I used to work at a place that manufactured educational robots and vocational trainers.  There are lots of efforts to get kids involved with programming earlier.  Kids are typically amazed at how simple programming is, if they're allowed to get in it quickly and do something cool.

A colleague recently told me about a completely free tool at MIT called Scratch that is a graphical programming language for kids.  This is *seriously* cool stuff.

If you've never programmed before (and even if you have), you should download this and give it a try.  Those MIT guys are a clever lot.
