Back to Egypt's Sin City

What happens in the Hall of Drunkenness, stays in the Hall of Drunkenness ... or does it?

Archaeologist Betsy Bryan and her team of students and researchers from Johns Hopkins University are back at the Temple of Mut, within Egypt's Luxor dig, to delve more deeply into the sex and booze of ancient times - and you can follow their exploits over the Web.

Jay VanRensselaer / JHU
Egyptologist Betsy Bryan. left, talks
with a conservator among column
sections from the Temple of Mut's
Hall of Drunkenness.

Over the past six years, Bryan's online expeditions have documented 3,400-year-old rites at the temple that were conducted to appease the gods and give vent to some of the age-old animal impulses in the process. The highlights apparently involved getting drunk on barley beer, then "traveling through the marshes" (a euphemism for having sex), then passing out, then waking up the next morning for religious services.

Bryan was last at the temple site in January, and now she and her team have returned to continue their excavations of the Hall of Drunkenness, which served as party central for the annual festival during the reign of the pharaonic queen Hatshepsut. The dispatches from Luxor have just resumed, and the team is already hard at work conserving the hall's toppled columns.

This season's crew includes a stone mason, two artists who will train the three undergraduates who are participating, a conservator, volunteers and local workers. The artists and students are copying inscriptions found on the columns, and there are intriguing traces of wall paintings that are in the process of being cleaned up.

Will there be anything to equal last year's discovery of the monumental statue of Queen Tiy, who was King Tut's grandmother? Keep checking Johns Hopkins' Web site for the latest - and if you're hankering for more virtual excavations, click on over to Archaeology magazine's "Interactive Digs." Who knows? They just might whet your appetite to take on a real-life archaeological fieldwork opportunity

Ancient sex and booze...that's gettin' back to the basics, Al.

http://smythspace.blogspot.com/2007/01/expansion.html

Maybe we'll get somewhere now.
We tend to believe that the ancient people of the world must have been pretty stupid because of their constant attempts to appease the Gods.  But few people ever stop and wonder if perhaps they had good reason to fear.  An innovative field called comparative mythology is evolving, whereby we can identify historical components to mythological stories on the basis of cross-cultural comparisons.  It turns out that many of the ancient stories are amazingly similar in both the New and Old Worlds, and very frequently these similarities are conceptual rather than having to do with the words we use to describe them (which would suggest that diffusion of ideas is not the cause).

A man named Dwardu Cardona has published a book called "God Star" that lays out a tremendous amount of evidence for a past catastrophe that is embedded within the ancient texts and iconography.  He quite clearly demonstrates that man tried to appease the Gods because the Gods perpetrated a global catastrophe upon the Earth.  The scholarly nature of this book is astounding.

What's especially unique about his findings is that the ancients, when taken at their word, are quite specific about what happened in the past.  The problem  up to now has been that mythologists interpreting these texts were dumbfounded because the skies described by the ancients weren't anything like the skies we observe today.  This induced much mistranslation and inference that we know better about what they saw than they could have themselves.  What Dwardu realized, however, is that these mistranslations are based entirely upon the cosmology that was being used to interpret the ancient texts.  Within the context of plasma cosmology, where bodies in space possess charge and where plasmas in space are electrical in nature, the stories of the ancients make complete sense.  Dwardu then realized that his conclusions were quite similar to David Talbott's and Wallace Thornhill's Electric Universe Theory.  By attacking the problem from two completely different angles -- one laboratory-based and one mythologically based -- a single theory has emerged that explains many of the greatest mysteries of human and recent planetary history.

Now, you won't hear the mainstream astrophysicists ever say a kind word about these ideas.  But that's because they have not read any of the materials, including Dwardu's book.  But once people do start to read "God Star", it will shake the very foundations of science, leaving few fields untouched.  That book is possibly the most disruptive book that has ever been created for science and even religion.

Those who are uncovering those ruins would be wise to read Dwardu's book and even "The Electric Sky" by Don Scott as it sheds an incredible amount of light on what was going on in the minds of the ancients.
Lovely! Did they smoke weed in there as well?
when studying the ancient we help our life , but diffecult to study the future people but sure we can help them /when they will study our life // it is one circle in one direction
Well, then, not much has changed from our earliest Neolithic ancestors. Sometimes, I think, they (pagans) were much more civlized than we are with their more socially progressive naturism. Our society is too puritanical! Monotheism is "unnatural" and anti-progressive.

 Dear Chris Reeve,

This is a futile attempt to persuade you that mythologies have to be placed into the context of what the Ancients "knew". Was the Earth a flat circular disk, immovable, as the Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn orbited (rising/setting from/into the underworld) it.

So, is this an ancient "fact"? By you, then, just three or four thousand years ago, Earth was the center of our solar system but then, quite suddenly, the whole solar system was rearranged so our planet Earth is now orbiting our G2 spectral star?
How many astronomy texts have you read?

Do you read ScienceDaily.com, Spaceweather.com, Astronomy or Sky and Telescope magazines?

Ever hear of "critical thinking skills"? How about "thinking"?

The mythologies were similar only because our species "thinks" the same. Natural phenomena were "personified" by the Ancients--the spectral G2 star (god) of our Solar System was "believed" to be a golden god riding a gold chariot pulled by four white stallions (Apollo/Aten/Re) rising from the Underworld at dawn (goddess Eos/Dawn) and setting into the Underworld at Dusk. The sun was assocated with the metal gold.

The mythos have no basis in "fact". The "astrophysicists" are not ignoring Dwardu Cardona. He is not doing credible science.

The "skies" then are the "same" as today. The Ancients did not have the "knowledge" we have today.

Planet Venus was then "known" as the Morning and/or Evening Star, also referred to as "Lucifer" or the "oddess Venus" or any other goddess. That does not mean Venus is an actual goddess. They did not "know" that Venus was a planet as we know it today--they did not have the technologies were now have.

There have been fireballs/bolides, comets exploding several miles above the ground, asteroidal fragmentation in the lower atmosphere "raining" down meteorites impacting the ground, cratering events, these are known. However, the Ancients did not "know" that these were comets and/or asteroids. Therefore, they "personified" these events as "super human beings (gods)" displeased with them.

 The sciences are not challenged.
Unfortunately, we are now embedded in religious beliefs drowning in anxiety about sexuality, fertility, and a nice night excessive sipping from the beer jar. I say back to what's important.

(No, it's not a porn site, don't worry!)
"Hall of Drunkenness"? Interesting. Queen Catherine the great was known to have a serious foot & tickle-fetish... and I recently read that Queen Hatshepsut may have had the same fetish. If she did, I wonder if she had her foot & tickle "parties" in the "Hall of Drunkenness"? (They must have been fantastic!)
In the book America B.C. Barry Fell, points out similarities in writings and building techniques of native cultures and ancient cultures from the whole gamut of civilizations known and possibly even some unknown..and being at work and not having my library in front of me to quote other author's works, it seem not just plausible, but certain that there are direct links between the mythology and real history of the ancient peoples all over the globe
The more things change, the more they stay the same.
I guess that's what future people will think of Mardi Gras.
"Going through the marshes" then waiking up and going to church. Doesn't sound like anything has changed in thousands of years.
Hhhmmmm, the more things change the more they stay the same!
AS I WATCHED THE HISTORY CHANNEL LAST NIGHT(THE ORIGIN OF SEX) WAS ON,THIS HAS THE SAME SIMILARITIES AS ALL CULTURES.
Evidently, it doesnt matter what the culture or time, we are basically all the same.
ancient egypt/Kmt was called Ta Mera by its inhabitants just as ancient Sudan/Nubia was Ta Nehisa.  If anyone ever read Budge's misnamed "book of the dead: the papyrus of Ani" (actually called "Pert Em Hru;coming forth by day" or Making Perfect the Khu/shining intelligence") they would see the Metu Neter.
Very interesting... but I don't see anything about Paris Hilton!
actually the skies were different.  quite a few times i have read/watched about the difference in the way the stars appear now.  the earth has an axis which isn't at a 90 degree angle (in relation to the sun) so we have seasons from this.  this tilt makes our skies change over time in a cycle.  we are not at the same part of that cycle as the egyptians were.  this has lead to a lot of understanding as to why certain temples monuments, passages etc were aligned the way they were.  in this period of time, the aligments didnt align to anything.  but during their time they did.  also,  our solar system  goes above and below the plane of our galaxy, which would also cause our skies to change in a cycle.  havent read the books that were mentioned, not sure how credible the authors are, but, to say our skies have changed isnt a lie.  maybe misleading, but not a lie.  the skies are still pretty much the same, were just looking at it from a different angle than they we're.  to throw one more thing into the fray, even the moon isnt as close to earth as it used to be and is continually moving away.  skies do change, stars are born, stars explode, space is not very static at all.
dear openminded,

Although your input has some merit, it is not quite precise.

Yes, Earth's axial rotational tilt "wobbles", precesses, through the 13 "zodiac" constellations. Currently, at the Vernal Equinox, the sun appears to cross the celestial equator in the constellation of Pisces. Prior to @ 150 BCE to @ 2500 BCE in the constellation Aries; from @2500 to 4500/5000 BCE it was in Taurus. IN @ 2500 CE, it will be in Aquarius. So, yes, it was differnt in Ancient Egypt. The North Polar Star was near Vega, too! However, the star patterns have not changed--different peoples created/imagined different star patterns with the same constellations/patterns that you "see" today.

The moon is increasing its orbit outward @ 2 cm/year. So, no, not a noticeable amount.

Great Comets, meteor showers, fireballs/bolides, meteorite impacts, etc., no changes.

Visible supernova rarer. Last "new star" supernova aroumd 1054 CE? However, with our advanced technologies, we can "see" supernova events in other glaxies regularly.

The major difference was that their night skies were "dark" with no moon. They were much more "aware" of visible celestial events--expecially lunar/solar eclipses and major meteor showers that were "magical/mysterious/religious", just awesome events for them. Most people today are hardly even aware of the celestial events--night skies dimmed by suburban sprawl. And, apathy.

Yes, the cosmos is not very static at all!

I am amused at how progressive, how enlightened, how intellectually superior modern man and woman think they are! Would anyone be surprised if we are only re-discovering the wisdom and knowledge we've lost as a species?

"There is nothing new under the sun!" The more things change the more they remain the same indeed!!

But we are sooooo much smarter...
Here's an interesting fact.  The ancient Egyptian pharoahes and heirarchy that attended these rituals also had traces of cocaine and tobacco in their mummified corpses.  This is strange because no where else on earth does cocaine grow naturally other than South America, and tobacco at the time was limited to N. America.  Possibly some may have existed in the middle east, but how then did the Egyptians recieve coke/tobacco at a time when trans atlantic travel was thought to be impossible? They did build the pyramids, so anything is possible.......
Chet, what do you mean no moon?
awsome. glad to know they did it too :)
We make our own meaning/truth. Science works. Myth, too. In the process of discovering ourselves, it helps to invite the discourse of others, as opposed to collapsing to the impulse to harangue a "competing discourse." Of course, this comment risks doing just the same. Take care, we must, friends.
The big picture in all of this is the wonder of a universe that is so vast and while remaining relatively stable changing all the time. It makes me feel very small to know I am attached to such a lineage of man/woman observing wonders.
It is an amazing thought to realize that today we are viewing the same stars and night events that our very aged ancesters did.  My mind goes to the ancients of old from Biblical days. Just imagine the young sheperd boy David gazing at the night stars while writing songs and prayers(Psalms) to the God of Abraham, Issac, Jacob, Moses. These men lived out their lengthy lives in awe of the skies-never doubting who made the heavens and the earth. Our lives pass by sooo quickly yeah?  Make your life count! Some people won't find out 'till it's too late.
Janis of Pleasanton - I'm going to take it upon myself to interpret Chet's remarks.  I took it to mean that when there is no moon at night as it waxes and wanes, the Egyptians would have had an extra dark sky to look at and in the absence of 'city glow' and high-rise buildings to block their view of the sky they would have had a reason to make up some explanation of what they could see  -- Carl Sagan's billions and billions of stars.
I find it most interesting, the different focus of people re" the planets, and/or the belief that the stars configurations had something to do with what the Egyptians lives would be. Then creating a mythological religion, to basically have major orgies, and excesses of all kinds.

I am not going to pretend I know anything much about the planet's configurations, as our esteemed scientists, or certainly people who have a great deal of knowledge about it.At one point in my earlier life, I became absolutely obsessed with Astrology- and bought books every month to find out what would be my future, and the future of others I cared about. Now after gaining maturity and some good common sense- it finally occured to me- that it would be next to impossible that everyone born on the same day as me, would have the same things happening in their lives. Same thing with Numerology. One day it just seemed yo be "what's the point"? All of it bcame so much gibberish. A waste of my valuable time.

Re: the Egyptians, always fascinated me, and I did all I could to find out what their lives were like. I went to many showings at the Art Gallery, each time consisting of archeological remains of ancient Egyptian Pharoahs. The most recent showing was all the artifacts found from the "boy King", Tutenkahman (sp.) It was a most fascinating time, this very young boy becoming a Pharoah. Also so much gold and jewels, even make-up that was similar to ours, and hair styles for women that would fit right in our society. What amazed me, was their method of preserving the body, and then the beautiful golden sepulcher, it was placed in. Also their belief that Pharoah should have much wealth and beauty to carry into his next life. Also a very amazing thing to me, was the excess of gods they worshipped, all given high respect and regard. Bugs,a creature with the head of a cow, but the body of a human, way too many for me to describe. I can see why at their point in time they were revered- and had great power and influence. Thanks for all the additional information. It was very interesting reading it.
Thanks, Des Emery! That's what I meant.
"Keep looking up."
Better stick with Astrology, Nancy.
you guys are all illusion by the material energy, who cares it is all going to be destroyed anyway, then get converted into another form.
that is so cool
how where pyramids built
did the egyptians know about the solar system
and is it true that there is traces of coke/tobacco in the mummies?
