A view to a satellite kill

Posted: Thursday, January 25, 2007 8:30 PM by Alan Boyle

The effects of China's anti-satellite test are graphically seen in an animation showing the debris that it created, and how all that junk matches up with the orbits of the international space station and other spacecraft. A satellite-tracking expert created the video clip to draw attention to the potentially perilous traffic in low Earth orbit - a space jam that just got worse.

Beijing's Jan. 11 missile strike didn't really hurt anybody ... yet. The only known casualty so far was an aging Chinese weather satellite, which was targeted to test the feasibility of knocking out spacecraft in orbit. It was the first test of an orbital space weapon since 1985 - and it worked.

"We know from past experience that these types of events, whether they're ASAT [anti-satellite] tests or unintentional collisions, typically generate at least hundreds of objects. Some models estimate numbers in the thousands," said T.S. Kelso of the Center for Space Standards and Innovation, the research arm of Pennsylvania-based Analytical Graphics Inc.

Kelso's animation pinpoints just a few pieces of that debris - the 33 objects that are being tracked publicly by the North American Aerospace Defense Command, or NORAD. The video traces the space station's orbit as well, showing the potential for a smash-up at an orbital intersection.

"It's just like two streets crossing. ... You don't need to have something the size of a truck hit the space station," he said. "You could have something the size of a BB, because of the orbital speeds."

The Chinese satellite shootdown adds new twists to an already-complicated orbital traffic pattern. Of course, NORAD and NASA keep a close eye on the potential debris risk to the space station, spy satellites and other government-owned spacecraft, but Kelso said thousands of additional objects in low Earth orbit have to be watched as well.

That's the rationale behind a project called Satellite Orbital Conjunction Reports Assessing Threatening Encounters in Space, or SOCRATES. Kelso maintains the 3,000-satellite SOCRATES database as part of his work for the center as well as for his CelesTrak satellite-tracking Web site.

"We do a twice-daily report where we take all the unclassified data that the Air Force releases, and we do predictions for every payload," Kelso told me. "We know some satellite operators go out and look at that. It's not perfect, but it's better than closing your eyes and pretending nothing's going to happen."

Kelso said SOCRATES typically picks up 1,000 events every day in which one orbiting object is estimated to come within 3 miles (5 kilometers) of another one. Today, for example, the Web site projected that two Russian Cosmos satellites would zoom within 100 feet (28 meters) of each other at a relative speed of 25,000 mph (11.121 km/sec).

If satellite operators see that their assets might be involved in a close encounter, they would usually run their own numbers to assess the potential threat and take action if necessary.

"For the overwhelming majority of stuff that gets up there, there isn't anybody who's going to call them up and say, 'Hey, something's getting close to your satellite. You may want to do some more analysis and see if you need to react,'" Kelso said.

As space becomes increasingly crowded, due to the addition of more satellites as well as smash-ups like the one reported this month, SOCRATES could set the stage for a more formal approach to orbital traffic management.

"It's our feeling that, at some point, somebody's going to need to step up," Kelso said. "What SOCRATES is intended to be is a proof of concept, to show that it can be done."

For more about Kelso's analysis of the satellite-killing test, check out this page on the Center for Space Standards and Innovation's Web site. You'll find a higher-resolution, downloadable version of the satellite-tracking animation. And if you download the free AGI Viewer software, you can play around with the orbital paths to your heart's content. Think of it as a 3-D mapper for Earth's high frontier.

I am never amazed at the stupiditiy of communist goverments. China wants to be a respected space power and does something so completely irresponsible as destroying a satellite without understanding or respecting the possible carnage it will create.

China is a menace to the free world and the U.S as well as many other countries, not to mention Wal-Mart continue to support massive production of goods from a knowingly rogue country.

To me, this space based weapons test should be viewed as hostile and sanctions should be put in place against China. China is dangerous, aggressive and willing to blatantly thumb its collective nose at the world. The world ignores the problem that it is creating by sending cold cash to a rogue, dangerous and irresponsible communist regime.

China is dangerous and needs to be kept at bay. China is clearly and completely the enemy of the free world.
If the safe guards are not in place then I guess we as the human race will learn another lesson in reactionary cause, then foresight is lost but if you can predict the future then try and change it.  never try you either do or you don't. your choice. I like your honesty!  Always with no voice there is no choice!
I guess this proves that you don't need hundreds of billions invested in Star Wars to launch a ton of BBs into space to threaten just about everything.  At those velocities even a mere paint speck can cause damage.

We really need a trash truck-type satellite and unfortunately it's going to take an accident to get it.
your image is linked to the wrong video, dummies.
DIDN'T THE US ALLOW CHINA TO PURCHASE, FROM THE U.S., THE MACHINE TOOL TECHNOLOGY NECESSARY TO BUILD MISSLE NOSE CONES, AUTHORIZED BY PRES. CLINTON ?
The stupidity of communist governments?  The stupidity is not exclusive!  Checked out Washington lately?  They did what the shrub has hinted.  Don't forget, for the first time since WWII we now have an administration (purportedly) advocating first strike preemptive actions.  Nobody was that shrill during the Cold War.  The Chinese have long had a cultural bias that China is the Center of the world (Middle Kingdom) and anyone else is a barbarian.  Throw in the natural paranoia of a dictatorship...

The problem is now the generation of debris that places anything in an intersecting orbit at risk.  If there is significant relative velocity, there is a problem.  All you have to do is loft a load of gravel into the path of a satellite and let its own velocity do the rest.  Getting hit by a rock at 17,000 mph is no joke.
Whew, John in St. Louis is bitter. The Chinese aren't a menace to the free world. Humans are. The human race, regardless of its skin color or facial orientation, can be "stupid", "irresponsible", lack knowledge, "dangerous", "aggressive," or blatantly anything as long as there is someone who is willing to point the finger at others and not accept the responsibility to help others in order to better the world as a whole. Thank goodness that there are people who look to the future and create things like SOCRATES. As stated, this program will HELP OTHERS to create ways to safeguard and guide the ignorant intentions of novice space/aeronautic engineers. It is a learning process and we are on the curve. Oh and by the way John, the most immediate dangers to the free world, in terms of countries, are the middle eastern nations that support international terrorism and the Korea's. They cant get along either.

[To John ...]  All China really needs to do to topple the US is cash in their government bonds.  You know that, right?  We would be crushed without a single shot being fired.  Gone is the world of militaristic might, global economics is the only means of control now.  So yeah, they should have told us and allowed us to work out the numbers of projected paths of trajectory.  But hey; has your boss ever done something you didn't like?  Did you attack him or her over it and go complaining to the rest of your company about how irresponsible they were / are?  Of course not, because he / she still signs your checks.

Get real.

The notion of keeping China at bay is nonsense. If those days ever existed, they are long gone. China is a major economic, diplomatic, and scientific center. They do not ask our permission and they will not respond in the desired way to threats or intimidation. It is time that the west (America) realize that Chinese are very proud of their accomplishments and will respect an elders advice but not demands.
Oh please. Right now the US of A is by far the largest threat to the world.

They shot down their own satellite, they haven't killed thousands of innocent Iraqis.
I don't know the problem that Americans have about China, let us stop being paranoid, if the United States had launched this satellite killing missile i doubt if this protest will be this hard. No doubt China committed an irresponsible act, the United States also built and launched nukes and the world is living with it. so the world will also live with a China that have sattellite killing capabilty afterall their is no way to know that they are capable of killing a satellite unless it is tested just as the USA did with its nukes and other unpalatable weapons
China is WalMart and WalMart is China
It would be a relatively inexpensive exercise to launch ball bearing bombs to detonation points in low earth orbit. These devices would easily saturate these orbital levels with enough debris that all eyes-in-the-sky, nav-sats, com-sats and military and civilian hardware in orbit could be destroyed. It would be a terrible set-back for a humanity that is preparing to become a space exploring species. The debris would effectively imprison humanity on earth. Paranoid regimes might consider this an acceptable sacrifice for the sake of national security. For those of us eager to undertake the challenge of space exploration this possibility should be considered as a probability. Perhaps there are strategies that can be undertaken to minimise such an unreasonable development.
Certainly the Red China carefully chose the date and time of the strike to cause the greatest chance of future damage to Western communications.  The question is only when this might occur.  What date(s) have the computer programs mapping the debris provided?
Video is not working for me in Firefox or IE7 (bring back IE6).

As far as the ASAT goes, if we lose any satellites from this "minor test" via China, they should not complain when NASA decides not to partner with them and chooses Japan or India in their stead
Why would China need to develop an anti-satellite missle?  This is a question the Bush adminstration, as well as the rest of the "free-world" needs to present to China.  Do they need another way to get their sorry goods to U.S. markets by way of space traveling container ships?  Maybe Bush could ask Wal-Mart to speak to China since they have more leverage than the U.S. government. At least it seems that way.  How about some sanctions on China, Mr Bush?
Re: John, St. Louis, Mo.

Even if you're right, all China needs to do is call in all the debt we owe them (our government loves to take loans from these guys) and our economy goes to crap...  Why do you think the US government doesn't try to fix the issue where China is messing with currency values so that WalMart wants to do business with them.  Undervalued China currency means cheap labor..  Means our corporations go there for manufacturing...

We have already sold our soul to the devil.. Now try and get it back why don't you...
Maybe creating a million tiny missles WAS the chicom goal. Maybe it's a test to see if they can turn near earth orbit into a high speed blender so as to render any U.S. satellite superiority moot in a future conflict. No satellites = no GPS and suddenly most of our military equipment is high priced junk.
It is amazing to me how mankind is slowly encapsulating the world with this man made debris. It seems each launch is slowly locking ourselves out of beyond Earth space exploration. It is high time to change our methods when encroaching upon space and ensure all useless junk has a way of entering the Earth's atmosphere and becoming oblitered without junking up our cosmic access routes. This should be a requirement prior to any launch.
If you have ever seen a map of the space debris already in orbit, you would know that this article is a racist piece of propaganda, designed to whip up hysteria against China. The first comment to it is proof positive that it has done its job brilliantly.

The Americans are responsible for the majority of the 'space junk' that is in orbit. That is a fact. If you apply scientific standards of objectivity to this blog it will be a much better read IMHO.
Don't kid yourself. China doesn't do anything by accident. Its moves were highly thought out and calculated. I attended International Institute of Navigation symposiums for years. Each year there were more and more young Chinese wiz kids in attendance, and fewer and fewer young U.S. attendees. We have been relegated to Grey Beard status, stuck in a past we can no longer influence. Unless something changes soon, the world will belong to the Chinese.
I do not understand what you people are talking about could someone explain this to me in a simple english is the world coming to an end.
If China wanted to do damage to the USA, shooting a satellite out of the sky and creating debris in orbit is minor when you think about what China could do to our economy if they stopped manufacturing!

Our US economy is in the hands of, as John from St. Louis (above post): "China is dangerous, aggressive ". Let's not forget a fascist dictatorship.

Let's just hope they play nice!
Send them up there to pick up their mess!
Communist China is fast becoming a technologically advanced superpower everyday and may someday pose a direct threat to our way of life. My fellow Americans should consider this everytime they shell out their hard earned money to buy Made in China. Take a moment to look at the tag and see if it is worth it. I'd rather pay a premium for American goods.
MAYBE IT WAS A BAD DECISION FOR CHINA TO KILL THEIR OWN SATELLITE, IT'S NOT AS BAD AS A LOT OF OTHER CRAP GOING ON IN THIS WORLD, CHAVEZ FOR INSTANCE THIS GUY IS TRULY MORE OF A PROBLEM TO HUMANITY THAN A CONVENTIONAL MISSLE TAKING OUT THEIR OWN PROPERTY, LAST TIME I LOOKED I DIDN'T SEE ANY CERTAIN FLAGS,FLYING AROUND IN THE SPACE ABOVE EARTH. IF PEOPLE REMEMBER, HITLER WANTED THE PERFECT RACE AND RULE THE WORLD,WELL THERE ARE ALOT AND I DO MEAN ALOT OF COUNTRIES WORLD WIDE WHO ARE TRYING TO PUT THAT SAME PROFILE ON THE U.S.OF A.WE ARE WAY TOO THIN AND THE NATIONAL DEFICIT IS BEYOND REPAIR NOW, THE ONLY WAY TO CHANGE IT IS TO HIT THE AMERICAN PEOPLE AGAIN IN THEIR POCKETS, WHICH POVERTY IS GROWING OUT OF CONTROL, I DON'T KNOW JUST LET ME SHUT UP !!!!!
Irresponsible? Yes. Did it achieve an objective? Yes. China is now perceived as a force to be considered in space and it's been accomplished in a fairly cost effective way. Do they want to upset the International applecart? I can't believe they do. They have too much to lose. They carry a good portion of our national debt along with others. They look to America as the economic engine that drives the world. They may want to bring us down, but not in the foreseeable future. Hopefully, most of the debris will eventually fall out of orbit without catastrophic collisions.
Yeah, those darn stupid communist countries.  Creating the same sort of debris that American ASAT weapons created on Sept 13 1985 when an ASAT fired from an F-15 destroyed the P78 SolWind satelite and created a similar dust cloud.

Now I know that two wrongs don't make a right, but what about letting him who has never sinned cast the first stone?
Our Reps., played the China card. Greed can become a big price to pay.
There is speculation of whether or Jintao Hu knew of the launch. In any case it is a political move, attempting to persuade the US to the bargaining table on space weapon non-proliferation. In Chinese culture "face" (as in the term "saving face") is very important. By doing the test secretly, they have taken away the US's "face" and demonstrated to the world that this is the type of weapons/capability that a treaty would prevent (no matter how unenforceable that treaty may be).
It's easy to blame China for doing "irresponsible things" in the pursuit of economic, political, and global growth. But most of the people who tend to do the blaming are products and beneficients of those same actions to a greater or lesser extent, because the entire developed world has been JUST as irresponsible. China isn't truly Communist anymore; they have so many different PRIVATE economic opportunities in that country that Karl Marx is probably spinning every time someone calls it Communist. Sure, China isn't Democratic, and it may not be best friends with the US, but supporting that kind of fear mongering and simple ignorance of history isn't helpful either.
The only question here is was there another reason behind destroying the sat. Is it at the same altitude as say military sats that could be on a collision course and cause damage. These are the questions that I think should be dicussed in an open forum.
I guess whenever I add a video to an item I'm taking a bit of a chance on compatibility.... I can see the video in IE6 and IE7, but not in Firefox. If you're missing it in IE, perhaps there's a Flash update that's needed. In any case, you should be able to download the higher-resolution files from the center:

http://www.centerforspace.com/asat/

The WMV file is 50 megs, and the QT file is even bigger, so you might have to wait a while. But the resolution is a lot better than the streaming-video file we're offering with the center's permission. Sorry about any compatibility problems that folks are having.
Alan - Another good blog subject.  People who log on with comments need to remember that our brains and Asiatic brains perceive realities differently.  The Chinese explored the world from the west coast of the Americas to the east coasts of Africa well over 500 years ago, and having seen what there was to see, went back home to China and stayed there.  They, as we know, are very good at copying the West in many ways.

They see the West's affluence and copy that.  They see our politics and do not copy that.  In our view they are somewhat schizophrenic, as we seem to be to them.  We send them a message of power with the Enola Gay and the atom bombs it carried.  They send us a more subtle message (and make sure it's not pre-announced) of a power we didn't expect them to have, and bring down one of their own satellites.  A polite kind of warning that we don't seem to understand.  Confrontation is our way and is understandable to the rest of us.  To the Asian it is just bad manners.  Will we learn from them or will they expand their comprehension of us?

For Chris Eldridge and others, the formula for BBs in space is Energy equals one-half mass times velocity squared.  The higher the velocity compared to that of the satellite determines the damage done.  A directed shot from a missile going in the opposite direction would really spread destruction.
The "Mighty China", is not a threat to the global community. But the only thing happens rightnow, people get paranoid especialy the U.S. for what China could deal the incoming threat of the "Super Power Nation" like Britain,France,Italy,Spain. Let the dominant species of the East pave way to the changing tides of the space race.
I wasn’t surprised that Chinese made such kind progress and move. But I was surprised that few people here really understand why Chinese want to prevent an independent Taiwan or prevent a war by firing a ASAT missile.  The signal is very clear for US government that it has to do more to prevent an independent Taiwan or face war with Chinese. The ASAT test actually happened few days after the pro-independent Taiwan president stopped over US when he visited a South American country this month. And the president is planning to change the constitution of Taiwan to declare formal independence. Few American news analyzers connected the Chinese test with the stop over. Even few American people actually know that Taiwan official name is the Republic of China, and the current constitution claims both mainland and Taiwan and the reunification with mainland is the goal in the constitution too. No US report so far mentions this fact to the US people. However, overwhelmingly, most of reports fan a justice or heroic feeling as defending Taiwan as an independent country. In my opinion, such kind biased reports are very dangerous. They could lead to a complete destruction of both China and US. Tragedy may be rooted in those untruthful reports and news.
A shard of metal the size of a marble will reduce a satellite to a lethal swarm of shrapnel. A chunk of metal the size of a softball would annihilate spacecraft like the Hubble Space Telescope, which cannot get out of the way of these lethal projectiles. A larger object will obliterate the ISS, and render manned space flight suicidal and launching satellites very risky financially. Just a small shard of metal would not only kill an astronaut, it would turn him or her into yet more debris that could kill someone else. All because objects pass each other in low Earth orbit at average relative velocities of 20,000 mph. China's recent ASAT test is just one more example of their drive to become a world empire, just as the U.S. did when it lauched SLBM's and ICBM's with live nuclear warheads and detonated them in space over the Pacific ocean, or on targets in the ocean. We've had anti-satellite weapony for more than 20 years, including lasers and a missile that can be fired from a fighter, pop up and smash a satellite to bits. Like the Chinese, the USAF blew a functioning solar research satellite out of the sky with it in a test. The Russians also have ASATS including satellites that carry warheads up to a target vehicle, then blow themselves and their targets up. Don't forget putting nuclear bombs in orbit and then exploding them so the EMP and nuclear radiation torches the electronics aboard the other sides satellites is also an ASAT weapon. These tests and the un-intentional explosions of old satellites and rocket bodies are going to make it impossible to do anything in space safetly if they are allowed to continue. Steps should be taken to clean up the mess and stop new debris from getting up there in the first place. Space is not self cleansing, the higher the orbit, the longer it takes before drag and other forces pulls it down into the atmosphere. Also, debris can smash active spacecraft or other shards of junk, spawing more debris in a chain reaction. Even after falling into Earth's atmosphere, large and potentially deadly chunks of rocket stages and other space junk can and do reach the ground at very high speeds. That was why the Compton Observatory and Mir were intentionally steered into the Pacific Ocean, massive showers of red hot metal were spotted crashing into the sea. Some pieces weight several tons. Steps to reduce the debris proliferation are already being done though venting all unused propellants to space once rocket stages complete their missions, and making spacecraft modular, to eliminate the hazards of nuts and bolts whizzing through the void. Now someone has to find a way to get rid of the trash that's already there, because in medium and geostationary orbit, objects will stay up there for millenia, or even longer. ASAT weapons aggravate this problem when they are used. Ironically, a shard of the satellite the Chinese destroyed may srike and destroy another Chinese satellite, or manned spacecraft. That did in fact happen to a French satellite. Taras
Project Wintergreen by the USA has already put millions of needles in low orbit as an anti-ICBM weapons test + long wave communications test, so China is WAY behind the curve.
Is there any conclusive evidence that this satellite was 'shot down'? Was it just a case of an old on-board fuel cell, or the like, exploding? With all of the recent talk of new military 'catch-up' spending, combined with the secrecy, I don't know what to believe.
OK... Lets face facts.  1. If China wants to stop importing their cheaply made products off the backs and lives (child slavery), of their cititzens. Let it be SO... Have you all forgotten who WE, (The USA) ARE?

The main reason we import so much from all over the world is because we have OSHA, and other environmental agencies that essentially sky (rocket) the cost of production due to the cost of cleanup, wages, retirement benefits and so on... But we're  THE USA.  We could make ANYTHING WE WANT! and @ ANY TIME TOO!  All China had to do was ask to simply fly up there and pick ANY Satelite out of Orbit with the Shuttles Claw Arm!!! And I'm sure We would have obliged...
I think that China is trying to avoid any conflict with US. Taiwan leader would be so bold on pursuing independence if not supported by US weaponry. Killing satellite has more to do with making statement to Taiwan than seeking trouble with US. After all, do you agree China has its own national interests to defend ?
You can speculate why they did it but the fact is they are taking lessons from N. Korea. We will think them ignorant and go out of our way to show them the light by selling ourselves out by giving away technologies so they don't make the same mistake. They are waiting for us to give it up and area already in wait for the next tactical error for the next needed technology. We dare not go along with banning weapons in outerspace. We know we will need weapons to protect our assets in space. The very act that perpetuated this article requires a weapon to clear up the mess. We will need a laser to burn up what extensive debris they left out there, because most of the debris was pushed into a higher orbit making the debris a problem unless removed for many years to come. Unless we wise up they will continue to act the fool again.
The testing of this anti-satellite technology has many implications, and yes, may have been wreckless.  Chalk it up to oversight by the Chinese. Does this make them villians? no. When will you grow up and realize that the Chinese government isn't really all that different than the American government? Do you think mr. bush is going to ask permission to test a new top secret weapon, and ask for the consent of the rest of the modernized world? Did we ask for permission to test stealth bombers and nuclear warheads? did we ask for permission to begin designing and testing of the anti-ballistic missile laser systems, that, btw, could just as easily knock out satellites. How much orbital debris have we ourselves created by losing tools, and yes, launching spacecraft and satellites into orbit? Don't blame the Chinese for taking a course of action that every country with space aspirations has taken. The missile might have been wrong, but it's really no worse than anyone else has done.

I'd rather see China with this technology than a country that intends to do harm to their neighbors.
You think this is a " shot" wait until you know who takes over use of the Panama Canal Zone & who is kicked out of using it...Strike two !
This will speed up the development of plasma weapons to vaporize the mess.
This incident reminds me of the Antarctic Expedition of years ago, and the damage the Chinese did to the environment as well as the slaughter of hundreds of penguins and other fauna by their scientific team there. This country appears to have organized itself along lines of a forced command economy model...even though their vestiges of traditional culture have availed them of seeming worldwide approval for abandoning Marxism for capitalistic excess. When this country shoots down an orbiting object without regard to the environmental effects, it can only mean that their discernment in regards the waste left behind is a part of their traditional culture that has not been able to survive the once Marxist, now capitalist drive toward modernization. The world is in deep trouble. Seems like the people who armed North Korea, conquered Tibet and invented the Khmer Rouge are running their Space Program !
DON'T BLAME IT ALL ON CHINA, THEIR STUNT WAS DUMB.  WE, AND THE RUSSIANS MAINLY HAD CREATED A JUNK PILE IN NEAR EARTH ORBIT, AND ITS STAYING THERE MUCH LONGER THAN EXPECTED.  MAYBE WE SHOULD JOIN CHINA IN SOME EFFORT TO CLEAN UP THE AREA BEFORE WE HAVE A SHUTTLE MISSION FOILED BECAUSE OF IT.
In response to Wade Whitlock, Aberdeen wrt First Strike -
Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) change world politics. Do you want to wait for two million folks in MD to be murdered before you strike? You can avoid a pre-emptive strike that way. Since Sadam would NOT provide access to the U.N. in order to prove he was not making WMDs I believe it was necessary to bring him down and then help the Iraqi people create a democratic government that will be responsible to world politics. It took 250 years for the U.S. to begin to understand Rule by Law (ethics) and democracy, lets pray that the Iraqi's have an advantage by seeing us and figuring out that it can work for them, too. In my opinion, the Chinese tend to work through other governments, like Iran, to cheat the world of democracy.  As the founding fathers noted, until the last tyrant is gone democracy is in danger. Also, hopefully, the Chinese will learn to govern themselves ethically and they will help lead the world into a better future.
You expect to reap what you sow - vietnam, iraq and if we are not careful, iran. China shot down one of its own satellites as a warning to others not to interfere with its launching of Chang-e, like, to make it appear like an accident. It was an insurance policy with China paying its own premium.
It is reported that the U.S. is planning to shoot down an 'out-of-control' satellite sometime later this week. How different is this from the China incident last year January? Your comments will be appreciated.
