The Face on Mars ... and more

Posted: Thursday, April 12, 2007 7:12 PM by Alan Boyle

Today's a big day for squares, sisters and faces in space ... and we're not just talking about the parties to celebrate Yuri's Night. Researchers explained what gives the Red Square nebula its extremely symmetrical shape, as reported in this story from our partners at Space.com. Meanwhile, NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope has come out with a colorful infrared image of the Pleiades, also known as the Seven Sisters. (I do hope you're able to see Venus and the Sisters in the heavens.) And the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter has delivered a fresh look at an old favorite, the Face on Mars. Click on the links below for the highlights:

• HiRISE: Orbiter's camera steals a peek at the Face on Mars
• Spitzer takes a feathery picture of the Seven Sisters ...
• ... And sheds light on a mystery of galactic proportions
• CICLOPS: Shifting strands around Saturn

is a cool manifestation of the effects of very small (a few hundred meters across) 'moons' *embedded* in Saturn's rings. Smaller than Cassini's imaging resolution, their gravitational effects on ring particles are nevertheless quite evident, if one know's what to look for . . .
I love the seven sisters and wanted to see Venus with it, but the cloud cover has just been non-stop :(  Ug... Us 'global warming' folks are sliding down in our chair right now trying to make ourselves scarce given all the dreary cold April weather. Haha!

If any one is a fan of the C-130, you might be interested to know the Airbus A400M is coming along nicely and all the sections for the first static test aircraft have arrived in Spain.  It is 50% larger yet, almost as fast as a C-17! The slightly swept wing is believed to be the largest composite wing in the world though it still does have some metal in it.
A few years ago I was at Camp Cazadero in the redwoods north of the Russian River. It is primarily used as a music camp by the schools in Berkeley (and many other purposes, as it is owned by a church group).

While there, I looked through their library. The science section was dominated by about 10 well used copies of a book called "The Orion Mystery: Unlocking the Secrets of the Pyramids" by Bauval & Gilbert.

It was obvious that these books were being used as science textbooks in a formal class setting due to the student's notes.

These books promote the idea that about 12,400 years ago the Egyptians, under the ET guidance of Osiris, built the Giza Pyramid complex as a map of Orion's belt with air shafts in the Great Pyramid being astronomical sighting tools. This is presented in a pseudo-scientific manner, using the words & select techniques from science, but with the preconceived result of obvious alien influence on the design & construction of the pyramids. Particularly interesting was the tortured logic & math used to support their ideas.

I read most of the book during a rainy day. It would have made a fine textbook for a critical thinking class, but as science it was ludicrous.

The addendum to the book was about the then newly discovered "Face" on Mars & its accompanying "pyramid complex" which they claim was built by the same aliens as Giza.

It's remarkable how much better you can actually see when you "clean your glasses". It's also remarkable how the human mind can create patterns & meanings from "noise".

hi ho

The face on Mars:
Really nice view of the face on Mars, however my thoughts are that it’s a crash landing of some sort, with the object enterning at a sloped trajectory pushing the soil, it resembles a crater, but not like other craters. The object may still be buried there, you never know.
