Clinton's stock falls to new low

Posted: Wednesday, May 07, 2008 4:52 PM by Alan Boyle

NBC News' Tim Russert isn't the only one selling Hillary Clinton short today: In the wake of the North Carolina and Indiana primaries, her shares on the Iowa Electronic Markets have fallen to the lowest point ever. The market lets online investors put real money down on the candidates’ prospects, as a science experiment on the "wisdom of crowds." The shares are worth $1 each if the investor's candidate wins the nomination, but they're worthless if the candidate loses.

Today, Clinton’s shares for the Democratic nomination were trading at less than 10 cents on the IEM - and the situation was pretty much the same at the InTrade prediction market.

Looking back at the charts, it turns out that the prediction markets didn’t stray all that far from the conventional wisdom, but avoided wild swings on a week-by-week basis.

For example, Clinton's win in last month's Pennsylvania primary, coupled with Barack Obama's pastor problem, might have given the impression that the momentum was swinging her way. Those reversals had little effect on the market, however. Sure, there was a slip in Obama's value and an uptick for Clinton, but nothing like the chart-crossing game-changers seen in the early phases of the primary campaign.

Even today's sharp erosion in Clinton's share price brings the level just a few cents below where it was in early March (12.6 cents) and early April (12.4 cents). She bounced back from those lows - and there's always the chance the stock could take another upturn, despite what Tim Russert says. But few investors agreed with Clinton that her narrow Indiana win represented a "tie-breaker." In fact, the market's verdict is that Tuesday's results represented enough of a setback in her political fortunes to justify dumping her stock.

Obama's stock, meanwhile is trading around historic highs: Before today, the high-water mark was 85.9 cents on March 1, and today's prices are edging above that level. If you had bought Obama shares on Jan. 9, the day after the New Hampshire primary - when I wrote the item "Buy Obama, Sell Clinton?" - you would have more than doubled your money by now.

Iowa Electronic Markets
This chart shows how shares for the Democratic candidates have done over the
past 14 months. The blue line represents the value of Hillary Clinton's shares,
yellow is for Barack Obama, green is for John Edwards, and red is for the "rest of the field." If a candidate wins the Democratic nomination, each of his or her shares
pays $1. If he or she loses, the share is worthless. Obama's stock is highest.

What does Obama's rise and Clinton's slide portend for the bigger contest ahead, against Republican John McCain? Justin Wolfers, an economist at the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School, notes in his Wall Street Journal column that the market for the November general election has been  stable - with the Democrats' shares bringing a higher price than the GOP shares, at 56 cents vs. 45 cents:

"As Sen. Clinton's chances of becoming the Democratic nominee plummeted, and Sen. Obama's soared, the chances of the ultimate Democrat candidate winning the general election remained unchanged. Taken together these two facts yield the interesting implication that perhaps there is not much difference in the electability of Sen. Obama and Sen. Clinton.

"Looking forward to November, an Obama-McCain race seems increasingly likely. And Sen. Obama is the early betting favorite."

Wolfers also delves into the intriguing fluctuations in prices during Tuesday night's long, drawn-out vote count - which leads me to wonder whether the election-night pundits should be reporting on the prediction markets while they wait for a winner to be announced.

Should we be hearing more about the prediction markets on the election-night broadcasts going forward - or would that merely prove that political reporting has turned into a kind of horse-race handicapping? Feel free to add your comments below.

This is an interesting concept. I will be interested in following the market, to include the real market, up to the November election to see the final result. Is it possible to do dollar cost averaging or just day trading?
What amazes me is that in 232 years we still haven't found a more appropriate way to determine who is the most capable individual who can successfully lead this nation, and so we must resort to a futile and divisive popularity contest, in which only a select elite few may enter. No wonder the greatest sin of the youth is apathy.
Rush Limbaugh has asked his far-rightwingnut followers to mess up the Democratic primaries by voting for the weaker Democrat, Clinton, thus forcing Obama to spend political and real capital that he would not otherwise have had to spend.  (Limbaugh calls this ploy "Operation Chaos.")  This Republican election tampering puts the kibosh on all the assumptions behind the "prediction markets" this article talks about:  were it not for the "Operation Chaos" crossover "voters," Hillary, aka Bush Lite, would have been out months ago.  It looks like these election-tampering tactics are working all too well; in a sad turn for the future of this country, McSame will win this fall thanks to the success of Limbaugh's divisive "Operation Chaos."
The question in my mind is... how many people are actually trading? It's all about sample size. If it's 10 people, then these "predictions" and "indicators" are completely bogus. But, if it's 100,000 people, then very cool. It's a good experiment with a sample size that may actually reflect the US citizens' opinions.

So, how many is it?
The subject of your article is frightening. Do you want to live in a Country where Las Vegas, the stock market and the media decides who you will vote for as president? I know this is an interesting and seemingly harmless but I can easily see it crack open a door to a room I do not want to enter.
From a futures trader's perspective the spike was the indication where it would go.
This is all BS, the media and whovever this crap is are sacrificing the country for reasons that continue to escape me, Clinton is capable and able to be a good president, Obama is not, I'm not even sure he's all that intelligent, being applauded by a bunch of lawyers is not my idea of a criteria.

[...]

You're sinking the country even lower than it is now by your BS.
This type of snarky commentary does nothing positive. Its seems like all news, whether political or poparatsi is couched in smash-mouth sports radio lingo. In my opinion this makes for ignorant discussion that leads to less understanding of the issues.
Obama/Gore '08.

Paul.
Why not re-elect President Daddy...he has a term left...let Bubbya finish the task as Sec of State...and stop pretending anyone is going to switch horses in midstream?
No matter what your political leanings...imagine if Algore has been in charge for the recent course of events.
Like it or not, US Foreign Policy is in the hands of GHWBIII, and his minions...and domestic policy is simple...wait for disasters...posture...spend...etc...
Neither Hill, nor Barack, nor even Slick Willy by proxy can deal with the Global aspects of the job.
President Daddy made it up...Bubbya killed that wicked Saddam for Daddy...and here we stand.
Get over it...Forge Ahead
even better.  They are both on www.thehumanhybrid.com .  Powerful insight into Americas future there!
It's a long time until November.

The Democrats can (literally) field a jackass, and they will get my vote.

Anybody except a Republican will do just fine!

Jon H., I checked with University of Iowa spokesman Tom Snee about the sample size. He said that about 2,500 people have signed up with the IEM. About 1,000 are involved in active trading at any one time. On Tuesday, trading was "moderate," with 8,500 contracts changing hands (one person can execute multiple contracts, but when you open an account, you are limited to a maximum amount of $500).

http://news-releases.uiowa.edu/2008/may/050708IEM.html

More than 20,000 contracts were traded on the Democratic market on the day of the Iowa caucus.

http://www.biz.uiowa.edu/news/displaystory.cfm?id=1781&printMe=y

You're not limited to day trading, so you could do dollar-cost averaging, I suppose. I'm not really familiar with how well that strategy would work, since this is a "winner-take-all" market. But there are market fluctuations, so I suppose theoretically you could use some of the same investment strategies that are used in other markets. Let me note that you should not take anything I say as "investment" advice.

Jon asks, "How many people were trading?"

Hard to say, but if you click the link on the Iowa Electronic Markets, it tells you Tuesday's trading on the Democratic Nomination Market was "light" at a volume of 8,500 contracts.
Someone wrote: "were it not for the "Operation Chaos" crossover "voters," Hillary, aka Bush Lite, would have been out months ago.  It looks like these election-tampering tactics are working all too well; in a sad turn for the future of this country, McSame will win this fall thanks to the success of Limbaugh's divisive "Operation Chaos."...

Why we continue to keep our head in the sand? If it wasn't for EXCLUSIVE black vote, mr.Obama would be nowhere. Anyone who may dare and say " No, it's not true"?

I'm for Hillary, if she's not gonna be the nominee, I will vote McCain. And no, I'm not a republican, I'm just a shocked democrat by various Rezkos, Ayers, and some unknown guy who wants to be the president!

oh, no, I forgot. He broke his ties with 20 years of his past, so the guy is fixed.
This is the coolest election coverage I've seen since the campaigns started!
damn the one stock i knew would soar wasn't on the market guess i'm still blue collar but smarter than the pundits ...i gave Obama 50 before Iowa
It is time for the democratic party to unify.

Statements from Clinton supporters that Obama can not win are incorrect, defeatist, and counterproductive. Obama has an amazing energetic campaign, a true vision for change, vast fund raising capabilities that empower small donors, intelligence, youth, eloquence, charisma, popularity with independents, a record of integrity, etc.

Likewise, I believe gloating and negative statements directed at Clinton and her supporters are not what we need.

Many of the most inflammatory comments on the internet may be either direct attempts to create divisions within the Democratic party, or may be posted by individuals who have been influenced and agitated by what is known as 'project chaos'. I find it sad that some of us believe that the use of deception to create division will benefit our nation in any way. This 'ends justify the means' tactic is destructive and unpatriotic.

Sometimes the means undermine the ends.

Clinton has the right to continue her campaign, but it is time for the democratic party to unite, and that should start with the people. In the likely event that Obama wins, Clinton should be considered as a vice presidential option. Her supporters have earned that much for her. In that position she could continue to fight for them, a promise she has made often. I encourage her supporters to reach out to her and guide her into making the right decision.

Let us do our candidates proud by coming together and restricting ourselves to well reasoned debates on real issues without distractions and flared tempers.

We can not afford four more years of GOP policy.  McCain appears to be a decent man, but he no longer seems to know who he is, and his policies will be destructive.  I believe that the American people know this.

I have a proposal:
Let us counter 'project chaos' with our own mission.  Let us take stock of our priorities and recognize the great number of issues we democrats agree upon.  We should reach out to one another and find a way to work together.  We might even consider reaching out to conservatives.  Isn't that what our candidates want?  Isn't that what is best for our nation and the world?  Isn't that the only way we will truly move forward?

We can name this new mission after the man who ultimately inspired it:  We can call it 'PROJECT LIMBAUGH'.
I am a blue collar working white man who voted for Obama yesterday in Indiana and I was not alone. We will stand behind the man in November. Hillery needs to stop all of her bull-headed nonsense and give up the fight. She is through. Mr Obama is the freshest face and the brightest collection of ideas for the future of this nation we have seen in years. Yes he will unite our races and bring this great country back into the World leadership position it deserves. Get with it Super Ds and end the division.
Uhm - does anyone else see how tragically pathetic this whole election process (and everything associated with it). Hundreds of millions of dollars have been raised and wasted on worthless campaigns which have accomplished NOTHING.

Anybody stop to think what problems hundreds of millions of dollars might help fix? And these are the people we want to lead our country?

We are so absolutely pathetic...
Obama's stock will be worthless when Sen. Clinton gets the nomination because she is the most qualified candidate for the presidency.  And if the nomination is stolen and swiped from her, then Obama's stock will be worthless in November when he crashes and burns and the Democratic Party is a train wreck - just like with radical left wing liberal George McGovern, who lost every single state except one state in the general election.

Tim Russert is corporate media that is out of control.  He is corporate media interfering in, subverting, and sabotaging the Democratic nomination process with a bias toward cult leader Obama.

The black racism in the North Carolina win cannot triumph over the nomination process. The Indiana win of a mere 9 counties by Obama out of more than 100 counties cannot triumph over the nomination process. Florida and Michigan must be counted; the remaining states must vote; and the superdelegates must use their independent judgment to select the best qualified candidate for the presidency and that is Hillary Clinton. For the good of the Democratic Party, Sen. Clinton’s fight for the future of America must continue full speed ahead. Rational Democrats need to step up to the plate and make frequent contributions to the Hillary Clinton campaign at hillaryclinton.com.

Just a few short months ago, people were accusing Mike Huckabee of having a man crush on John McCain-being "Reagan Republicans" with similar styles, I could almost accept it.  But what is up with this man crush on Barack Obama by Tim Russert?  Watching Meet the Press this last Sunday was nauseating.  I used to admire Russert for the way he pressed his guests (i.e Hillary Clinton)to get the the answers we all wanted, but for the love of God, it was like Russert was holding Barack's hand through the interview-and now today he is the first to declare Barack the nominee.  What has happened to journalism and why are we going to nominate the least experienced candidate who is not going to have a chance in November?  So we can say we almost had a black president??
CD I totally agree with the waste of campaign monies. Our volunteer Board of Directors (note volunteer) sure could use a drop oout of the proverbial campaign bucket to help our homeless veterans, in central CA or anywhere in the country. Our river bottoms are full of homeless and homeless veterans. What a WASTE.
Tell Hillary and her team to stop screaming "he out spent us Millions of Dollars," everytime they lose a primary.  Last time I checked that's why the money is donated to spend, and not spend it on expensive political consultants and their donuts.  It's plain and simple, they are sore losers and we need to send a message to Obama, should the campaign even think about bailing Hillary our financially we should all stop sending money.  She and Bill have enough money to do the same as Romney did, "support their on campaign."  If she wants to pursue this vinctiveness and harsh campaign and not be a team player and throw in the towel as oppose to setting the stage to ruin Barak, then she should be WOMAN enough to deal with the consequences and ANNIE UP the money to finance her mean spiritedness.  I shouldn't say this because it's on a personal note, but the more and more Hillary unravels before the public, the more and more I understand why she's had a cheating husband.  The woman is cold, vindictive, never wrong and will never admit when she's made a mistake.  No matter how many times Barak has saved her before the public eye, she comes back with a knife and stabs him once again, sometimes I think she's doing to Barak what she never had a chance to do to Bill. "Ruin Him."  That 60 and older crowd is the same ideological group that supports old time division, hate and supremacy in this country.  One thing I can give she and Bill credit for, the cause an old cause to rise again.  So what do we do?  Wait for our grandparents to make that peaceful trip beyond the stars before we are truly able to reshape the country's ideology about race, we have been set back another 20 years.  Thanks to the media, Hill and Bill, they should really be proud of themselves.
It seems the wildcard - Al Gore is not a factor in the trading.
I have written a number of times regarding the nonexistant coverage of Senator Clinton's experience prior to The White House. She brags about her 35 years of experience. The White House (8 years) and (7 years in the U.S. Senate) accounts for less than half of her 35 years. WHAT ABOUT THE OTHER 20 ?????.Who is Hillary Clinton? not the Clinton Administration years or her recent seven years in the U.S. Senate, but her employment, I assume she worked some of those 20 years,in the past because this could have an impact on her positions on the campaign trail.THIS HAS BEEN IGNORED.
I've heard of these prediction markets for a few years, although I have never put any money into them.  I think it's obviously a good concept to measure what's going on  in the public's mind and I think there should be more of these markets and mpr reporting on them.
someone wrote the democrats could field a jackass and he would vote for them. I say thats exactly the problem, the democrats had the election in the bag, and because their leaders are jackasses they are going to get another republican elected this year. Any strong smart decomcrat leader would have stopped this nonsense and said look hillary will be prez, Obame vp and we can rule for the next 16 years, but its too late for that now with all the name calling and mud slinging. I cannot believe what a tragic wasted opportunity the D.P. has let slip through their fingers. They should have united long ago. I see now why their has only been one democrat elected in  the last 40 years, the leadership, or lack there of, has killed them again
I find this situation both frustrating and ironic.  I'll explain:

Last year, my son and I discussed the probability of a Republican president being elected this time around. My son is a typical teenage political agnostic.  Based on all the Republican controlled failures of the Bush terms, we couldn't come up with anything at first.  However, in a bold move, my son blurted out what would be required: the Democratic candidate would have to be a minority or a woman AND Bush would have to put at least $2500 in each voter's pocket.  Pretty close - my son was off a bit on the 2500 bucks.

The point is, no matter how you look at it, the Dems are facing some powerful primal issues related to race and gender.  We've simply never had a black nor female president before.  Never.  Humans can be fickle beings in the voting booth.  The Democratic party needs to get their act together, settle on a single candidate and get to work.  The longer they wait, the more McCain looks to many as the "safer" choice.
Addressing TJ Martinez who commented - no wonder the youth are apathetic, after 232 years our president is elected by a popularity contest.  I AGREE. But, I think education is the key.  During the earlier debates several candidates exhibited much more knowledge about domestic and world affiars.  But, they ran out of money.  Chris Dodd obviously had a commanding intellect, Joe Bided, too. And think of those who just didn't bother to run because they lacked funding or because the knew they couldn't scrape up millions regardless of their abilities.   It would probably be best if the government funded the elections, giving everyone an equal amount until they dropped in primaries to a certain percentage.  Something like that.  At any rate, there has to be a better way.  This is truly rediculous - debating about very short gas tax relief and ignoring details about how to solve the problmes of Iraq, global warming, S.S., health care, infrastructure... God help us all.
Thanks to Alan Boyle, thanks also to Marinus L. I did not know a spike was predictive of a trend. But, I took out a bet on Obama to win the November election as soon as I saw his a victory speech in the first primary.

It seems that HRC's nearly belligerent -- or at least stubborn --  resistance to the projected math for this campaign's outcome is probably contributing a lot towards the snipeing attitudes of some contributors above.

Of course, they were sniping about one thing or the other long before HRC's had these prodigous difficulties.

Never mind.
I like the "project Limbaugh" idea!

I think we will see both Dems in the White House this time next year.  It is the logical way to unite the party and insure that we don't (as Obama says) have another 4 yrs of this GOPs policies.

Pathetic??? Maybe. The money could sure be spent in ways that could affect the country and world in much more beneficial ways. Like the process or not, this is a race for the most powerful (and loneliest) position in the world. Let them spend their money and if you are giving them yours, that's your problem.  Not mine.  I'm not giving anybody anything but a vote!
>Why we continue to keep our head in the sand? If it
>wasn't for EXCLUSIVE black vote, mr.Obama would be
>nowhere. Anyone who may dare and say " No, it's not
>true"?

You are absolutely right. Why, what would he have done without the support of those black Minnesota Scandinavians, or the African-Wisconsinites, or those racial minority Iowan farmers?!
The majority of Obama's MILLIONS of votes came from white voters.  That is why he is winning in total states, total pledged delegates and total votes.

Operation Chaos has failed, the intent was to get the weaker candidate to be the nominee, that candidate is Hillary Clinton;  One of the most hated and divisive people in politics.  With Obama as the Nominee, it has failed.  All Rush can do now is complain about McCain, who enjoys very little Republican support.
What both Clinton and Obama want is a socialist government that takes away all the constitutional rights guaranteed to the populas and organize a government hand out program the likes of which we have not seen since the 40's which of course was brought on by a recession and depression which we will relive without the moral backbone found in our ancestors to survive.  We are the instant gratification generation and it is going to cost us big time.  We will be sitting here watching this phony stock fall as fast as the rest.
Absolutely! I've written extensively about political prediction markets and the wisdom of crowds at my site www.politickr.blogspot.com - The more people who watch and participate, the more accurate the markets will become.
The idea that Mrs Clinton and her supports continue to throw out is this concept that Mr Obama is somehow unelectable suggesting by implication because he cannot win the white blue collar workers  and the over 55 yr old white women that she Mrs Clinton by implication is the better candidate. That implication over looks one crucial fact that the bedrock of the Democratic party is the African- American vote and to suggest that once this process is over they will migrate like obedient persons back to Mrs Clinton nothwithstanding perhaps certain party officals suceeding in manuiplating this process and transfering the nomination to Mrs Clinton dispite Mr Obama's lead in elected delegates and popular vote. Should that gamble fail and they do not trudge back obediently as expected then who becomes unelectable? That is the question that has not yet been asked, because anyone who has any idea about the election process in the United States of America understands that without the core support of the Democratic party being motivated no democratic candiate Mrs Clinton being no exception can win the presidency. That speaks to the argument that only Mrs Clinton is electable. If that argument is to be believe then it has some very unsavory undertones
Jesse,  Democrats on the Left Coast, East Coast and Middle America all think and vote differently.  What are you thinking!!!?  The Democrats here in Middle America think and act like Orange County, CA Republicans- they vote for real family values and political choices that forward the nation.  The Dems in California are so far out there that when you tell Middle America Dems what the CA Dems are doing they call you a liar!!!   They just shake their heads at the "fruits and nuts" in California!  :-)
The next President will inherit the Iraq debacle; deal with nuclear armed Iran; defuse North Korea; decide how much precious resources to commit to save the environment; do nothing or be serious with Isreal - Palestine; condemn or save the home economy. Whether u want to vote for someone or can't be bothered, u must at least care that the next President decides what the next term following Bush is gonna be like.

the share price for Hillary to win should be zero............thats what its worth

This election stock predictor is a wonderful way to measure public seniment regarding both candidates.  Thou persons whom are Hillary supporters need to grow up.  Don't take your marbles and go to vote for McCain in November.  Our children will pay more dearly than we will because the Tennessee democrats could not bring themselves to vote for Al Gore in 2000, because a vote for him would have place a jew within a heart beat of the presidency.  When the keys are turned over to the White House by GWB to the next president, we should make sure the person does not have any of the transgression of GWB. McCain has violated campaign laws and Hillary has a habit of embellishing the truth, like being under sniper fire and blaming Obama for Michigan and Flordia delegates not being able to be seated at the Democratic National Convention.  This election is bigger than Hillary and Obama.  Think about what will happen to this country, if we elect another lier occupy 1600 Pennsylvia Avenue.
The sad thing is that after 232 years, the majority of the population still seems to think that John Q. Citizen is capable of making rational decisions. Put it this way... how many people in the country voted for Bush in the first place? This isn't a matter of 'majority' or electoral college votes... millions of people actually believed the man to be a qualified leader, and the man hasn't changed a bit from his campaigning days. Unless our citizens become better qualified to be voters (by learning more instead of picking sides, watching television, and assuming that one's religion has ANYTHING to do with how well one could lead the country), our days are numbered.

America has been a great experiment, but any experiment will fail with bad resources. The most important ingredient in a democracy is an intelligent and critical voting constituency, and it seems that we're lacking in that department.
Kim Jong Ill was pretty upset when the FA-22 Raptors flew over his house after he got the phone call saying stop with the nuclear weapons from the USA. I am pretty sure any of these candidates can make this call.
If Clinton drops out of the race I will  be FORCED to vote for McCain - a disturbing prospect.
Obama, is an elitist double-talking lier. There are millions of reasons he should not be elected, but just to mention one very obvious one... as far as his minister, there are ONLY 2 options:
1. Either Obama is LYING and knew and supported the minister's racist views all along AND LIED ABOUT IT, or
2. Obama is incompetent in his ability to assess the character of those he trusts.
Either option makes him unacceptable as a leader of our country. Obama is nothing a lying elitist, with no experience and no real qualifiications. He is so unacceptable, MANY of us will choose to change parties rather than support him.
Notwithstanding IF the Michigan delegates are not seated
as voted no matter what the CNC dictates I and my family will Vote Republican and campaign for all Michigan disenfranchised democratic  voters to do so also.
Reply to OPERATION CHAOS. Please spare me. You all give that pig Rush Goebbels far too much credit. Aside from the fact that republican'ts are a greater threat to this country than any terrorist could ever hope to be.....Rush and all his boot licking fans are SCARED! SCARED! SCARED! Plus as McCain continues to felate the FAR RIGHT in order to secure any chance of winning this fall....He will actually turn off any free thinking Democrat that might have considered him a viable alternative. Yes I would have considered voting for McCain....eight years ago! Now he sounds like Bush's Ventriliqist Dummy! Face it....(quote from a hardcore republican't I know and dispise)- "Hillary couldn't even maintain a 30 point lead with Millions in the Bank against a black man in a racist country"....How on earth do you think she would have actually ran this country? Barrack is going to mop the floor with McCain in any debates as Clinton did with Bush and Kennedy did with Nixon and will steamroll into the Presidency as everyone is underestimating how disgusted the poor and the NEW POOR (the former middle class) really are. The truth is the republican'ts know they can't win and they are SCARED SCARED SCARED!
Rush Lintball Limbaugh should be charged with a CRIME.If he speaks for the conservative vote, and the conservative listen, what does it say about them?  They are treacherous, unbelievable, conniving and manipulative.  Are these traits that "lintball" represents?  Yuck!  Also, HRC is only trying to raise the $11.4 million she contributed to her campaign to repay herself - then she will bow out gracefully.  Obama - 08.  Yeah!
Campaign money is NOT wasted; it is not a waste of money to disseminate information. Sure, Hillary and Obama spent $250M. That is about 83 cents per person in the USA, and well worth it considering how drastically the outcome can affect the lives of not only every single person in the USA but ten times as many abroad. I am an Obama voter and contributor, and I am glad to see Hillary exposed as a plain liar on Bosnia, NAFTA and other issues, a pandering politician on the gas tax and other issues, inauthentic and untrustworthy. I am even glad to see Obama distancing himself from Wright and weathering the storm.

It is not just a "popularity" contest, it is a learning process. Sometimes it just takes pain for people to learn a valuable lesson, and our pain comes from Bush and friends, and the lesson we learned is to look beyond the platitudes and sound bites and try to find the real people underneath. Al Gore would have been a better president than Bush, it is unimaginable to me that Gore would have led us to this sorry state, and Gore would beat Bush today. That is a lesson learned -- Stiff as Gore was, for whatever reason, people thought he was more intelligent than Bush; and discounted the value of that, ignored the debates and actual policies, believed the platitudes and took the claim "I'm a uniter, not a divider" at face value, and voted for the regular guy most like them. Now at least sixty million of the people that voted for him realize that was a big mistake and would not vote for him again. Hurrah.

Presumably, they learned a lesson, and it only cost us three thousand billion dollars, and is only costing us twelve billion dollars a month. The money being spent on the campaigns, although breaking records, is about 1/750 of that, and is an excellent investment in educating the voting public to choose the next holder of a job that will literally affect 6 billion lives for at least the next four years, and most especially will affect the physical and financial security, health and happiness of 300 million US citizens pretty dramatically for the next four years. It is costing us, on average, a dollar. I'd pay 100 times that for complete information. I don't care if the candidates spend 2.5 billion, if it saves us one WEEK in Iraq or prevents one WEEK of war with Iran, it will have paid for itself.
Koronin, KC-You got it wrong.  Limbaugh's intent was to create CHAOS-and that's what he has done.  His campaign is "Operation Chaos", words mean things. He was not selecting or endorsing any possible nominee.  Get and education.
