Blue Origin rocket report

Posted: Saturday, December 02, 2006 7:25 PM by Alan Boyle

The secretive rocket company backed by Amazon.com billionaire Jeff Bezos, Blue Origin, was planning the second test launch at its sprawling West Texas facility sometime between Thursday and today, as reported earlier this week. Air traffic controllers told me that the test didn't go off Thursday or Friday, perhaps due to unacceptable weather - and today they said there were two ignitions, but no liftoff. Because it's Blue Origin's policy not to comment on their tests, we don't yet know whether this was a disappointing fizzle or simply part of the expected testing routine. But stay tuned: Perhaps more information will trickle out.

Listen!  The sounds of silence?  The question becomes, What did they ignite?  Some one fired?

I enjoyed the article about the resurrection of the Canadian Arrow.  Columbus, Ohio as a spaceport?  Anyone checked out the effects of an empty V-2 sized booster dropping in after launch?  Even empty, a hard hat just won't do it!  An aborted launch with a nearly full fuel load in downtown Columbus is just a mite worrying!  And Columbus and environs get to pay $20 million for the priviledge, too!  I thought this was to be private venture - not gov'ment subsidy.

Of course, we have the comforting history of Canadian Arrows of the past.  Thanks to politics, they got cancelled and scrapped during testing.  Trust me, I would prefer to have that AVRO team together again.  They did great work, if you don't hold the AVROCar against them!
