Thumbs up ... and takeoff!

Posted: Thursday, April 26, 2007 2:33 PM by Alan Boyle

Physicist Stephen Hawking boarded the Boeing 727 plane for his weightless experience, and just a few minutes later "G-Force One" took off from NASA's Shuttle Landing Facility in Florida.

As Hawking rolled up to the door of the jet, Zero Gravity co-founder Peter Diamandis stood by his side and flashed a thumbs-up sign for the cameras. One of Hawking's nurses held up his paralyzed hand for the same gung-ho gesture.

It took several steps to get Hawking aboard the plane, which was sitting at one end of the runway at NASA's Shuttle Landing Facility in Florida. He was lowered from a shuttle bus on one lift. Next, a nurse assistant ushered him across the runway to a waiting panel truck. Another lift raised him up into the truck. The whole back of the truck rose up on a hydraulic scissors lift to bring Hawking to the level of a door at the rear of the airplane.

Hawking and his entourage emerged from a ramp that went over the truck's cab, and that's when the thumbs-up photo op unfolded. Hawking was then carried to his seat at the back of the specially equipped plane - and then the plane rolled out and flew up, up and away.

Wow, this is amazing. A man like Steven deserves this and so much more. I belive that many physicists are brilliant, but Steven is, in my opinion, one of those geniuses that come along every 300 years or so. He's an inspiration to the world and a prime example of what people can overcome. Keep it up man...
Hawking is my favorite super-human super-hero ever. He could whoop Chuck Norris with the sound of his voice, like in dune or some junk.
I took this flight Monday. If for no other reason it is a thrill ride...he doesn't need a reason or motivation beyond just having fun...and it is!!
I think it's great that Professor Hawking got to experience zero-G's on one of the so-call "vomit comets." I'm sure he was absolutely enthralled and fascinated by the whole experience. If anyone is deserving of such a great and awesome and unearthly experience, it is certainly Professor Hawking, and I'm very happy for him!
hey that looks fun
I am so glad that this great thinker was able to experience something so vital to his research for his entire life. I hope he gets to do it in space next time.
This was absolutely beautiful. I can think of no one that would be more deserving than Professor Hawkin. It was an amazing accomplishment and I really do not want to hear anyone else ever say "I can't or I don't feel like it". Gods speed on his pending space flight.
I don't know anything about the man himself, but glad to hear he is having fun!
What a great accomplishment! Look what this man has done in his lifetime and how he opened the universe. People say it is a waste of money but I would rather see him in space than giving it to the government to throw away on another raise for a politician.
I think that this was a well deserved opportunity for one of the globe's most Brilliant mind. We were rooting for you down here in the Bahamas.
Shouldn't it be G-Force None??
