Dr. Hawking's date with weightlessness

Posted: Monday, January 08, 2007 3:00 AM by Alan Boyle

Famed quadriplegic physicist Stephen Hawking confirms that he's planning to take a zero-gravity flight this year - a weightless adventure that's likely to unfold aboard a specially outfitted Boeing 727 operated by Zero Gravity Corp. Hawking made the comment in a 65th-birthday interview published today in The Telegraph, a British newspaper. "This year I'm planning a zero-gravity flight and to go into space in 2009," he said.

So what does Zero Gravity have to say about that plan?

Stephen Hawking says
he's planning a zero-
gravity flight this year.

Zero Gravity's chief marketing officer, Noah McMahon, was coy about the arrangements last week, when I asked him about the status of the company's month-old invitation to Hawking. He said there have been extended discussions with the Cambridge theorist, and hinted that there would be more to say this week.

The plan would call for Hawking to board Zero Gravity's "G-Force One" with assistants who could take care of him during the flight. At an altitude of 30,000 feet, the plane would go through a series of roller-coaster parabolic maneuvers to produce about 30 seconds of weightlessness at a time.

Why would Hawking, who has lost the use of his legs and arms and must communicate through a blink-operated computer, go on such a flight? Well, for one thing, it can be a lot of fun - as I found out last fall. For another thing, such a flight would serve as preparation for a future flight aboard Virgin Galactic's suborbital space plane. In recent months, Hawking has said flying in space was his next goal, and Virgin Galactic has been working with him to make that dream a reality.

Hawking's zero-G trip would send a signal that you needn't give up on your weightless dreams just because you use a wheelchair. Over the past few months, Zero Gravity has been working with the Federal Aviation Administration on the procedures for flying people with disabilities.

It's not yet clear exactly when the flight would take place, but the schedule may become clearer this week. Hawking is due to travel to the United States in April for a lecture in Seattle, plus activities elsewhere. I'm guessing that would serve as the soonest opportunity for Hawking to go weightless. Stay tuned...

Best wishes to you Stephen. Happy birthday and good luck on your trips... Great clouds today. Bob
The last time this came up I suggested reading RAH's "Waldo and Friends".  I say it again.  Dr. Hawking should, as well.  I suspect he would enjoy it!

To Dr. Hawking:  Good on yer! Go for it!
If there is anyone that deserves to be up there it is Stephen Hawking. No fee should be charged in recognition of who is arguably the most intelligent person ever to grace this planet.
Dr. Stephen Hawking is such a remarkable man that I do not doubt he will do whatever he sets his mind to.
It strikes me that the only limitations for Dr. Hawking are those imposed upon him by others and their perceptions of his 'disability'. He is truly a remarkable man.
I applaud the man and wish him well. Never have I been so delighted in being totally ignorant as when I read his work. I hope these experiences illuminates another light bulb in this fantastic mind and he can again fluster me with more brilliant work.
I think it's wonderful that Dr. Hawking will be able to do this. The only concern that I have is the amount of G forces on Dr. Hawking's body may possible injure him. If that's been worked out, I say good for him!
good luck stephen, hope this journey of yours becomes " finite but unbounded". you deserve this.
I believe Dr. Hawking is the single most intelligent man on the planet. I believe everything should be done in order to make this happen. He is an inspiration to us all.
Who better to appreciate a flight in space than Dr. Hawking? I would think it would be an honor for NASA or any other group to work to accommodate this remarkable man. Why not explore ways to allow him time on the space station? The insights he could provide would be invaluable.
Happy birthday to a truly inspirational student of the world. With a space trip planned it's only fitting then, to prove our world isn't big enough for such a man.
Dr. Hawking, the very best of luck and Happy Birthday. Wish I could join you.
Hot diggity, yeah! He's gonna go! Oh, boy, I hope so.

And others will go until it becomes commonplace. And the day will come when some will go with no intention of coming back.  That will be quite a day.
Happy Birthday, Dr. Hawking! We "dreamers" of the work salute you! When you finally break the bonds of the Earth-bound, please bring back some star dust.
I wish Dr. Hawking every ounce of good luck and enjoyment if he is accepted for the zero-gravity flight. He is most deserving of this adventure. My main concern is that such a flight can induce nausea and vomiting, and aspiration could represent a serious risk for him. I suspect that he is more than willing to accept such a risk.
good try !!~~
personally I believe Einstein to be the most intelligent to Grace this planet of ours, but still good luck to you Dr. Hawking and Happy Birthday. you are most certainly more intelligent than me.
Happy Birthday and Best Wishes on Your Zero-Gravity Adventure! You're a blessing to our world.
I love Dr Hawking! He's top on my prayer list.

I hope that Dr. Hawking enjoys himself... his mind is clearly used to soaring all the time - why not the body too?

Strap on a parachute and Bob's yer Uncle!
Happy belated Birthday Dr. Hawking! Give our regards to the universe while you're up there.
To true dreamers, wings are better than arms and legs, if only for a few moments.
I had been hoping to read that one of the reasons for the flight was to test the therapeutic effects of weightlessness on quadraplegia. I haven't seen this mentioned, but maybe it will work that way anyway. Good luck to Stephen and to everyone involved.
The United Kingdom is proud of you and wish you well.
GOOD FOR YOU! WISH I COULD GO WITH YOU, AND WE COULD TAKE ARTHUR C. CLARKE TOO.
Kool!
Thank you Dr.Hawking, your spirit and your bravery are only true inspiration in today's world.
Zero gravity (!)...it’s a miracle!
I am thrilled that this may become a reality. Gives a whole new meaning to Birthday candles doesn't it :) Enjoy yourself Sir - you certainly deserve this!
Spectacular!! I have always wanted to go into space, too. Imagine that...Dr. Hawking and I think alike! Happiest of birthdays, good luck and best wishes.

You're talking 'bout Hawking
who'll be floating in space.
What a marketing triumph their firm to embrace!
(Forgive me the ungrammatical case.)

But what is you find so newsworthy here?
A paralyzed genius in orbital sphere?
A hovering Englishman in vacuity clear?
Th' appeal does not genuinely seem to adhere.

If celebrity, marketing be your point
My interest from it is sadly disjoint
Or will science be performed, too
in the black beyond the blue?

Dr:stephen hawking God Bless you . you are great person.
If Isaac Newton was truly inspired by the fall of an Apple, one wonders what insights Stephen Hawking might get from experiencing weightlessness...

With Hawking the question
Which I feel I should mention
Is whether or not his mind
Be always scientifically inclin'd?

The drift from the floor
Unlocks a mind's doors
And forces thereon
New comprehension

The thrill and wonderment,
So soon just time well spent,
Never leave one's body or soul
As one attains a fuller sense of whole

Ever I yearn
To microgravity return,
That the joy and exaltation
Be experienced again and anon

This flight may be the key-in
For new insights from Hawking
New views of our reality
From different neuronal activity

Dr. Hawking, great!!!

...to think that there are opportunities like these for you.Let's see if your views about God change in any ways. May God bless you.

you can sum dr steven hawkins up in a few short words a true pure genius and an inspiration to all mankind
Best wishes on your zero gravity flight. Have a great time while up there.
Waldo (Robert A. Heinlein) learned to dance up there. I hope you dance, Mr. Hawking. I hope you dance.
Few men alive today are as inspiring as Dr. Hawkings. If anyone deserves the opportunity to do this, it is Dr. Hawkings. I sincerely hope that he enjoys this experience and am axiously waiting to read his report.
God speed Dr Hawking
Dr. Hawking,
You and your genius were put on this earth to inspire and enlighten this human race.  You emit such positive energy...we all are blessed by it!
Love & Light,
Joan Baldwin-Branch
Dr.Hawking, I am a mother of two children. After reading your biography and your work, you are a great inspiration to me. Good luck on your next adventure and I am sure you are going to succeed in whatever you undertake.
Stephen Hawking is a true inspiration barreling through life's every obsticle. He is where he is today because of his fantastic mind, and I'm thrilled he gets the chance to experience zero g regardless of his ALS.
Ever since I have been aware of Mr. Hawkings, I have been in awe of his persistence and good humor. I wish you a wonderful birthday, with many more to come.
We know of the state of health of the Dr. Hawking Whose it carries through in the flight of the zero-gravity I believe that they are prepared with referring care special its state of fragil health E at the same time desire that comes to be to it a pleasant experience for a man who contributed in such a way for science
The World is a more wonderful place because of people like Steven Hawking! God Please Bless Him!
Dear Mr. Hawking.  It is now July 2, 2008.  I am wondering if you have actually taken your zero gravity flight that you had planned for 2007? If you have I hope you found it to be a thrilling experience.  Also, I am interested in knowing when you plan to go into space in 2009.  I would be very interested in knowing where I can write to receive articles on these two events.  Thank you very much>
Sincerely.
