Your UFO sightings

Posted: Tuesday, June 27, 2006 8:30 PM by Alan Boyle

Are UFOs real? Well, it all depends on what you mean by unidentified flying objects. Obviously there are things that seem to fly in the sky that we can't quite make out - but are they Frisbee disks or flying saucers, neurological glitches or interdimensional visitors? Last week we ran an update on the state of "scientific" ufology, and received scores of sighting reports in response. Read on for details on some of the mysterious questions and not-so-mysterious answers.

Ed: "UFOs are real. I still remember the one over Hempstead, Long Island, on a Friday in 1966 that I thought was a helicopter when I first saw it in the night sky. But it moved left and right too quickly, so I figured it was another Grumman's, Republic's or Fairchild-Hiller's test flight. Saturday morning it was a saucer photograph on the front page of the Long Island Press. Sunday the front page printed a retraction, along with a statement by the Air Force (fast, aren't they?).

"Why would a press photographer snap a clear shot (large, close and not fuzzy) and then deny it? It was a UFO, but just that, Unidentified (but it looked just like a flying saucer). I have also seen 'swamp gas' in northern New Jersey that looked like a ball of fire with a tail about 5 times longer than the ball's diameter, but there was no swamp nearby, just farms. And I read in the local N.J. papers about the Passaic cops chasing one along the river in the '70s when I lived there. Are they spacecraft? The cops didn't know either. Your guess is as good as mine."

Curt: "I was a 12-year-old amateur astronomer during the spring of 1958.  The previous Christmas I had been given my first telescope, a nifty 3-inch reflector.  I awoke one warm midnight and went to kitchen to get a glass of milk.  I took a look out the kitchen screen door to peer at the southern sky and was stunned to see a bright white point of light, brighter than any star, halfway up from the horizon.  I knew it could not be Venus, which is never out at midnight.  I ran to my closet and retrieved my telescope. I speedily set it up in the yard. As I brought the UFO into focus my heart started racing. There in the field of view appeared a huge elliptically shaped mother ship, surrounded by four small scout vessels!  Sweat quickly began dripping from my brow. My great excitement lasted for about a dozen seconds.  Then it mellowed into the gentler emotion of joy upon realization that I had 'discovered' Jupiter and its four large satellites.

"Go outside this evening and look toward the southern sky.  You’ll see the same thing.  It’s awesome. Acceptance and understanding of nature’s marvels can enrich us far more than insistence that fanciful conjectures by default must be the true explanations."

Al Berry: "I am e-mailing to tell you a simple thing that I saw in 1953. I was 13 years old then, and I was picking apples off a tree in Lynn, MA. My younger brother, who was 9 at the time, was with me. I happened to look across the street up over a large oak tree and saw what looked like a full moon. Same size and shape, but appeared unusually close. While I was staring at it, I said to my brother, 'Look at that moon.' Before he had a chance, it went what looked like straight backward into a point of light and was gone. No flashing lights, no sound or any of that junk. Just plain gone, I can see it in my mind just like it was an hour ago. Clear night, no wind, no explanation. I have told a few friends about it but never anyone else, and I know what I saw. Have you had any other people see anything similar? Let me know."

Jeff Powell: "I don’t know what they are, but I have seen a saucer-shaped UFO myself, in March '05. I was skeptical until then, but now there is no doubt in my mind that they exist. What made it even more interesting is that it left after being encountered by a very high-speed jet. The sighting was over Afton Mountain in Virginia on my way home from work about 5:30 p.m. The sunset was glistening off the bottom of the saucer like it reflects off water."

James Carbary: "I do believe that UFOs are real, and I have two reasons for this belief.

"1) I have seen natural phenomena that could be mistaken for a UFO, including Venus, swamp gas, an asteroid that passed through the earth's atmosphere, and traveled back out into space ... and two actual bona fide UFOs during broad daylight in great viewing conditions, with multiple witnesses, without actually having searched intentionally for a UFO.

"2) The statistical probability that there would be so many UFO sightings, throughout history I might add, without there actually being any UFOs in existence, is very minute to say the least. Some of the sightings have to be real occurrences of actual objects.

"The problem we face is that the U.S. government, and many governments worldwide over the years, have used the issue of UFOs to hide secret testing programs, perpetrated scams designed to confuse the public, and have used plausible deniability to cover their tracks. So we are faced with the problem of sorting the facts from the invented sightings (hoaxes perpetrated by unknown agents) which are seeded among the population to perpetuate and feed the hoax machine our government created.

"If we are truly going to solve the UFO riddle, we need a common standard, and scientific method, in order to be able to analyze the data and sort out the truths from the untruths. Why not a common worldwide standard for reporting the sightings that can be quantified and studied using a common set of rules, like the 802.11b wireless standard, created by a standards board? It would lend quite a bit of credibility to the subject and help separate the hype from the bunk, and give everyone something to agree on, a ruler to measure by, so to speak. Take it seriously, form a standards committee, come up with a set of rules and standards to use, and study the sightings in the serious light of day under scientific scrutiny.

"If that does not clear up the matter, at least we will be able to honestly say, 'We do not know what it is, so it is therefore an unknown object or natural phenomena.' This would be much more palatable than testosterone-pumped self-styled 'experts' further muddying the waters with their 'expert opinions.'

Jeff Capron: "Sure, UFO's are real.  Every day I see four or five UFO's. I am pretty sure that if I investigated, I would find out that they are aircraft landing at the local airport.

"I think the better question would be: Are E.T.s visiting the earth in crafts that we call 'UFOs' real?

"To this I would guess mostly no.  Sure, there may have been a few, but there is no way to tell.  I cannot begin to recount how many times I have had people swear to me that Venus / an airplane / a falling star / [insert normal skyward entity here] was a UFO while I am looking right at it and know exactly what it is.  This is just in my circle of friends.

"When I was a child, I wanted to believe in Santa Claus so much that I swore I saw him fly by the house and land on the roof.  Is this evidence that Santa Claus exists?  Of course not, but unfortunately, that same 'data' is accepted by 'ufologists' across the globe as proof of UFOs.

"Give me E.T.'s finger on a plate, show me clear video of a spaceship landing and probing sleeping victims, or wreckage from a drunk-driving alien, and then it would be possible to at least make a hypothesis."

Ray: "In the context of the description, of course there are UFOs (or Unidentified Flying Objects).  In the year 1980, my family and I were firsthand witnesses to something we just couldn’t identify. We had a large glowing oval object (about the size of our house) suddenly stop and hover about 75 yards from us over our back yard.  Nothing out of the ordinary happened as far as the encounter, just a lot of ooh’s and aaah’s from my brothers and sisters, and a little anxiety on the part of my mother, as that’s what mothers do.

"After a period of about five minutes, the object sped away toward the horizon at a terrific rate of speed and then up into the atmosphere. At the rate it was going, it should have broken the sound barrier, but it didn’t. (Even though I was in my teens, I had grown up with jets flying over the neighborhood in my childhood and was very familiar with sonic booms. They have laws against that now, I believe.)

"Now as to what this thing was, we never quite got the answer on that.  The town I was living in at the time was Sundance, Wyoming. (If someone happens to look up the incident, they should try checking the Sundance paper for 1979 and 1980.)  Most of the town saw the object, but a lot of people saw it on the move and just figured it was a meteor.

"Was it gas? Was it ball lightning? I really don’t know. I can’t imagine ball lightning being the size that it was, or gas traveling at those speeds. (Even the best bean burritos can’t generate gas power on that level!) Anyways, whatever we saw remains unidentified at the moment, so it definitely still fits the description of a UFO."

Ken Smith, Tennessee: "Yes, I believe they are real. I actually believe that I have seen some back in the 1950s. I am a retired electrical engineer and I really believe that what I saw as flying disks way up in the sky were UFOs. The disks were elliptical in shape and flying in circles at unbelievable speeds. We do not even have anything flying today that could rival the speed of the disks."

In addition to the sighting reports (or solution reports), some correspondents waxed philosophical. Here's a smattering of those big-picture observations:

Freddie: "As just one example, the Native Americans fell prey to man's conquering ways. If aliens do show up, I hope they are more understanding than we have been toward each other. I sometimes wonder if all this 'e-mail to space' is such a good idea. Nothing like waving a flag, and getting conquered for your effort."

Richard Youngs, Yuma, Ariz.: "Count the number of known objects in the heavens. Then ask yourself the question: 'Is there any possible way that we are alone?'"

Kenneth: "... If, and I do mean if, there is life along our lines out there, it would be so far away that to us it really does not exist. Or it could have come and gone. I would find it more believable that if we had or are being 'visited,' it would be us or those in the future going back in time, as if on a history field trip."

Harold M. Gott: "Is there life out there in space? Consider this idea. I live near Grand Mesa, Colorado.  On top of this mesa are several hundred lakes.  I've fished and caught fish in a few of those lakes. Some are rainbow trout, some are cutthroat, some are browns.  Am I to believe that the only lakes with fish in them, out of the several hundred on the mesa,  are the three or four lakes I've fished?  Are those three lakes the only ones in the USA - or the world - that have fish in them? Are those three species of fish the only kind in the world?  What a narrow-minded approach that would be. At some point in the maybe distant (maybe not so distant?) future, I'm certain intelligent life will be discovered out there (somewhere) and contact made with it.   I'm an old man now and will never live to see my prediction, but I feel certain some future generations will indeed see it happen."

I believe that within the next 20 years, possibly much less, we will discover evidence of life such as we're familiar with, on planets around other stars. The advances in astronomical technology and techniques should soon give us the ability to find adequately Earth-like planets, and to detect the spectrographic markers of the kinds of life we're familiar with.

I also believe that within that same time frame we will find phenomena on planets or moons in our solar system that we have to recognize as life, although doing so may require widening our definition of the term. Then again, these may be more familiar that we'd expect. After all, we've found extremeophile life forms on Earth living in conditions no less harsh than some of Jupiter's and Saturn's moons. Earth, Mars and the moon have all been "infected" by rocks from each other. It's likely the same has happened elsewhere. It's quite possible that life forms that we know can survive thousands of feet down in Earth rocks could survive being blown through space to another planet by an impact event. Someday the more important question may become "which planet did it start on?"
I do belive aliens and u.f.o's are real. One time at disney land,California I thought I saw a u.f.o or santa claus flying through the night sky on chrismas eve. It was like a glowing white thing and it was to big to be a star and because of all the bright lights and parades it would be also impossible to be a star!but i just thought it was wierd that a look a like santa claus on christmas eve, 2005,was flying above everyone to see was bezare.and who knows it could of been a u.f.o. who knows........
Well, considering the kind of descriptions you received from ordinary, intelligent people. I sure want to believe. Me? well, I have seen the odd flying thing that makes me wonder. But not as obvious as what those people reported. The only object I ever saw was a small, featurless white dot making a beeline from east to west once. It turned darker when it encountered clouds. I saw no features or lines that suggested a helicopter or plane.
I believe it was Stephen Hawking who suggested that we keep a low profile relative to UFO's and alien contact. If the smartest man on the planet thinks we might be tempting fate, I think I will listen.
> Richard Youngs, Yuma, Ariz.: "Count the number of known objects in the heavens. Then ask yourself the question: 'Is there any possible way that we are alone?'"

The question isn't whether we're alone, it's whether any of them find us significant enough to come visit.

I suspect the answer thus far is "no".
To all that do not believe of life on other planets:

Your brains are too small to understand anything beyond we live we die! If you cannot even tell me how we got here and where we are going, then how in the name of God can you tell me that we are alone in this vast universe?
If intelligent galaxy-faring life ever does hone in on all the noise we transmit into space, let's just hope they're not in the market for planetary real estate as we would be if we ever do master this star hopping thing.
I believe UFO's are very real. Once during an hunting trip I was sitting at a tree's base watching and listening to nature. In the light of mid-day Just above the trees coming closer was this wirling wind noise. As this came closer to me I looked at the tops of the trees as it passed over and I saw No disturbances of any leaves. This noise passed over me moving slowly and what seemed intentionally.   The hair on my neck stood up along with every goose bump possible on my body.  I could see no evidence that anything was passing over me sitting there in my camoflage. Now I know that I was not completely hidden because of many logical reasons. This was not the first time I had seem or felt some unexplained events.  Are they Real.  Yes in my mind without question. Can I prove it? Not to you.
Ridge,Long Island, NY   May 1966: My family and I were returning home about 9:30pm  when we noticed an unusual object about a mile in front of us. This object was oblong and approx. 300ft. in length and about 50ft. high and traveling in a circular path. It had large violet colored windows along its side and made no noise. We called the local police and two squad cars arrived within minutes. My father was a Army veteran and my mother was an experienced piolet, my brother was 16 and I was a senior in high school. Along with three police officers we watched this object for nearly an hour before it disappeared. The police officers radioed the town north of our location to see if there was some kind of lights  within their local. The responding officers stated that they couldn't see anything from their vantage point. The area over which this object was flying was a vast wooded area of over 8,000 acres with no other houses or buildings and only two dirt roads. The police officers made a diagram of the craft and a lengthly report in our presence and we all signed it as witnesses. Three years later when my brother became a police officer in the same district, he researched the report that was written that night and to his suprise the entire report was missing from a numbered file maintained by the police department. No explanation was ever given for the missing file.
We have over 400 government, military, and intelligence community witnesses testifying
to their direct, personal, first hand experience with UFOs, ETs, ET technology, and the cover-up that keeps this information secret.

This is a national press club event , that almost setles  the case  what are  the ufos, are they real or not,  it`s a must see.

I certainly believe that we’ll find microbes on many worlds and that other intelligent beings exist in our galaxy.  However, I definitely draw the line at UFOs.

You have to ask yourself “for what reason would such advanced beings be “hot-roding” around our suburban skies?”  Almost anything they would need to know can be learned from orbit or farther away still.  There is no need to be “showing off” as it were.  I also find all the talk about butchered cattle and human experiments hard to swallow.  A mere skin cell would be all they need as that would contain DNA, which they could then either read or clone from.

Since it is possible to detect earth-like planets from great distances, I would buy an argument that such advanced races have known about Earth for millions of years and that they may have even visited us.  Learning is a pre-requisite of intelligent life and I don’t think they could just ignore a world as beautiful as our own.  True, they may even still be here, but I would argue that their probes are as small as grains of sand and, therefore, impossible to detect.
I have been a UFO researcher and investigator since 1964. During this time, I have investigated hundreds of stories from credible witnesses who saw something that they could not explain. I spoke to many miltary and commercial pilots who confided their sightings and miltary missions dedicated to chasing these things. I have experienced seventy foot in diameter areas where the ground has been baked to a depth of two feet or seen ground glowing for four nights following alanding event.

Anyone who does even a little reading on the subject can find out that there is more to this than mere frisbees or trash cans being thrown up in the air.

The sheer volume of FOIA documents from the government and the nature of the content accurately depicts the seriousness of the matter, despite the fact that no credible and objective study has ever been afforded the subject from a public interest. The Condon report and now the Condign report in the UK that has surfaced in my humble opinion were merely attempts to end the study of sightings of UFOs and dispel the interest in UFOs from the public domain, while secretly, we all know that technology has advanced to the point that we can track them anywhere and a any time and no longer need anecdotal records of their presence. This money can be diverted for some other use, like that of incorporating UFO capabilities into our advanced weaponry.

The debate goes on and on and on about E.T.s, U.F.O.s and life forms other than our own.

In 1989 I was traveling trough Wyoming with the Grand Teton Mountains to my left.  It was during the Summer.
It was pitch black and clear.  It was 9:00 pm.  We were traveling in a 1976 Ford LTD Station Wagon with a 400 motor.

I happened to glance to my left and there on the horizon was a U.F.O.  There was no mistaking what it was.  It was oblong and three feet long and about 3-5 miles away.  It was traveling in the opposite direction we were.  It was moving very slowly.  It was about 18 inches tall and about two feet across the bottom.  There were lights of different colors.
Some were red, yellow, white and orange.

The drivers dauther was sitting in the back seat and did something very interesting.  She put her index fingers to her temples and closed her eyes.  The driver became terrified and mashed on the gas speeding us up to 90+ mph.  I wanted to stop and take some photos.

After the U.F.O. was gone the driver asked her daughter what she was doing.  The daughter responded by saying she communicated with the U.F.O.  The driver asked what their conversation was?  The daughter's response was: "They have come for me, but not right now."

The fact is millions of entities exist throughtout the cosmos.  This planet is under quarantine from cultures not of this planet.  The quarantine will be lifted within the next seven years.  There are lots of cultures waiting to pick up their members by 2012.

It is very possible every soul on this planet comes from somewhere in the universe.  It is very posible that U.F.O's will come to pick up those people who need to return home.

Science and religion are used to keep people ignorant about cultures that have come from elsewhere.  There are literally thousands of artifacts here on earth that proves there are other types of intelligence besides our own.

Jehovah of the Old Testament is a war lord god that came around 9,000 bc and took possession of the Jews as 'his' chosen people.  The Great Pyramid of Giza was created by the RA 11,000 years ago to teach people how to heal using love and how to manifest using light.

The good news is this.  Millions of cultures are waiting for the quarantine to be lifted to gather up those souls living humanly that belong to them.  By 2012 most of humanity will be with those cultures from space that they belong to.

Humanity has to resolve three psychologies: war, greed and slavery.  Each person living is responsible for doing so in his or her life.

The left front paw of the Spinx has a room under it.
Within that room are historical artifacts dating back 60,000 years and longer.  60,000 years ago English was spoken and there are documents that will be carbon dated to that time period.

Within the next seven years humanity will find it has been lied to by all the great institutions.

The Mayan Calendars are the legacy of a culture that came from the Plaidies and returned there by collectively ascending.

I have searched the skies and have seen some thing very strange that nobody wants to explain. I am a trained Army Observer and I can ID most normal things but there things out there that I cannot explain, and we on this earth do not have these type of craft. If these other people are real they have a purpose for not making contact, maybe they have an advanced knowledge of our doom and have been told hands off, just observe.
I have always believed in the possibility of life out there somewhere. I started looking into the UFO and missing time cases back in mid 2000, working at this full time. Since that time I have received just over 4,500 cases. I will admit, most of the sightings can be explained if a little time is placed into the reports. But there are many sighting reports that remain a complete mystery. For example, one case brought over 200 witnesses calling or emailing for an amazing event and two days following two woman had a incredible experience leaving then very ill and one woman having to be hospitalized over the night's event. (All happening in July 2003) This of course is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the unusual things people are witnessing in the day and night skies. What are these strange objects, I don't know. But I do believe strongly something very unusual is happening.

I also have spoke to many military service men and some women, police officers and pilots. Matter of fact many different police detachments call to have me investigate the sighting reports that they receive. Millions of folks are witnessing many weird objects, but the sad part to all this is, we only receive a fraction of what is being seen.
Oh Doug, dude...write your book, get on Coast to Coast and make a few bucks, ok? But get outa serious circles of inquiry. It's New Age psycho-babble like yours that is constantly making serious research impossible. What real scientist wants to get lumped in with guys that ramble on about the nature of Mans spirit, the Egyptians, 18 inch tall UFO's and make it a point to designate the engine in the Ford, as if THAT has any relevance...wow, out of meds again eh?
Am I a skeptic? Hardly. 1993, Orlando. South side, more toward highway 192 out to the Cape (Canaveral). The mechanical engineer and myself (the fibreglas tech) on a project  in Orlando are discussing the work in the parking lot when in the Eastern sky a red glow catches our attention. It is moving above clouds stratified at about 20 to 30,000 feet. we stop to observe this oddity. Suddenly, a torpedo shaped polished metal object with no wings, tail, or any thing drops through the clouds at a 45 degree angle moving very fast, levels off, slows, then leisurely cruises off to the north. We look at each other dumbstruck. Broad daylight, we estimate this would have happened out over a vast wilderness east of Kissimmee, and we were just facing the right direction. Two rational guys, in technical fields, not drunk or drugged. What was it? Your guess is as good as mine. But nobody had telepathic communications or secret coded mind melds or the secrets of the Great Neon God of Vegas revealed..we simply saw a UFO, clear and clean in the daytime sky. What it was or where it was from is anyone's guess.
I have always believed there are others out there and that we are not alone in this vast universe. Just a few months back I was looking at a house for sale, snapped a digital of the house and didn't think anything more about it until I got home. I loaded the picture into my computer and just above the house in the clear blue sky was this oval object. There was not a cloud in the sky and my digital had no spots on the lens, so I forwarded it to NASA and havn't heard anything, but then again, I really didn't they would respond.  Just another kook out there.
I didn't believe in them. The first time it was Dec. 67 from (Millinton ?)NAS outside of Memphis Tenn. that's when the newspapers said it was Georgia swamp gas the next morning. It was some distance away and darn no drugs available. The second time flying from Subic Bay Philippines to Futima Marine Air Station, Okinawa in the summer of 68. It appeared from nowhere on the right side of our KC130F on a clear night. The radar couldn't detect an object within 75 yards of the wingtip and LORAN informed us that what we were seeing as a cigar shape with lights was not really there.

Hallucinations is when one person sees an object only but, I don't know what is called when five individuals see the same thing. Then flies off at an extremely high speed (greater than mach 5) without afterburners. It hadn't been the first time for two crew members as it was for me to see it up close. We all noticed movement within that ship.

We were the guinea pigs in Haiphong Bay, North Vietnam playing cat and mouse with the MIG's but, that night you could cut fear with a knife on that cabin of our plane. It was strange, I was not allowed to flash signals with the flashlight towards those figures on whatever that was in that UFO.

The choice was to report it on the yellow sheet and spent most or all of our 96 explaining what we were seeing or forget what we were seeing and go on liberty when we landed. I really wished I was on acid, because I could then say I was really under the influence of drugs and those UFO's really don't exist.
Whether or not UFOs exist doesn't matter. If they do then they are too advanced to be controlled, studied against their will, or stopped.  What does matter is that we still don't know what happened in Roswell.  It's not that I think a UFO crashed there, just that the government was caught red handed in a lie, made up another lie and that was that.  If I were a general I would make up stories for fun too.  Why not; every one else is doing it.  There are no consequences, if anyone tries to investigate they'll be arrested as spies, held in Gitmo without trial.  I'll even make up a story about how they were working for an Iraqi Al-Qaeda cell, because I work for the government and even when people catch me in a lie there is nothing they can do.  I am invincible.  Ok, you got me, that was a lie.  The truth is I am indestuctible.
Folks, go into the internet and query "HAUNEBU" and HAUNEBU II.  Period.
lol, Just think, our constitution allows these nut bags a vote. It’s a terrible system, but for now it’s the best the world has to offer.
I'm surprised nobody has mentioned the Coke phenomenon.  Where on Earth (even in the Amazonas) can you go without encountering the detritus of modern technology, e.g. in the form of Coke cans?  Similarly, if we don't live in an utterly primitive backwater part of the galaxy, we should by rights have seen some "Coke cans" or other indicators.  From that premise, one may conclude that small robots, at least, are very likely to be around, so no reason to scoff at folks who maintain there have been UFOs of non-Earthly, technological origin.  The problem is that this almost logical inevitability is in the company of unsound ideas of Little Green Men with an unnatural interest in abducting bored, fortyish housewifes, creating art in cornfields, and employing Photograph Blurring technology to avoid any evidence of their crimes...
I find it interesting that the majority of the encounters listed started in the 1950-1960s.  Was this period not the beginning of the media's invention of "flying saucers" and tin-men from mars?  Let us assume that there have been life forms visiting us for approx. fifty years then.  Why are they always only visiting?  After so much time and so many "encounters," why have they not stopped to say HI!  (Oh yes, the government cover ups...)  More over, why do they always seem to be visiting only small desert towns in the USA more than any other place or country in the world?  Perhaps their penchant for trailer parks is insatiable.  The persistence of the saucer or oblong craft shape in most sightings is also ridiculous.  If such a shape is so well suited for space travel, why are we not using it?  (Oh, right, more government cover-ups...)  Let us assume (again) that we are being visited by beings from other planets...  According to most encounters, the craft sizes vary from a few feet (at a distance of 2-3 miles no less) to nearly the size of a football stadium.  They hover slowly in patterns so as to be well seen, or exist momentarily and then zip away as if suddenly discovered.  Thinking most logically, I would assume that after traveling millions of miles through space to our planet, the goal would be to probe our planet a bit further, not to initiate freak encounters outside of Long Island or grandma's farm.

If their existence is so prevelant and widespread, why has our current space program dragged on so poorly for decades and not incorporated all of this "secret technology" aquired from alien crash cover-ups?  While government denial would surely be the answer from most UFO-ers, I find it hard to believe that the government could sit on such information for long; they can't even contain the personal information of our vets and active duty soldiers.

I do believe that life exists beyond earth, but I doubt that it is visiting us in such a manner that we must rely only on suspected government cover-ups and shetchy eyewitness accounts for such proof.  Perhaps some day I will log on to MSNBC.com and find a headline touting the existence of other lifeforms, but until something other than 10 seconds of blurry home videos can be furnished to substantiate the claim, I doubt it.
I believe there are unidentified flying objects.  I have seen two, both in the daylight hours.
Once in the 70's some of my college friends and I were outside, along with other people in the neighborhood.  It was a pretty day to be outside.  We saw a very metallic silver-white glowing oval object in the sky.  There were four small bright lights surrounding it.  These small lights, green and red, would dart out from the large oval object and hover for a few seconds and then return to their position by the larger object.  They took turns doing this.  We stared and just knew it had to be some kind of satellite, perhaps gathering weather information, but we still stared in amazement for several minutes.  We had never seen anything like this before.  What changed our minds was when all the small bright lights repositioned themselves beside the large oval object and the whole UFO sped upward like a bullet - we had never seen anything go that fast and I've never seen anything else go that fast since then.
The next one I saw was when my daughter and I were driving home about 5:30 or so about six years ago.  I saw something strange in the sky and my daughter saw it, too.  It was very bright and glowing, like fire.  At first I thought it must be someone hang-gliding, but I knew it wasn't.  It was shaped like a crescent and paralleled the road we travelled.  Once in a while it would dip down, but it would come back up in a fraction of a second.  It paralled the road for about twelve minutes.  I kept trying to figure out an explanation for it, but there were woods by our road, not another road, so it couldn't have been pulled by a vehicle on a road.  We also saw no one underneath it, as you would have seen if someone were hang-gliding.  As we approached the top of a hill it disappeared, but then it reappeared in front of us, but the crescent was facing the opposite direction as before.  It had looked like it was liquid when it reappeared, like it poured itself into its shape.  The road curved, and then the object moved back parallel to the road.  It went down and came up, but then it went down again.  We didn't see it reappear again.  My daughter and I both saw this.
I don't know if these objects were remote controlled or if people were in them, but I do know what we saw.  And someone was responsible for them.  Who they are and where they come from, I do not know. But I do know they are real.
MY BROTHER AND I WERE OUT TRACKING DEER IN 1980 HUNTING SEASON. WE LEFT HOME ABOUT 4 IN THE AM. ABOUT EIGHT MILE FROM HOME DOWN A DIRT ROAD WE SAW A BRIGTHT LIGHT JUST ABOVE THE TREE LINE. WE KEPT RIDING TOWARD THE LIGHT AND THE CLOSER WE GOT THE LARGER IT BECAME JUST HOOVERING THERE. WE DROVE A MATTER OF YARDS OF IT GETTING A LITTLE SCARED THE WHOLE TIME  AND I STOPPED MY TRUCK JUST TO LOOK AT IT.THEN MY BROTHER LET DOWN THE WINDOW TO SEE IF WE COULD HERE IT BUT IT MADE NO SOUND. SO THEN WE REALLY DID NOT KNOW WHAT WE WERE LOOKING AT SO WE DECIDED TO GET OUT  OF THERE. THAT WHEN IT FOLLOWED US  AND CUT IN FRONT FOR MILES OUT OF THE WOODS.NEEDLESS TO SAY WE DID NOT HUNT THAT DAY AND MY LITTLE BROTHER WON'T TALK ABOUT IT TO THIS DAY
We seem to believe that we are the only life forms in the universe. just look at how many different life forms that we have on are planet. We are a very arrogant life form, we seem to believe that the universe is all about us. It was not that long ago in the history of man that we believed that our earth was the center of our solar system and the sun rotated around us. If what we have learned so far that we live in infinite universe then it possible that many other life forms exist, If they have paid us a visit no one can say for now. One question we should ask is if advanced life forms do exist would they would have  advanced technology and if they have advanced technology would want to pay us a visit. After just watching us they may believe that we are primitive life form. And not worth their time. Now  after reading this many people will feel insulted by this. All I can say is just look around. If we are to survive we have to think outside of the box and be open to new ideas. I believe that the humans can make it, we just have to try harder. For we must remember that the future is traveling at us faster then the speed of light. And the universe will go on with or without us.
I believe UFOs are real. I saw one in the late sixties in my hometown (not the one I live in now. I was walking to the school bus stop with another girl when it hovered right over us. I can still remember the blinking lights and the color of the metal. It was only for a few seconds then was gone in an instant. I have always believed there is a cover up behind them and that our government doesn't want us to know the truth.
Hi Alan,
My UFO encounter was at work with several other people - we were all outside talking during a break. I was meteor spotting, as I do when out of doors at night, and talking about fireballs etc. All of a sudden a brilliant light flew overhead, horizon to horizon, leaving no trail, no streak, totally unlike any meteor or fireball. It seemed so close that we involuntarily ducked, not lighting up the sky around it like high altitude burning space-junk or bolides. That, I believe, was the only UFO I've never been able to explain on later reflection. Other things I've seen have been atmosphere-skipping meteoroids, satellites hitting Earth's shadow, crossing paths etc. And one time I was fooled by a flock of white ibis flying at night, dimly reflecting street-lights. But that brilliant, fast-moving 'object' seemed totally different. My Aunt's husband also told me of a classic disk UFO he saw on night-watch years ago, but I've never been privileged to see such myself.
To this day I still find it amazing the gullibility of human beings.  Make all the excuses and reasons you want but if there were UFO's and aliens from other planets, they would have introduced themselves to the entire world.  You can make all the illogical statements you wish saying why they wouldn't have but once again you would be deceiving yourself. Wake up and get involved in the real world.  We have enough stange and mostly harmful things happening right here on planet earth.  Invest your time solving them and making this a better place to live.  At least this way your lives will not be wasted chasing yours and others imaginations.
I don't think UFO's are real. Most likely they are mis-interpretations of natural phenomena by inexpereienced observers. Just because a person is a policeman, lawyer or some other high upstanding person in society does not make him/her an experienced observer, so such people are going to be just as inexperienced at interpreting celestial phenomena as anyone else. I have been an active amateur astronomer for forty years, yet I have never seen anything that I could not explain as some kind of natural phenomenon. Considering how much time I spend observing the sky, then the chances that I should see a UFO would be high. The fact that I have never seen one suggests to myself that they don't exist.
My husband and I saw something unidentified about two years ago. We were driving and stopped at a stop sign to look for any oncoming cars. We had to look toward the sun and there, in front of and slightly below the sun, was an object glowing brightly. It did not appear to be moving, unless it was coming straight towards us, but it did not get bigger and there was no contrail such as jets leave in the sky. It appeared to be oval shaped. The object must have been shining so brightly because of its own lights because it was in front of the sun, so it's front side could not have been reflecting the sun. We watched it for a minute or two and I halfway laughingly said, "Hmmmmm....UFO?" My husband, Mr. Skeptic, said, "I guess so!" A moment later the object took off, straight up, and disappeared. I know that, rationally, we cannot be the only "life" in the universe, it is just too massive for this one little planet to have the only lifeforms of this type on it. All one needs to do is go on the Hubble Telescope website and look at how many stars, planets, suns, etc. can be seen in a tiny portion of space to realize just how massive the universe is.
“The Convoluted Universe (book)” I believe we are all here on Earth to learn and experience different forms of life.  This is just a stepping stone in our development to ascend to a higher level of existence.    I have not personally experience a UFO sighting but sure look forward to the day when it will become reality.  I also believe that the Governments of the world are in fact aware of these visitors and have in fact been given and or found technologies not currently known to exist.  I believe as technology continues to develop there will come a time when this information will need to be shared with the public.  An interesting concept of there possibly being different dimensions (a 5th dimension) existing is mind boggling but scientist are in fact trying to quantify this in a recent article on MSN News.  Why are they now trying to quantify this, what findings have led them in this direction?  What other experiments are occurring that we have no comprehension about.  Why is there a weather manipulation complex in Alaska built by the US government, heating the upper atmosphere?  Why would we want to change our weather patterns?  And is it not amazing that we recently found another lost civilization in Bosnian, if untouched by modern civilization what treasures to our past may be found.  Well maybe the puzzle will come together soon, all I can say is civilization is at the brink of great discovery and or coming to an end as we know it today.
It is my firm belief that UFO's do exist because of the great extent that world governments go to conceal this phenomenon. The stories of printed retractions, intimidation, the "black helicopter" units, as well as declassified government documents, lend credibilty to the possibility of a cover up. There have been "official" operations such as Blue Book and Sign that may have given our government extensive knowledge of not only flying objects, but of extraterrestrial technology and possibly alien civilizations in other regions of space.
RE: Kenneth's posting, I am in total agreement that if and only if, the UFO's are real it might actually be us in the future coming to the now to save the future possibly.   With that said I have seen some things before too.   Growing up near the runway or flight path of IAH(Houston Intercontinental Airport)I really think everything or most could be a plane or helicopter.
The question of whether UFOs are real is unrelated to the question of whether there may be extraterrestrial intelligent species.  UFO reports are not consistent enough, when compared with each other, to support the conclusion that each UFO reporter is describing the same spacecraft, the same type of spacecraft, or different spacecraft based on the same technology.  Thus, crediting UFO reports as descriptions of extraterrestrial spacecraft requires one to believe, not only that extraterrestrial spacecraft are visiting the earth, but that these visits are from a broad range of extraterrestrial spacecraft of different sizes and based on different technologies.  This is unlikely, and the alternative explanations are easier to believe.  As for the question of whether there are intelligent extraterrestial species that have not visited the earth and are unrelated to UFOs, this is a complete unknown.
On the second night of a vacation to South Florida in 1991, I was lying on a beach recliner at the edge of the Atlantic just listening to the ocean and looking at the stars. Suddenly, from the northeast, 10 disc-shaped objects in a triangle formation raced in from across the ocean at an incredible speed and suddenly stopped above the coast. I mean suddenly. I stared at the 10 blue colored discs (camoflage for flying over water?) for about 15 seconds, having time to note the color, number of objects and still be in awe, until they suddenly flew toward the southeast, the second point of the triangle formation taking the lead. They moved slow enough for the eye to track for all of one second before flying much faster than any technology we've developed as a race.
I was excited, awed and afraid to say anything to anyone out of fear of disbelief and losing credibility, but the next morning the Miami Herald reported over 2000 sightings of the same formation in various areas of the state of Florida.
UFO's real? Oh, you betcha. Why isn't there more definitive proof? Is it a government 'conspiracy'? Perhaps it is, but consider this...
We are a race of beings that kills each other over oil. We allow governments to be run by religious dogma and fight and kill in the name of religion. We pollute our earth on a daily basis, even in the face of the threat of global warming and concrete proof of it's actuality. We still discriminate against others of race because they're different, whether by color, creed, religion, etc. We have a nuclear deterrent that still threatens the survival of the species...
if you were from another world visiting ours, would YOU land?

I am not one to believe in UFO's, but one night last year, I was standing on my driveway and just above the roof line came what looked like a ball of fire with a long tail streaming behind it. It just shot down the middle of the street.  I ran down the driveway to the street, because I wanted to see what it was and it was gone, like nothing was ever there. Like I said, I never really believed in UFOs, but I still can't get it out of my mind of what it could have been?
In 1964 I was living in Fort Ord, California and one Saturday evening I was sitting in my back yard waiting for it to get late enough to watch the sun to set as I usually did.  This particular evening I noticed a large bright ball of white light traveling at a 45 degree angle and at an incredible rate of speed from the sky toward the horizon where the sky and the water met.  Just as the ball of light came near the horizon it came to an immediate dead stop.  There was no sound at all.  After a few seconds the white ball of light split into two spheres one of blue light and one of red, they each glowed and just hovered for maybe a minute if that long.  Suddenly they converged back into a ball of brilliant white light, hovered for a few more seconds and suddenly dropped into the ocean with absolutly no splash and disappeared.  Prior to this happening, I had not been looking at the sun so it wasn't my eyes playing a trick on me; in addition, the entire time this was happening my dog was whinning and tilting his his head from side to side while watching the same thing I was.  UFO, how knows, all I know is I saw something.  I have two friends (brothers) who 5 years later has something similar happen to them on the coast of Maine.  The only difference was their ball of light after separating and coming back together didn't drop into the Atlantic Ocean it flew over head at tree top level and disappeared into a wooded area.  They tried to find it but after going deep into the woods as they neared the area where the object disappeared they notice there was no sound not even from the dry leaves they were walking on.  They said is was like walking in to dead space, they said their skin felt like there was electricity all around them.  The got so frightened they turned around and ran home.

This video will make a...something out of you.
Everyday people can say they saw a ufo as its definition is unidentified flying object so yes ufo's are real. But I believe there are intelligent beings well beyond our current technology considering the age and vastness of our universe. I also believe many governments are witholding public information due to a fear factor of panic. I hope in my lifetime I witness a ufo phenomenon and maybe even get a clear photograph.
any follow up to this?

I have experienced three ufo type sightings. One, July 4th, 2001, I was outside our home watching our children light fireworks. Our neighbors had the large type, while looking into the sky, watching the fireworks, northward, I saw a light, looked like a star but it was moving too fast. It was not a plane, too far in the heavens. It made quick 45 degree angle turns to go around a star. It continued on and disappeared. My daughter saw it with me. Two others happened on the same night. In Richmond, Mihicgan about 2:30 A.M. August 2003. I was driving to my home. I turned onto a country road, and behind me a light came through my car. It was blue, at first I thought it was a light from a farm nearby, but as it passed, there were two blue streaks, and disappeared in a flash. When I turned into the subdivision, and pulled by car into the driveway, I heard an engine humming, not loud. It was not a jet engine. I walked into my house, and the noise continued. I entered my back patio area and saw an object I had never scene before. I looked somewhat like a the front end of a speed boat used in the Detroit River Races. It looked like two large lobster claws, with a center area connecting the two "claws", no lights, the reflection from my back door light illuminated the underside of the object. The color was of silver metal, with a burnished or scraped brass showing through. It had large rivets. It hovered over my house, less than 40 ft above, for about a minute. It disappeared in a few minutes. I lived near an air national guard base, and I have never seen any aircraft like this.
I was on Black Mountain in North Carolina camping out with a group in the summer of 1962 (I was 15). I decided to sleep in my sleeping bag and climbed in at about 10:30 pm. I was lying flat on my back, looking at the stars, noting how much nearer they seem on mountains, when a small cloud started drifting across the sky. Since it was alone (not a usual phenomena with cloud movement), and the rest of the sky was clear, I started focusing on it. About 5 or 10 minutes later I saw four lights fly into it at precisely 45-degree angles from each other at what must have been tremendous speed. I kept watching the cloud, waiting for them to fly out, but they didn't. In 1962, we didn't have anything that could do that--we were still trying to get rockets off the launching pad without crashing. At any rate, my attitude toward our school studies assumed a more discriminating orientation--were we really being taught the truth about earth history?
Another message to people who don't believe in intelligent life existing elsewhere in the universe:

You don't understand really large numbers. It's, OK, most people can't wrap their brains around a number with 22 zeros. But the fact is there are more stars in the universe than there are grains of sand on earth. In fact, most estimates are that for each grain of sand on earth there are at least one hundred stars.

The average person cannot really fathom the concept of a trillion. A number with 12 zeros. How about a number with 22? If you think we are the only intelligent civilization in the universe, you just don't know anything about probability and huge numbers.
WE had a UFO in Highland, IL some five years ago. I went and spoke with the man who saw it. The police here in Highland, Lebanon, and Shiloh saw it too. The TV people made a show out of it a mis represented what the man who saw it said. I wonder if beings from other worlds come here to visit. If so and the governement knows they probably don't want to tell us as they may not want to scare us.
I do  know the night the UFO came I woke up at the time it was alledgedly seen which is unusual as I always sleep the night unless having to go to the bathroom. If space travelers  do come, why do they not let themselves be officially known?
I have seen alot of unexplained things in my lifetime to make me believe we are not alone. And not just the fact that there are millions of galaxy's out there with millions of planets and to think we are alone is arrogant to say the least. It happened on a Fourth of July probably Ten years ago. Me and a bunch of friends were waiting for the Fire Works show to begin and I had laid back on our blanket to enjoy the beautiful night sky. It was crystal clear. from the left corner of the sky a light appeared. At first I thought it was a plane but moving way to fast. Shooting Star? No. Then all of a sudden as it moved form one end of the horizon to the other it stopped on a dime and turned left and was out into space. I have never seen anything move as fast and stop and turn on a 90 degree angle like that. What it was? I can't say for sure. But it wasn't man made.
I had a wonderful conversation with a retired commercial pilot recently. While we discussed a number of subjects related to aircraft, I saved an
interesting question for him as we approached our destination. "Had he had any encounter(s) with UFO's during his flying career?" Yes. Was the answer. Large, mutiple color lights; at a location where no air traffic was to be etc. The time, date, and exact location could not be disclosed as this info. was classified. A final comment was that he believed in other forms of life in the universe. Why not?

The governments of the world need to stop the coverup. It's time for the world to know the truth. They lie. The government lies. The military lies. NASA lies.
this new "UFO don't exist" report issued by the UK recently after "years of study" is another bogus coverup. INTERESTINGLY enough to come out only a couple of weeks after Gary McKinnon (UK UFO Hacker) made the news. They don't want it getting out. but why?

I know without any doubt that I have seen one.  I was in high school and cannot remember whether it was 65 or 66, in a small town, Pineville, Kentucky.  I was in the marching band, which was small, 45 kids or so, it was between 2:15 pm and 3:15 pm (last period) and we were having band practice on the football field.  Suddenly there was a large dark shadow over the whole band, everyone stopped marching and looked up.  No one said a word.  Hovering above us was a UFO.  It was a large, round, saucer shaped thing with a dome on top.  Encircling the dome were oscillating red and green lights.  It just hung there, shifting its attitude, dipping a little right, then a little left, for what seemed to be eons.  It was completely silent.  Then, in an instant, it flew up and away, and dipped behind a mountain that was about a mile from where we were.  The band director called the air force, and we all filled out paperwork describing what we had seen. A guy from Project Bluebook came to school one day, and told us to disregard what we had seen, that it appeared to have been a weather balloon.  Even at 14 or 15 years old, I knew it was no weather ballon.  Its shadow darkened most of a football field.  It was moving in a very controlled way, not drifting or floating.  Band director was very agitated.  After that, every time someone mentioned it he became angry and said not to talk about it, that it was a weather balloon.  I am now 54 years old, and can remember the whole incident quite vividly.
