Wow... Thanks for pointing out the Planet Earth special! That's some amazing photography! The mountain shots!!
'Galapagos', was fascinatingly, beautiful, educational, and exceptionally filmed and narrated. I enjoyed it immensely, that is something that belongs in a science class and even a history class (Darwin's discovery). 'Planet Earth' is true entertainment, far surpasses any primetime show on television. I would love to see the camera equipment used in these documentaries, and the film and photos that don't make it into the final program. Discovery and National Geographic please keep up the fantastic work.
Planet Earth did so well I didn't even think they needed to mention the need for conservation at the end.  It was - to me - a given.  It seems to me that pointing out societies' wastefulness is almost like calling someone a drunk these days.  The person doing the drinking takes offense to it and it doesn't do either side much good.

Although I love nature and am a competent outdoorsman, I'm really not as much of a nature person as you might think.  I love big cities and I think my main goal in life is to have society achieve its full potential - where environmentalism is just one of many measurements of its success.  How well we do on the ecology front is like a measure of our own efficiency and effectiveness.  Much like those who methodically restore an antique or classic car, you don't just stop with a nice paint job.  If smoke is billowing out the back end, it is a sign of a much more serious problem!  Sigourney Weaver did a great job!

I think it was here on the log a few years ago that someone had totally debunked the Loch Ness Monster story by saying the rumor was started by a traveling circus and that it had taken photos of its swimming elephants when it visited the lake regularly and started the roomer to draw attention.  I believed the article but always wondered about how elephants swim and if it would indeed be mostly under water like that (a seemingly unnatural and dangerous thing to do).  Well... as they showed, those elephants played and played even entirely submerged! Good by old Nessy :)
