabis was an ingredient in the recipe for anointing oil laid out in the Book of Exodus (a claim that others have found shockingly sacrilegious).

The Egyptians went in more for beer and wine - as we've mentioned before with relation to the pharaonic "festival of drunkenness" that was documented by Herodotus. (Man, that guy really got around!) Corn beer was the intoxicant of choice for New World cultures, such as Peru's Incan and Wari empires and the Southwest's Pueblo Indians.

To learn more ancient libations, check out this story about 9,000-year-old Chinese wine, and this one about King Tut's drinking preferences. If you haven't seen it already, don't miss our interactive gallery of gaming and guzzling through the millennia.

Finally, here are some links that will fill you in on what passed for humor in ancient times (including the Egyptian equivalent of card-playing dog paintings):

Update for 7:30 p.m. ET: Just in the past couple of days, we've published a couple of stories about ancient diversions that just might make the list for the 2010 Weird Science Awards: this one about Stonehenge as the perfect place for a trance party, and this one about a gladiator revival at Rome's Colosseum.

it should also be noted that hemp seeds have been found in Jomon culture sites of Japan ~10,000 BP
All the more reason to legalize marijuana. As history has shown it is not going away and the legalization would greatly reduce crime, reduce the prison population, free up the courts to handle other 'crimes' and should fall into the the same restrictions as alcohol. The HUGE amounts of money spent to stop the use and sale could could be spent on 'real crime'. The legal sale of pot would GREATLY reduce the profits of crime lords and gangs and stop a great amount of crime associated with its sale.  LDD
Even a large number of police feel it should be legalized. The "war" on drugs is a war you cannot win. It's like fighting the legendary hydra, cut off one head and 2 more appear. A lot of people smoke marijuana because it is illegal, the same way many drank during prohibition. Stop trying to fight this and try feeding the people and getting them affordable medical care. You might even try educating them better, wow there's a thought.
You forgot to add the tax revenue for the states if it was legally sold, in liquor stores for example.
Why aren't these people in jail?
Just because you have a job as a "purple gloved lab worker" does not excuse breaking the law.
Possession is a crime.
It is fascinating to know that the ancients used ZipLock baggies!!  I wonder. Did they find any Bick lighters?
Decriminalize Cannabis Sativa ... join NORML
Guess what America's #1 Cash Crop is? Cannabis Sativa!
Cannabis Hemp can be used as alternative fuel to ween us off of fossil fuels until true clean energy can be attained. Hemp paper can be recycled twice as many times as Tree paper and 1 acre of Hemp creates as much paper as 4 acres of trees.
go scythians!!! we totally rule dude
The United States Constitution, I have heard, was written on hemp paper. Is this true?

wake up, guy.  This is an archaelogical dig in the GOBI DESERT (where laws are not those of the US) funded by the GOVT.  Does a cop get thrown in jail for handling evidence?  Read before you post.

After reading the arguements about Cannabis references in the Bible, it seems unlikely that the references are about "MJ". That being said, Just becuase something is illegal does not make it immoral. You can qoute as many verses as you like, but until it clearly says "Thou shalt not smoke pot", there is really no valid religious argument.
The "valid religious argument" stems from the statement in the Bible that God put your leaders over you for a reason; it is God's reason, not for us to know until He sees fit to reveal it to us.  Until then, marijuana is illegal, no matter how stupid (or not) its use is.

Why is marijuana illegal, when alcohol is not?  After all, Prohibition (the 19th Amendment) didn't work.  The answer is that it is an inescapable fact that marijuana intoxication tends to occur faster than alcohol intoxication (You say it doesn't?  Then why do so many people risk jail to possess it?).  I would suggest that pot use (per se) be de-criminalized; one would only be subject to criminal penalties if one operated a vehicle under the influence (as with alcoholic beverages).
Our new anthem in Canada is Oh Cannabis! And a flag to match.
It is legal in Alaska to possess marijuana and 1 plant. You cant sell it.

actually, god doesnt choose our leaders.

god only gets one vote, just like the rest of us.

as long as the government keeps treating its citizens like retarded school children who need to be walked across the street, the citizens will continue to have no respect for the government.

pleez halp me govermunt!!  i am so stupid!!  i drink gasoline to get high!!  make a law to save me!!!  make gasoline illegal, or ill keep drinking it!!
It is only Illegal because the government said so, it was not illegal or imorral before the laws of the 40's As a disabled vet dealing with cronic pain, pot was the only thing that helped get me moving, until the V.A. made me sign a contract not to smoke any more or they would stop treating my pain. And we voted in the people that are responsible for these laws.

er....Mr. (or Ms.) Archaeologist...see if you can Dig Up the definition of "Sarcasm."  (I thought before I post.)
I knew Shamanism was the way to go! I have always wondered what marijuana from the past would be like...I am sorely disappointed that it loses it's potency.

However, as for the perpetual argument of the comparability of marijuana to alcohol... I'm one up for the pot. Deaths per year (caused by directly) pot? 0. Money spent to prevent the use of pot? Billions over this time period. Watch "Super High Me" with Doug Benson. It's like the McDonalds documentary but way more beneficial - truly "higher" learning ;D
HA, sarcasim I so got that! I guess only green lite'rs would!! Legalize HA HA They know, they dont care! No one is ever big enough to admit when they are wrong. Not in our lifetime dude sorry. Another great flik... emperor of hemp! Anyway keep the green light glowin maybe someday they will see it... ya know... the light!
proof! wether you like it or not, IT WILL BE HERE UNTIL THE END OF TIME!!! so why doesnt the goverment take it into their own hands, tax it, regulate it in a civilized manner???????? wake up obama!
maybe that's why my ancestors always got into a circle and passed the Peace Pipes, ajokes. but seriously I'm all for legalization, too many deaths caused by alcohol on the reservations of america, but i've never heard of anyone overdosing on POT
I smoked  the stuff way back in the sixtys listening to Merle Haggard singing "We dont smoke Marijuana in Muskogee" only to find out in the eighties that Merle HAD been smoking it all along along with a  lot of others. When it got where most people didnt care it lost its thrill and I havent touched it in 15 years. It seems to me that the people who dont want it legalized are probably just trying to keep the prices high because they have a fiancial interest. When it is legalized(and it will be)the bottom is going to fall out of that market. It will lose its allure, use will nosedive and everyone will see how stupid we all were for making such a big deal over a little plant.
If legalization happened, it would knock the Mex. cartels outta the box. Federally or state regulated, it would be the equivalent of ending prohibition in the 30's. Alcohol is a DRUG. Why is that legal, and cannabis is not? California's biggest cash crop is cannabis, the Mex Cartels main source of income. We are such a closed minded society. BOO-YAH!!!
didn't george washington's diary have entries about his pot plants and how well some did compared to others?  maybe....just remember hearing that back in the 70s.  or read it in high times.
It is unfortunate to realize just how ignorant people are about Pot.  I have Fibromyalgia and sometimes that is the only relief from indefinite pain.  The disease ruined my life...NOT POT!  I would rather people smoke pot then drink.  Our highways would be safer.  I have yet to meet a pot smoker that has black outs or drives dangerously.  We need to ban alcohol and legalize marijuana!  Alcohol is manufactured and marijuana is, by my definition, Natures (Gods) medicine.  To the repetitive complainer...Tell me, what is your choice of drug?  Alcohol?  I know first hand the damage booze can have on a person...I tried to kill my pain first by use of alcohol; the damage was irreversable.  Pot, no conflict.
Wow -

Who could have imagined what incredible comments could be posted in a thread about archeology.

When, and if, marijuana is legalized, I hope that a provision is included to prevent the big businesses, that would spring up, from spiking or altering the natural plant matter in the ways the Tobacco Industry has altered their products to make them more addictive.  We don't need another instance of that fiasco.  Marijuana, as it currently is used, does not have an addictive component, but you can bet if the tobacco industry starts to sell it, they will figure out a way to make its' users dependent.
Just a thought on ancient drug use; Some theologians have opined that the forbidden fruit from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil (not an apple tree, that is a misnomer) could have had psychotropic properties.  And that further, that it permanently altered the DNA.  Of course knowledge of good and evil is no longer forbidden.

Sorcery was forbidden in the Mosaic law, but the New Testament is mostly silent about such things.  The hebrew "sorcerer" is the same as the greek "pharmakeus" or pharmacist.  I suppose the use of drug should be measured by its intent.. to help or to harm.
The pharmecutical (sic) companies are the ones lobbying the hardest to keep marijuana illegal. Their sales for anti depressant, pain relief and such don't lie. The RX companies lose trillions if weed is legal. They and their share holders do not want that.
2700 year weed gotta be harsh man......
Oh, you commenters, you just slay me (but I do agree with Fred) with all these sideline chat room fluff when this is a story about the history of us.
My question is, what strain was the ancient ganja? If it was Cannabis Indica (which it probably was), then it is a safe bet to say it was used medicinally. If it was Cannabis Sativa, it was probably used more as a religious psychoactive (Indica = physical, Sativa = mental). It would be interesting to know, as it may shed light on the sociological factors behind Cannabis use.
There's a great book called "The Long Trip" that documents hemp and opium usage at palaeolithic sites.  Tools for processing and ingesting h & o are common finds --and sometimes test positive.  This might explain the many thousand-year periods when nothing particularly exciting happened.
There's a great book called "The Long Trip" that documents hemp and opium use in Palaeolithic times.  Tools for processing and ingesting h & o are often found at Stone Age sites, sometimes testing positive for residue.  This may explain those long thousand-year periods where not too much at all went on.  It was a Stone groove.
I agree with so so many of these postings! I do believe that if we did legalize it alot of polical nonsense would be presented that its no so bad! Obama do it ratical change is awesome!!!!!
Sad to say, maybe you can’t buy love, but you can buy votes (not that all politicians and legislators are for sale, but enough of them can be bought.) As long as the drug cartels and/or the pharmaceutical companies have a dime, these types of drugs will stay illegal wherever possible. If Capone and his bunch had ever learned to lobby, alcohol would still be illegal.
Referring to the mention of it in the bible Genesis chapter 1 verses 11-14 are as specific as it ever gets. "... and the earth brought forth herb bearing seed after its own kind.... and god looked upon the earth and saw that it was good..."  don't try this in church you'll be excommunicated.
